Brand New Musser Parlor, Flamed Mahogany/Engelmann Spruce
This was a custom build for a client of ours. Don Musser always impresses us here at the shop, and this is no exception. The quintessential parlor guitar, dressed in flamed mahogany and Engelmann spruce. The punch of mahogany in a comfortable single 0 size, combined with the smoothness from the Engelmann spruce, makes this guitar a delight. It’s certainly comfortable on the couch, but also perfect for the studio or the stage. With smooth clarity and meticulous attention to detail, this guitar can be summed up in one word: smooth.

Brand New Musser SJ, Flamed Mahogany/Adirondack Spruce
This was a fun collaboration between Paul Heumiller and Don Musser. They opted for Adirondack Spruce over Figured Mahogany and a slope shoulder body, with some extra tweaking to the bracing for additional balance and responsiveness. Half satin neck feels excellent in hand, and as a subtle nod to Dream Guitars, Don inlaid “Dream” at the headstock in our brand font.

Brand New Musser SJ, The Tree Mahogany/Colorado Engelmann Spruce
A dream machine if ever we’ve seen. Our latest Musser build is a powerful SJ in the spirit of Gibson’s slope shoulder, but here with Don’s own aesthetic touches, and of course premium tonewoods. The back and sides are figured The Tree Mahogany, with a Colorado Engelmann Spruce top. Spanish Cedar neck plus Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard and bridge (ditto for the headstock veneer, bindings, and heelcap + end graft). The voice works for just about everything, from fingers to picks, and does so with a crisp and well defined and balanced response.

Brand New Musser J-200, Brazilian Rosewood/Engelmann Spruce
For this bespoke client commission, Don Musser pulls out all the stops. The second in a pair of Gram Parsons-inspired flattops, this Jumbo features extensive pearl work along the fingerboard and headstock with a nod to Parsons’ “Return Of The Grievous Angel,” Engelmann Spruce on top, and a chocolate-dark set of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides. The voice has great depth and dynamic range, suitable for both picks and fingertips–even played softly, this Musser Jumbo has a profoundly rich and articulate voice. Brand New Musser Dreadnought, Brazilian Rosewood/Engelmann Spruce
Always a joy to pair up our clients with some of our favorite builders. In this case, we worked with Don Musser in an homage to Gram Parsons’ David Russell Young dreadnought, right down to the extensive inlays along the fingerboard and headstock, bridge, and three-piece Brazilian Rosewood back. On top, Engelmann Spruce with a red burst, and Brazilian Rosewood body bindings plus Abalone trim for added dressings. The voice is very quick and lively, exceptionally energetic considering it’s only been making music for a short while!

Brand New Musser Dreadnought, The Tree Mahogany/Bearclaw Engelmann
Brand new and raring to go. Our latest Dreadnought from Don Musser is dressed to the nines with The Tree Mahogany, Engelmann Spruce, and Curly Maple bindings throughout. Mahogany neck, currently set up with light strings, feels very easy in hand. We found it adapted well to both flatpicking and fingers with that light setup to boot. Gold Gotoh tuners at the headstock set off the Pearl trim and Rosewood veneer, as well as the scalloped nut (matching up with a scalloped saddle at the Ebony bridge). Dalmation pickguard plus Paua Abalone rosette and trim—this Musser’s a looker as much as a singer.

Brand New Musser OM, Brazilian Rosewood/Engelmann Spruce
With OM number 358, Don gives us a gorgeous example of the dynamism and wide-ranging appeal of this body size. This brand new Musser is responsive to many different styles of play, has a clarity and precision in the trebles that pairs up nicely with a sweet, rich bottom end, and the fit and finish are flawless from tuner to tail. For this build, Don picked out a chocolatey set of Brazilain Rosewood for the back and sides, paired it with Colorado Engelmann Spruce on top, and bound it all up with some truly lovely Curly Bigleaf Maple bindings (extra bevelled for creature comfort). And caps it off with a dalmatian style pickguard and Abalone rosette plus MOP torch headstock.

