Incredible! A complete instrument in every note. Bryan Galloup is building some of the finest guitars we’ve ever seen, and he’s working alongside some of our favorite luthiers on the scene to boot. This 2019 G.2C is a powerhouse. Striking Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Italian Spruce top with Adirondack Spruce bracing, nitro finish and hide glue construction—Bryan applies the scientific method to his building, yielding consistently consistent guitars like his responsive G.2C. We love the definition between the registers, and the crisp presence of individual notes; they burst right out of the soundhole under even a delicate attack. The larger lower bout helps flesh out the bass response, and we had so much fun tuning this beauty down into D and even C territory to really bring out that bottom end growl. Waverly tuners keep the neck weight down, and Galloup installed a sharp-looking pinless bridge and added a contour to the heelblock to give the left hand even easier access to the upper frets via the Venetian Cutaway. Across the BRW back, you’ll find a contemporary design inlaid with right angles and razor-straight purflings. And it all comes wrapped up safe and sound in a custom fitted Hoffee flight case.

The folks at Preston Thompson Guitars outdo themselves every. single. time. We just receive this latest Shipwreck Brazilian 000, and already we’re head over heels for it. Gorgeous BRW paired with Adirondack Spruce and 41-style Abalone “Mystic” Snowflakes along the fretboard and PTG’s original Regency Torch headstock inlay. This 000-14SBA is suited up with a 24.9 scale for warmth and easy playability, and the neck itself is finished in satin that’s gossamer to the touch. Brazilian Rosewood bindings throughout, tortoise-style pickguard, and Waverly Relic tuners round out the image of elegance. The Adirondack top is braced according to Preston’s advanced X, pre-war scalloped pattern, and as a result there’s plenty of power and headroom when you lean in, and clarity and presence under a softer attack. From top to bottom, a stroke of perfect.

Livewire! We just took in a pair of Petros guitars that complement each other to a T: matching woods, but one comes in steel and the other in nylon. This here is the 2006 steel string FS Cutaway, in Pau Ferro Rosewood and Engelmann Spruce. The slightly wider neck is an absolute breeze to play, especially if you’re a fingerstylist who likes a roomy fretboard. 12 frets to the body, combined with a Venetian Cutaway, gives the tone added warmth and color in the mids without compromising the player’s access to those upper frets. An excellent candidate for altered tunings! We loved DADGAD and C# especially. And gorgeous Amboyna Burl appointments (and bridge!) to round out the package in elegance.

We just took in a pair of Petros guitars that complement each other to a T: matching woods, but one comes in steel and the other in nylon. This here is the nylon crossover twin with Pau Ferro (Bolivian Rosewood) back and sides and an Engelmann Spruce top. Love the tone of nylon strings, but prefer the playability and creature comforts of a steel string guitar? This Petros Crossover is perfect. Radiused fretboard, slim nut, Venetian CutawayAmboyna burl appointments to boot, and an Alaskan Yellow Cedar neck.

So sweet, so loud, so proud. We love this fantastic D-18 which comes to us all the way from Martin’s shop in 1964. Our repair staff went over the whole guitar and brought it into peak playing condition with a neck reset and refret, and brother does it sing. There’s the usual play wear, but all of the playability perks of a new guitar.

A Bill Wise masterpiece. 2009 Charis SJ in Amazon Rosewood and Cedar, 5-ply Mahogany neck, Wenge arm and rib bevels for added player comfort, 25.5” scale for crisp, powerful response—the list goes on. This is a fabulous fingerstyle instrument, and with the addition of a Florentine Cutaway and a soundport in the upper bout keeps you in tune with your tunes. Bill’s guitars are famously easy to play, a nod to Jim Olson’s builds with a slim neck carve and SJ body dimensions, and this 2009 SJ is no exception. Silky smooth and quick. Gotoh Delta tuners, Calton flight case, and custom diamond fretboard inlays round it all out.

Well, well, Wayne! We’ve snagged a 2017 Henderson OM that’s like new with gorgeous Honduran Rosewood back and sides and an Adirondack Spruce top. According to our sources, Wayne’s only built a small handful of Hondo guitars, so we’re extra delighted to have found one ourselves. The voice is big and bold, with powerful response and fat trebles. We love the energy, for both fingers and flatpicks. Waverly tuners and 28-style appointments, rounded out with a custom tortoise-style pickguard and a soft V neck.

This is one smooth ride. A 2006 Collings D2H BbA that’s in excellent condition, silky setup, sweet trebles paired with excellent clarity and note separation across the registers, flawless fit and finish—honestly, what more could you want? To boot, this D2H has gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, an Adirondack Spruce top, Waverly tuners, and a soft V neck that’s easy on the hands. We can’t stress enough how clean and crisp the voice is, how smoothly this Collings projects without boominess. It’s an incredible Dreadnought.

For a brief window in the 1930s and 1940s, Martin experimented with a line of archtop guitars to compete with Gibson’s dominance of the big band scene. Here is an early example from 1931, a model C-3, with Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and an Adirondack Spruce top. Martin arched the back not by carving, but by arching the braces, which is how they were able to pull off building these guitars from Brazilian Rosewood (they could get many more flat sets out of the same amount of material required to carve one back). This one has been in a number of hands over the years, and has the marks to prove it. The pickguard is missing, and three of the tuners have been replaced by what appear to be vintage correct tuners at the time. Our repair staff went over the guitar with a  fine-toothed comb and made sure that it was ship-shape and ready for action. The setup is easy, especially considering the age.

Custom built for one of our clients! This 00 from Bevan Frost of Big Hollow Guitars is a beauty, dressed up with Cocobolo back and sides and a Moonspruce top. Interested in commissioning a build of your own? Give us a shout! We love working with clients and builders for custom projects.

