One of Canada’s finest builders, David Webber is keeping the luthier tradition alive and well with the use of computer controlled machinery to maximize his efficiency, leaving more time and energy for the crucial detail work which separates a great guitar from a good one. The 2005 Webber Jumbo we have here is the result of Webber’s successful marriage of computer- and hand-made instruments: a guitar with a strong, vigorous voice that responds equally well to flatpicking or fingerstyle arrangements. The low-end has lots of bark, and the middle registers are big and clear, thanks to the time-honored combination of Indian Rosewood back and sides and straight-grained Spruce top. This instrument is, in a word, quick: very responsive, very clean. To top it all off, this Jumbo comes with a premium L.R. Baggs Anthem pickup system! This guitar comes with the original Datt case.

Dynamic is the name of the game when it comes to our Wechter Florentine crossover. Among Abraham Wechter’s myriad designs over the years, his Florentine is one of the most well-known, in particular for the ease with which these guitars can be played in a wide range of settings. The spacious body cavity lends extra projection and clarity, while the shallow C profile neck feels much more like your favorite steel string than a classical. The 25.5 inch scale shines for fingerstyle compositions, but has enough tension for use with a pick; the Barbera Soloist pickup amplified both modes handsomely.
Quilted Maple make up the back and sides, Red Cedar the top, and the rosette partitions up the natural Cedar grain with sparkling Abalone that has an extra three-dimenionsionality that quickly catches the eye. Of course this model comes with a Florentine Cutaway, and this crossover guitar also features a strap button so you can easily play while standing—no more relegated to squeaky chairs on stage! In incredible condition, this Wechter Florentine was built between 2005 and 2008 and has opened up sweetly, and combines the punchy drive of its Maple with Cedar warmth and overtones for a well-balanced voice, both acoustic and amplified.

New Lambe Jumbo 000 Brazilian/Adirondack (Red)
This is the first guitar we have had in the shop from North Carolina-based luthier Wes Lambe, and boy are we impressed. Just holding this Jumbo 000, you really get a sense of the passion Wes has for building guitars. Wes has a great ear when its comes to voicing his instruments, and this particular one has a full and rich tone with a panoply of pleasing overtones. The time-honored combination of Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce has been utilized to full effect here, and the evenness of tone and power from string to string, up and down the fingerboard, is remarkable. Without a doubt, this is a perfect fingerstyle guitar, with enough headroom to be really dug into with a plectrum if needed. Wes has garnered some high praise from incredible players like Pat Metheny, Charlie Hunter, Mark Kelly, and quite a few others, so you know his guitars can really sing. Grab this little gem while you can, it won’t be around long!

This F from Andrew White is good for whatever ails you. A versatile fingerstyle guitar that also holds up well with a pick, has a slick setup for easy fretting, über cool soundholes and circle inlays, and a soundport—what more could you ask for? The 16 1/4” lower bout adds some extra oomph that makes for impressive projection, even when played lightly. This White has a surprisingly dry voice for a Rosewood/Cedar guitar, but we find that it cuts very well through the mix and has a great string balance that makes it so effective for a multitude of genres.
The quest for the one guitar that’s perfect for every style may never come to an end, but this 2008 Andrew White F comes daringly close to versatility paradise.

We’ve got a livewire in the shop today! A 2008 E Model from Andrew White’s personal bench, this guitar combines contemporary aesthetics with tried-and-true tonewood combinations for a fierce, expressive style. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides? Check. Spruce top? Check. Flawless balance and well-defined bass notes, even in lowered tunings? Check. We could go on, but you get the picture: this Andrew White E Model is a firecracker in the hands of any fingerstylist who needs their instrument to handle the rigors of constantly changing tunings, remain responsive and projective under both light and aggressive attacks, and carry them into amplified territory with aplomb. That last requirement this Model E takes care of handily with an onboard K&K Preamp and Pure Mini pickup (running it through our Humphrey amp, for instance, was a mind-altering exposure to dynamic tones).
Tired of projecting all your sweet tunes out via the soundhole and having none for your own ear? Let the upper bout soundport provide a playback hack to keep you in the loop at all times. With trebles that are this fat and tasty, you’re not going to want to miss a note. Lastly, with an Ameritage hardshell case in which to store this Model E, you can rest easy knowing the no harm can come to this fingerstyle cannoneer when it’s out of your hands (which it won’t be for long).