2021 Musser OM, Cocobolo/Blue Spruce
Ah, we love gorgeous this 2021 OM from Don Musser. He picked out a stellar set of Cocobolo Rosewood for the body, and paired it with Colorado Blue Spruce on top and Curly Maple bindings—and it sounds as lovely as it looks. Nearly new from 2021 and the voice is already expansive and balanced across the registers.

Brand New Musser Dreadnought, The Tree Mahogany/Colorado Blue Spruce
Don Musser, well damn. This Dread is an articulate beast, a mix of crackling livewire energy and crisp note definition and smooth decay. Brand new to boot! Part of Don’s secret (aside from his invaluable voicing techniques) is his life as a tonewood dealer, giving him access to the best materials. Take the woods on this number: The Tree Mahogany back and sides, Colorado Blue Spruce top, Honduran Mahogany neck plus BRW headplate. And Curly Maple bindings to tie it all together (and a lovely sunburst on top to offset the Pearl trim and rosette). The setup is silk smooth and responsive to a light touch just as much as a heavier attack. It’s a powerhorse (that’s a powerhouse workhorse).

Brand New Musser Parlour, Brazilian Rosewood/Engelmann Spruce
Don Musser makes small guitars writ large: this Parlour rings out from wall to wall. Gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, bound in Flamed Koa, with Colorado Engelmann Spruce on top—and of course these woods are top notch, considering Don’s reputation in the tonewood world. In fact, this is a set of Braz from his pre-Cites “Stash Grade” stacks which was imported into the states in 1948. The Engelmann Spruce Don selected and processed himself, to boot.
The trebles have a lot of pop, and they pair up sweetly with the warm and present mids. The bass register comes in from the bottom to round it out. Brand New Musser OM, Cocobolo/Sitka Spruce
We’re excited to finally work with longtime luthier and tonewood guru, Don Musser, on an OM decked out in gorgeous woods and with a tone that cuts through the mix with a smooth, balanced response. Don pulled out some gorgeous Costa Rican Cocobolo for the back and sides (check out the brick-red hues), and used a set of fiercely tight-grained Sitka Spruce for the top, freshly revoiced for maximum resonance.
Bindings come in Curly Bigleaf Maple; the bridge and headstock veneer are Amazon Rosewood, Honduran Mahogany neck—the list goes on. We’d expect no less from a tonewood dealer of Don’s reputation. A high gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish helps bring out every detail of the woods; you can almost shave in its reflection. The headstock is inlaid with Don’s “A harvest Angel” motif.
The voice is characterized by a balanced response that’s consistent along the fretboard and between strings. We found this Musser OM was a great choice for fingerpicking in standard tuning, as well as Open D. When dug into, the guitar maintained an even response, but we also found that even delicately plucked notes had sustain consistent with an aggressive attack. Don has just revoiced the top for added resonance, and the voice has an even lusher, more spacious tone than before!

Brand New Musser Advanced Jumbo, The Tree Mahogany/Engelmann Spruce
So hot we couldn’t keep it long enough to list! This is our first Gibson-style slope shoulder dreadnought from Don Musser, and of course the tonewoods are top notch. The Tree Mahogany back and sides, Engelmann Spruce on top, and Ocelot Ear Brazilian Rosewood for the headstock veneer and bridge. Bigleaf Maple bindings tie it together, with a sunburst finish on top that really pops. Tonally, this Advanced Jumbo kicks with clarity and precision, an excellently clean and energetic voice. It holds up handsomely for fingerpicking and flatpicking both! Now, this beauty is already gone, gone, gone, but if you want to commission a Musser for yourself just give us a shout here!

Brand New Musser OM, The Tree Mahogany/Engelmann Spruce
This latest OM from Don Musser is something extraordinary. Explosively figured The Tree Mahogany back and sides, Engelmann Spruce top, with nitro finish throughout and pearl across the body and headstock with surprisingly three-dimensional properties. Striking Rosewood bridge, headstock veneer, and fingerboard set off the Maple bindings, and Don’s medium thickness C neck is easy peasy for left hand work. The scale length is 25.5”, just a touch longer than Martin long scale for a snappier response, and that pairs well with the crisp tones generated by The Tree Mahogany here, and the warm, smooth trebles courtesy of Engelmann Spruce.