This Mattingly Classical is a well-preserved treasure from one of America’s cherished luthiers. Built all the way back in 1984, this Concert Classical is in superb condition today, with only a few marks in spite of its many years. It’s been in one person’s hands all this time, and now we’re looking for the next person to take on this beautiful, responsive, and eminently playable Mattingly. Straight-grained Indian Rosewood back and sides, German Spruce on top, and Robert carved the neck with a sweet and subtle curve that feels silky in the hand. 650mm scale, rope style bindings and mosaic rosette, and Robert’s hallmark scalloped nut completes the image. This 1984 Mattingly comes with its original hardshell case and case cover.

Bill Tippin is one of our desert island builders, and this 2009 Crescendo is one of our desert island guitars. Simply gorgeous woods: bookmatched Cocobolo with sapwood, Sinker Redwood on top set off with Maple purflings and rosette. The strings respond sweetly to even a delicate attack, and we can’t praise the tone enough, from the string-to-string balance to the dynamic response and colorful bass. Waverly tuners keep the neck weight low, and Bill’s contoured Venetian Cutaway allows for easy upper fret access—a register where this Crescendo excels, unlike so many other steel string guitars. Additionally, there’s a K&K Pure Mini pickup installed (one of our personal favorites), and the whole package comes wrapped up in a Cedar Creek tweed hardshell case.
This Tippin is a lifetime kind of guitar.

The relationship between John Mayer and Martin has yielded a number of incredible models—and we’ve just landed a single owner 2018 D-45 John Mayer Signature that’s proof. Based off of a D-45 Mayer found in Japan in the 70s, he and Martin worked together testing out various wood combinations, eventually settling on Guatemalan Rosewood and Engelmann Spruce. The top has a hybrid bracing system of Adirondack Spruce cross braces with Sitka Spruce tonebars, a combo they landed on after several different iterations. And this beauty is number 32 of an exclusive 45 ever built! The neck is Martin’s vintage-style Full Thickness profile, which feels chunky and full in-hand. With a 1 11/16” nut, though, the play feel is still comfortable and effortless; this D-45 John Mayer plays handsomely. Wrapping up the package, we have Abalone trim on top and along the heel and endgraft, plus 45-style Abalone hexagram position markers along the fretboard.

Lovely inlay, lovely story, lovely tone: we’ve stumbled across a powerhouse Taylor Cujo-10 that’s itching to be played. Built from the 400-year-old Black Walnut tree which appeared in Steven King’s American Horror classic, Cujo, this is number 51 of 125 such guitars built by Taylor, here in their Dreadnought shape with Sitka Spruce on top and Tortoloid bindings. Sprawling along the fretboard you’ll find hallmark motifs from King’s tale, from MOP bats to the eponymous dog at the neck joint. This 1997 Taylor Cujo-10 has been very well cared for, and is in superb condition. Add to that Taylor’s trademark crisp sound and easy playability, and you’ve got a special piece on your hands.

An incredible find. This 2012 Stephen Connor Classical comes from no less a master than Odair Assad of the Assad brothers. Indian Rosewood back and sides with a Maple backstrip, Moonspruce top, and Stephen’s elevated fingerboard and sound portal come together for an exquisitely powerful and dynamic tone. The headstock has been upgraded with Rodgers tuners, and Stephen’s lattice-braced Moonspruce top features gorgeous bearclaw figure to boot. This Connor has been lovingly played in the past few years, and has the well-earned marks to prove it. In our eyes, this only reinforces the value of the instrument: it’s been played in to open up handsomely, and with an easy setup under your hands. A true concert guitar.

In 2012, George Gruhn commissioned a run of special pieces from Martin’s Custom Shop, including a number of 00-21S models with Madagascar Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce. This particular example is in excellent condition, with hardly a mark on it, and has a warm and focused tone that feels right at home for fingerpicking. Flamed Koa bindings, T bar-reinforced Spanish Cedar neck, and George spec’d these out with slotted headstocks and Waverly tuners to boot. Hide glue construction throughout, 1 3/4” nut, 24.9” scale, and a snug fitting Martin TKL case.

At long last, the mac daddy Wilborn WarHorse has arrived. We commissioned this Mod D from Ben with all the stops on full blast: top shelf Brazilian Rosewood, Tunnel 14 Redwood, Koa arm bevel, soundport, multiscale fretboard (25.4-24.9”)—and sweet, sweet tone. The fit and finish is 100% perfect, and the “DreamHorse” plays oh so smoothly, in both standard tuning and funky altered territory (try C# on for size). The added sustain and bass of the Modified Dreadnought body gives the WarHorse a powerful response that leaps right out of the soundhole (and soundport).
This Wilborn WarHorse is sincerely inspirational. We cannot recommend it highly enough for virtually any style you play.

George Lowden’s S-35 series combines small body warmth with the added bass and projection of deeper than average sides. This particular S-35 comes to us from 2008, and it looks fabulous. Walnut back and sides, Cedar on top, with Sycamore bindings and Gotoh 510 tuners. This one features the GL Standard profile on a Mahogany-Walnut-Rosewood neck, and a short scale fretboard for easy playability. We’re happy to report that this Lowden S-35 strikes a nice balance for both fingerpicking and strumming.

Lowden’s F body fits the bill to a T for balance, sustain, and depth. These guitars are excellent fingerstyle instruments, and they have enough resonance and projection to handle flatpicking easily as well. Our 2006 F-35CX is a sharp dressed fellow in Myrtlewood and Redwood, with Lowden’s five-ply Maple neck and pinless bridge. Gold Gotoh tuners, original Hiscox case, and we’re happy to report this 13-year-old Lowden has a sweet and easy setup with lots of life left to the saddles, and is ready for many more years of music yet.
