New Manzer Dehlicaster Indian/Spruce
We like to think that our shop contains some of the finest, strangest, and unique guitars on the planet. We’ve got seven-string nylons and 12-string baritones, Somogyi Mod Ds and Matsuda Deconstructions, fan-frets and adjustable necks and interchangeable saddles–but there’s nothing quite like the Linda Manzer Sitar Guitar. Linda’s work spans the length and breadth of what’s acoustically possible in guitar construction, so by comparison this “Dehlicaster” looks almost (almost) like an ordinary guitar with gorgeous Indian Rosewood and Spruce. Take one look at the bridge, however, and all bets are off.Linda’s sole source of information when she was building the first Sitar Guitar for Pat Metheny in the 1980’s was a brief two-page article titled “Djovari: Giving Life to the Sitar,” in which the respectable career of an Indian Sitar saddle carver is explained to Western audiences, perhaps for the first time. Linda scanned the article, and we’ve included it below. In modifying Djovari for the guitar, Manzer has implemented a system of Ebony shims to adjust the height of each string’s long saddle, allowing each string to be adjusted individually to optimize the amount of buzz and shimmer.Haunting and rhapsodic, with single-string leads inspiring sympathetic resonance from adjacent strings, the Dehlicaster is particularly moving. This is an instrument to completely change your perspective on what a guitar can look like, and what a guitar can do. With its esoteric and unmistakable sustain, the Dehlicaster is guaranteed to transport every fingerstyle arrangement or flatpicked solo into uncharted and exhilarating territory.

Linda Manzer needs little introduction to the guitar aficionado, but if you’ve never played one of her Baritone Guitars read on… Linda has a real knack for Baritone instruments, as evidenced by Pat Metheny’s use of one just like this one below on his ‘One Quiet Night’ CD. The purity and clarity of voice, that all her instruments share, really sets her long scale guitars apart. This stunning Koa and German Spruce Wedge body is small, by baritone standards, yet the voice is full and satisfying. The Koa offers great separation of notes played anywhere on the fingerboard. The playing dimensions are 1 3/4″ at the nut and 2 1/4″ at the saddle, again slightly smaller than some baritones, but combined with the body size and neck profile make this bari easy to hold and play. The 28.75″ scale easily handles low A tunings and can come up to B or C depending on string gauges. To sum it up, Linda knows Baritones…

Pat Metheny describes the Manzer model by Linda Manzer this way… “the best acoustic guitar I have ever played“. Players like Pat Metheny have their pick of any guitar on the planet, so that is high praise indeed. This Brazilian rosewood and German Spruce model has the detailed clarity that makes it easy to understand why the best players would enjoy a Manzer guitar. In fact this one is built to the same dimensions as the first guitar she made for Pat Metheny in the 1980s. This was the last one made just prior to the start of the Metheny guitars. This one is perfectly balance, thanks in part to it’s Wedge Body design, and extremely articulate. This guitar makes it easy for the player to express themselves, and that’s what it’s all about.

Stephen Marchione manages to make a 17 inch archtop play as easy as a much smaller guitar–without losing the projection and power and resonance of the big box. The 3″ sides help with this, as well as the silky setup and neck carve. Back and sides are cello-grade Curly Maple, and on top Stephen opted for a set of European Spruce that matches perfectly. Ebony hardware throughout, and the pickup has been more recently upgraded with a custom Marchione-DiMarzio PAF collaboration–and this humbucker sings!

If crisp, lively power is what you need, this Marchione is here to deliver. Stephen’s OMC model threads the needle between room-filling projection and intimate playability, which this beauty from 2019 does just that. Notes fire right out from the soundhole, with an evenness between the registers that’s excellent for both fingerstyle and flatpicking. On the tonewood, front, Stephen outfitted this OMC with gorgeous, gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood and Swiss Spruce (note the light bearclaw figure), Honduran Mahogany neck, and Figured Maple bindings. Hot hide glue construction throughout, plus stainless steel frets for longevity. Moreover, Marchione installed an example of his unique, five-piece piezo pickup system that he developed with Will Brahm—and this puppy sounds delightfully natural and organic when plugged in.
