2005 Santa Cruz OM, Brazilian/European
William Coulter’s personal Santa Cruz! This road-wise, opened up, and otherwise bombshell 2005 SCGC OM has seen William through many years of gigs and recordings. Now it’s time to pass the torch, so to speak, and we’re here to make sure it goes to a good home.
Brazilian Rosewood and European Spruce, set up for DADGAD, and decked out with a RMC Acoustic Gold MIDI saddle pickup—if you can imagine it, this OM can do it. Having been played extensively by William, the Euro Spruce top has opened up handsomely, and the tone has a breathy, lively response that’s well balanced across the registers.
Wrapped up in a Hoffee flight case, features nickel Waverly tuners, and only weighs just over four pounds! This Santa Cruz is easy on the ears, and even easier on the hands with a 1 13/16” nut and a soft-V neck profile with shallow cheeks that’s been played so much the finish has a slinky velvety feel.
A gem from Celtic and Classical virtuoso William Coulter’s personal stable, this 2005 SCGC is exactly what you’re looking for, if that’s a resonant and responsive fingerstyle instrument.

Small but fierce, this Santa Cruz Firefly from 2009 is an excellent addition to anyone’s collection. In addition to having the smooth playability for which Santa Cruz guitars are famous, this little bottle rocket also has some pretty explosive projection and trebles with an extra toothy bite! Old Time tunes or Blues licks sound particularly impressive on the Firefly, and the Indian Rosewood back and sides, paired with a Red Cedar top, help flesh out the voice to include some rich overtones in the bass register.
Conveniently-sized for travel, this Santa Cruz nevertheless has a surprisingly loud voice, and manages to avoid the plunky pitfalls that most guitars of this size suffer from.

In flawless condition, and with an impeccable voice, this 1999 Santa Cruz Tony Rice Professional is a powerhouse you won’t want to pass up. With gorgeous straight-grained Cocobolo Rosewood for the back and sides, and German Spruce for the top, you’ll find the tone rich and expressive, and capable of ferocious projection.
The last owner kept this baby in pristine shape, too, so this is as close as a guitarist can hope to get to a new guitar from Santa Cruz. Moreover, this guitar features a soft-V neck and 1 11/16″ nut, for a slim left hand feel, and a leopard-like spotted pickguard and herringbone trim package for extra suave points. We put this guitar through the ringer with everything from Funk and Blues to Bossa Nova and Bluegrass–and the results were the same every time: rich, dynamic, expressive.

The Santa Cruz Guitar Company was one of the first of their kind to offer a guitar designed specifically with the fingerstylist in mind–their FS model–with builders Jeff Traugott, Michael Hornick and Steve Palazzo at the forefront of contemporary guitar design. These days, the FS is still going strong: we’ve got one from 2009 with Madagascar Rosewood and Port Orford Cedar that absolutely sings when fingertips touch strings. Built with a wide lower bout and tight waist for balanced tone and powerful projection, the FS responds well to both a delicate and an aggressive attack, and the rounded C profile of the neck is easy on the left hand.
Capable of handling lowered tunings without batting an eye, you won’t have to worry about poor intonation: it’s nothing but rich, lush tones in here. 14 frets and a Venetian Cutaway for ease of access, a 1 13/16″ nut for easy fingering of complex chords, and a almost untouched finish–this FS is more than ready for whatever fingerstyle arrangement you throw at it.

These days, parlor guitars are starting to experience the same degree of popularity they enjoyed in their heyday during the early 1900s, thanks to advancements in modern amplification technology and a folk and traditional music revival. Naturally, builders are also expanding their lineups to include smaller-bodied guitars for their rich tonality and comfortable playability. The Santa Cruz Guitar Company has been making parlor-size guitars for some time now, and this 2010 Style 1 Custom is an excellent example of their work. Featuring a seductively figured Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and Italian Spruce top, sparkling Abalone flowerpot inlay and MOP snowflakes, and Brazilian Rosewood bindings, you’d be hard-pressed to find another parlor in this price range that looks (and sounds) so beautiful. All that Brazilian lends this guitar a rich and dynamic range, and when paired with the Italian Spruce’s drive, creates a voice with big-bodied sustain. Santa Cruz has given this Style 1 a soft-V neck for vintage appeal and easy fretting, and the 12-fret design makes the strings expressive but not overly tight. Whether it’s for American Traditional fingerpicking or Open D Blues, this Style 1 is a powerful instrument that’s hard to put down.

This 2013 Firefly is bright and shining, with attractive curves, Indian Rosewood back and sides, and a sunburst finished Cedar top. A guitar which is small but fierce, the Firefly has a surprisingly lush voice, and almost as much projection as its larger-bodied brethren. Here we have a real sweet heart from the Santa Cruz Guitar Co. This is a 1988 Tony Rice model in Master grade East Indian Rosewood and Adirondack (Red) Spruce. There is one thing instantly recognizable about the Tony Rice model, the enlarged soundhole, it is a feature lifted directly from Tonys own unique Martin guitar. We find the large soundhole helps to even out the tonal palette from bass to trebles, the bass is more controlled and even, while the trebles gain more power and punch. Another nice feature on this guitar is the low profile “V” neck which makes playing scorching fast licks a breeze!

It is quite hard to make a parlor size guitar that really sings, we have to say that Santa Cruz hit the mark with this PJ model. When you first pick this little beauty up and strike the first chord you will breath taken by just how much voice and tone a little box like this can give. The parlor guitar was originally intended for small intimate settings like a parlor or sitting room, usually soft voiced and small bodied, they never really were intended to go beyond that purpose. This PJ however, could fill up a large room with sound! It has plenty of bark and growl, play some blues or sweet classical music on it, anything really, it will sound great.

Round shouldered dreadnoughts have a unique sound,” enthused Santa Cruz president Richard Hoover. “Their deep, rich, bass and sweet, strong treble really shine in chord-oriented styles like country, folk and blues.” The Vintage Jumbo captures this tone perfectly, and enhances it with characteristic Santa Cruz volume, balance and complexity. This VJ harkens back to the old Gibson J guitars and does it in spades. We love the tone and character and the look is stunning.

Richard Hoover began building guitars and carved-top mandolins in 1972. By 1976 his focus was on the modern steel string guitar. The task of becoming a master at all aspects of guitar making is a lifelong pursuit, and Richard has patiently refined his craftsmanship and knowledge as his company has grown. It was and is Richard’s intent to translate his skills and sensitivities as an individual builder to an exceptional team of craftspeople, each of whom could become an expert in their specialty. Richard’s style of allowing his craftspeople to interpret his vision has propelled Santa Cruz Guitar Company to the forefront of modern guitar making. Each Santa Cruz guitar receives an extraordinary amount of individual attention due to our “bench style” of building, which necessitates that each worker not only perform his own specialty, but also review the work of those who have completed stages before him. Over half of all the instruments that we build are custom orders, reflecting to a high degree the personality and unique playing needs of the buyer. Every guitar top is graduated and tuned by hand to attain maximum resonance and sustain, ensuring a high level of consistency of sound within each standard model line as well as the ability for custom voicing. The balance, tone, volume, and response of a Santa Cruz guitar are established before the guitar is strung. By limiting the number of instruments built, we can practice a style of lutherie born from a genuine love of the guitar, as opposed to a production line approach that might favor greater numbers at the expense of our attention to detail. We believe that our approach ensures that every Santa Cruz guitar is exceptional. Our intent is to create a uniquely sophisticated instrument that will inspire and challenge its owner throughout a lifetime.
