2022 Keystone Jujube, Brazilian Rosewood/Sinker Cedar
Keystone Guitars crafted us this wonderful Jujube model featuring Brazilian Rosewood plus Sinker Cedar. Snakewood appointments throughout, plus a custom and stunningly executed inlay design along the fingerboard and headplate, makes for a striking aesthetic–and these qualities of beauty are echoed in the voice as well. Great punch, clarity, and power, all at the same time coming from a small-bodied design. Frankly, we don’t know how Keisuke pulls it off.

This Klein M43 from 1997 offers a subtle glimpse into what Klein & Kauffman guitars are renowned for today. This variation features an offset soundhole, which creates an even more unique sonic soundscape with this instrument. Wielding it feels powerful; hearing it is moving, and looking at it encompasses both of those experiences. The Maple back and sides exhibit extreme chatoyance, reminiscent of looking into the bottom of a swimming pool in summer. The spruce top has aged just as finely in sound as it has in hue. But enough of us gushing over this—listen to the sample and watch the video for yourself. Brace yourself.

Klein & Kaufman crafted this beast in 1996. An absolute stunning set of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, with a gorgeous Spruce top. This guitar has had nearly 30 years of play at time of publication, and it certainly lets you know. All of the characteristics that we know and love about Klein & Kaufman guitars are present in this build. Powerful bass, and trebles that truly stand out. You’ll notice that there is something funky about this particular instrument, funky? Fungal? Ah yes, there are beautiful abalone mushrooms filling in the fingerboard and headplate. This is such a unique and singular piece that it made its way into the book “The Guitar” by Nick Freeth and Charles Alexander. These guitars are beloved by many famous wielders of the axe! Steve Martin, Joni Mitchell and Andy Summers to name a few. If you’re looking for an incredibly inspirational instrument as well as an exciting addition to any collection–look no further.

Taking this 2018 457 for a spin, and you lose track of time right out of the gate. This big boy fills your lap and vibrates your chest at first strum, and quickly sets the room to vibrating with the force of its voice. This 457 is a fantastic example of the expansive, enveloping, sonorous Klein sound—with some top shelf upgrades to set it apart. Mouth-watering gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood back and sides (chocolate-dark and black ink lines) with Spruce on top and a multiscale setup oof 26 1/4” on the bass and 25 1/8” on the treble. Moreover, the neck, bridge, and fingerboard are all also Brazilian Rosewood—this neck is a special rarity, and adds smooth sustain to the midrange that really helps fills out the voice. The expansive 18” lower bout loves, loves, loves to tune down to altered tuning territory (Cadd9) is a particular sweet spot.

Here we have an incredibly sweet OMC from Ray Kraut. A former apprentice of Ervin Somogyi, which shows in this instrument. Decked out with Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, and a European Spruce on top. This guitar has both classic and modern aesthetics balanced perfectly– which translates through the voice as well. Touting a deconstructed rosette that is subtle yet captivating. The look and sound of this instrument speaks for itself. Delicately balanced yet rich with haunting overtones and bloom that leave you wanting more and more. This fine guitar is a fingerstyle players paradise.

This guitar! Where do we even begin? This 2018 OM from Ray Kraut is astounding to both the eyes and the ears. A beauty, features Ray’s “Pale Moon” Ebony for the back and sides, and a pale set of European Spruce for the top. Not content with that already deadly combination, Ray then fashioned the headstock veneers, fretboard, bridge, and heelcap out of more Pale Moon. An abstract rosette completes the luthier’s portrait. Tonally, this OM pours out notes with such presence and definition, it takes fingerstyle arrangements and renders them in crystalline clarity.
The trebles have a faint blooming effect after the initial attack, and the string-to-string balance is superb. We had a lot of fun playing around in open tunings—the playability is likewise slinky and smooth. Just an incredible instrument across the board, and it comes with a Hoffee flight case to keep it safe and sound.
So much wow factor here, you’ll need to take two breaths.

George Lowden’s S body is petite, and offers an easy playing experience. It also affords an immediacy and intimacy to the voice that’s particularly present in this 2021 S-50. Such a unique sound. With Cocobolo and “Driftwood” Sinker Cedar on top, this one looks gorgeous as well—and these woods also help fill out the voice and add even more warmth and power to the overtones. The short, 24 3/4” scale is very easy on the hands, and adds roundness to the trebles. This Lowden is not one to let slip away; you won’t want to let go.

Cocobolo back and sides with German Spruce top, slender V neck, green-and-red purflings and rosette, and sharp florentine cutaway.

Wide awake and firing on all cylinders! Check out this 2009 Maingard GC if you’re looking for a livewire flattop that’s got headroom for a heavier attack, and sensitivity for a gentler touch as well. The Alpine Spruce top and African Blackwood back and sides form a dynamo for great projection, added color in the mids and bass, and the overall quickness that we find in every guitar from Marc. The GC body is 16 inches across the lower bout, but with the addition of both an arm bevel and a rib bevel, plus slender soft V neck profile, this Maingard remains easy to play. For this, and all the other reasons above, you won’t be able to put it down for long.

From 2020, this special edition Martin D-42 ‘Purple’ is #25 of 100. Made of Flamed Myrtle and Engelmann Spruce, this guitar stands out in the C.F. Martin lineup, not only because of the unique wood combination but also because of the ornamentation of this instrument. Abalone Purple Martin birds alongside abalone Mountain Laurel flowers make this instrument quite a sight to behold. As well as being visually striking, the sound isn’t quite what one expects from a Martin Dreadnought—sweet, round, and full. This guitar can be played lightly and still have power and depth.

Huge voice, powerful but precise, with more gears under the hood than you can shake a fist full of picks at. Our 1938 Martin D-28 is the epitome of the herrringbone dread. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides with hints of mill marks, and a forward-shifted Adirondack Spruce top that has all of the dried out and woke up qualities we expect from an 85-year-old top. This beauty has been played in extensively and is firing on all cylinders, and our repair staff have gone over it extensively for a clean bill of health. If you’re up to the challenge, this ’38 D-28 prewar powerhouse is ready to go.
