2018 Beauregard Facettes Archtop 16,” Quilted Maple/Spruce
Mario Beauregard’s touch with chisel and plane, sandpaper and file, is unparalleled. This 2018 Facettes Archtop 16″ is an absolute feat of modern lutherie! Sumptuously figured Maple back and sides, Spruce top, gold Lollar pickup with volume and tone at the pickguard; upper bout soundport; effortless playability and response. This instrument is like inspiration in wood form. Mario engineers the top with these arcing facets that feature subtle soundholes integrated into their centers–we can’t imagine how he pulls this off so well–which you’ll also find across the carved Maple back for continuity. Note how the pickguard descends to a point above the bridge, its outside edge matching the curves of the facets. Setup is butter smooth and slinky, and this 2018 Beauregard comes wrapped up in a custom Hoffee case for maximum protection.

Really, this instrument will do whatever you could ask of it. For the player and collector alike, this instrument will do one thing exceptionally well: enhance your musical life. It’s not easy to make a new name for yourself in the archtop, electric world, but we think Tyler Wells of LHT Guitars has what it takes. This 2020 Rose Burl Fugue is nothing short of a work of functional art. Curvaceous yet comfortable, stands apart from the crowd yet at the same time approachable and familiar. This guitar feels effortless in hand, from the multiscale setup (24.7-25.7”) to the lightweight build and cutaway ergonomics. The neck and body are perfectly balanced to play off your leg when seated, and Tyler’s handsomely executed single bass offset soundhole broadcasts cleanly straight into the player’s ear. Acoustically, the Fugue has impressive presence and range, and would record very well on that level alone. When amplified with a Parallelogram Kent Armstrong humbucker (volume and tone under the Burl pickguard), the tone rolls out fat and round with fingers, and responds beautifully with added crispness and punch under a flatpick attack.
The body is Flame Maple, here paired with a carved Sitka Spruce top and a 4-piece Flame Maple neck with carbon fiber reinforcement. Black ABS bindings, and Bodega Bay driftwood burl appointments throughout give this Fugue its “Burl” designation (with a gorgeous, gorgeous red Nitro burst for the “Rose”).
The LHT Fugue is what successful modern lutherie looks like: pushing the envelope without forgetting its roots, exploring contemporary aesthetics with an eye for ease of play and an ear for dynamics.Other keywords: kent parker, arched top, jazz guitar, fan fret, fanned fret, 3007, ska, flamed maple, duane simpson

Understated elegance, and comfort; this guitar is a polyphonic playground. An Archtop sporting a soundport, that not only gives you “a little more of me in the monitor,” it also gives you a glimpse into the beautiful construction of this instrument. A classic combination of Maple and Spruce, with all the modern creature comforts. While this guitar may be built as an all-acoustic archtop, it is still quite electrifying. Comes safe and sound in a Hoffee Roadie flight case.

The result of masters from two fields in collaboration: luthiers Dale & Tyler Unger and hyperrealist painter Peter Maier. The Ram is a particular brand of unique—17 inch archtop whose Maple back is adorned with a hyper realistic ram from Maier. On top, a gold motif continues along the center seam and with the trapeze tailpiece and hardware, plus gold Gotoh mini tuners. The headstock boasts a tightly figured Koa headplate, and from there you’ll find a series of vibrant Abalone position markers along the fretboard. Here’s a snapshot of Maier’s process: https://youtu.be/5AN01qUDxbw. On the electronics front, Unger outfitted the Ram with a Kent Armstrong floating humbucker plus volume and tone at the pickguard (itself featuring a single band of gold that arcs diagonally across). Top is AAAA European Spruce, paired with AAAA European Maple for the back and sides. Flame Maple neck, set off with the Ebony fingerboard, completes the portrait. Here’s Maier: “The Ram guitar was inspired by my time at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, where skulls of animals were dominant in many business locations—however I worked gold leaf onto the horns with an engine turned finish to give it more of a costly & valued appearance.”

This guitar is an archtop with a warmer sound than the traditional design. The oval soundhole gives the guitar more sustain than the f-hole top. It has the projection and power of a great archtop, with the harmonic complexity and sustain more common to the flattop. This makes the guitar very versatile whether played with a flatpick or fingertips, fast or slow, loud or soft.

Number 200 is a milestone, indeed, so why not celebrate it? Enter: Victor Baker’s archtop #200. Pulling out all the stops in 2007, baker carved 25-year-old Sitka Spruce for the top, pairing with tightly flamed Maple for the back and sides, as well as neck and bindings. The number 200 is inlaid at the top and back, and the fretboard is stamped no.200 at the bottom corner of the extension. Floating Kent Armstrong humbucker with volume and tone knobs, Ebony tailpiece reinforced with brass, and gold Gotoh tuners at the headstock. This 16” archtop weighs in at a little over six pounds, and plays very smoothly with a quick and lively response. The Armstrong bucker is rich and fat for plugging in, but this one holds its own when played acoustically as well.

A work of functional art. We’ve loved Mario Beauregard’s guitars for so many years, and even so it feels like a new experience every time we have the pleasure of hosting one of his guitars in the shop. Here we’ve landed one of his coveted Facettes archtops, which by itself is incredible, but this 2015 Facettes has the added distinction of featuring a carved Brazilian Rosewood back. The result is truly remarkable. Not only has Mario painstakingly carved these curvaceous facettes into the top and back, he’s done so with a wood combination of European Spruce on top and BRW back and sides that you’re likely to hardly see ever again on an archtop guitar. Additional features include a custom Benedetti humbucker pickup, EVO frets, and a lightweight BAM case.

This guitar comes with an extra set of socks, since the pair you’re wearing at the first strum will be blown to smithereens. An archtop of this calibre, we see one but rarely: a 1995 Bob Benedetto Limelite. Lightly figured Maple back and neck, dyed-to-match Euro Spruce top, and a 25 inch scale per the original owner’s request. This Benedetto came out of Bob’s East Stroudsburg shop, straight from Bob’s hands to the current owner’s. As such, this is a single owner Benedetto that’s been well-cared for and plays like your grandma’s butter.
The Benedetto humbucker and integrated pickguard volume knob are simple and no-fuss, offering a thunderclap bass and great string-to-string response. The acoustic voice keeps the embers burning in the middle register and fans the flames out to bass and trebles: lively, energetic, with great projection.
How lucky are we to have such a beauty from Bob’s own hands? If you’re feeling lucky too, you can take this 1995 Benedetto Limelite home with you today.
