Brand New Kopp RJ, Brazilian Rosewood/European Spruce
Another client commission gone right! Our friend Kevin Kopp worked with us to pull off a custom RJ (Robert Johnson) model for one of our clients, and we couldn’t be more impressed by the results. Petite but curvaceous, with a voice to match. The voice is characterized by a roundness and warmth that quickly fires out of the soundhole; even balance across the registers for fingerpicking goodness. We picked out one of our personal sets of Brazilian Rosewood and sent it to Kevin for the build, which he paired with European Spruce on top and a period correct sunburst, Maple bindings, and Waverly tuners. The short scale, 24 3/4” fingerboard joins the body at the 12th fret, activating the top for added warmth and playability, and the medium-thick C neck profile feels instantly familiar and easy in hand.
Ready for a custom commission of your own? Give us a shout! We love working with our builders and our players to make something special.Other keywords: montana, 0147021, fingerstyle, tkl, 2021, 12-fret, blues guitar

Brand new Kopp L-02, anyone? This beautiful little blues machine features Mahogany back and sides, a torrefied Adirondack Spruce top, and a dark sunburst with tiger stripe pickguard for maximum mojo. We love how easily this L-02 plays; and the baked Adi top gives the voice a crisp and opened up flavor we’d expect from a proper vintage cannon, but here in a shiny new package. The short scale (24.75”) neck lends warmth and bloom, and we loved taking this one down to Open D for some country blues fingerpicking.

To celebrate his 10th anniversary, Kevin Kopp pulled out all the stops (and a few neighboring stops, too) for this force-of-nature K-200. Beautiful Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Adirondack Spruce on top, and a lovely hand rubbed sunburst to make that grain pop! In remaining true to tradition, he then added a hand painted pickguard, Waverly tuners, and a rectangle bridge plus MOP block inlays. The voice is nothing short of incredible. Bass response to shake your bones, and those trebles cut right through the mix. Clean projection, and when you dig in, it digs in too. When you let up, the tone remains crisp and defined. Well, it really does it all, and it does it all really well. Our 2016 Kopp K-200 10th Anniversary is a powerhouse.

Hot off the presses! We’ve just landed a brand new Kopp Nick Lucas model, straight from Kevin’s shop to ours. Paul is a big fan of all things Nick Lucas, so we decided to commission this particular beauty with the classic 13-fret neck and Celtic fretboard inlays. Flame Maple back and sides, Engelmann Spruce top, and a lovely burst to tie it all together. Kevin’s voiced this one with a firecracker mentality that’s excellent for fingerpicking, blues, and backing up your golden vocals. The bridge is made of Madagascar Rosewood, you’ll find a Bone nut, saddle, and pins, and a thin (read: 0.004”) lacquer finish to keep things resonant as possible. Tiger stripe pickguard and Waverly tuners are the icing and cherry on the cake.

Kevin Kopp started his own business after working for ten years in the Gibson Custom Shop. His guitars are reminiscent of old Gibsons. This particular model was made famous by Leo Kottke, who still plays one in his shows. This is Kevin’s Trail Boss Jumbo model crafted in Flamed Maple and Spruce and adorned witha Cherry sunburst throughout. With full Ivoroid bindings and firestripe pickguard it has a cool vintage Gibson style. The voice is big and bad as you might guess…
Moving to Bozeman, Montana in 1992 to work for Gibson, Kevin’s talents quickly moved him into the Custom Shop, where he was able to hone his skills working with luthiers such as John Walker, and master luthier Ren Ferguson. Together, they created many one-of-a-kind, customized high end Gibson guitars, or “Ginches” as they came to be called. After ten years of working in the Custom Shop, Kevin felt it was time to move on and explore the world of self employment in addition to expanding his repair shop at home and his skills. He became an authorized repairman for all of the “Biggies”, but his business started evolving into repairs & restoration of high end vintage instruments belonging to customers all over the North American continent and Japan.
Seeing dozens of vintage instruments literally from the inside out, Kevin started melding some of his own ideas and experiences with the tried and true construction techniques that he saw in the guitars, banjos and mandolins he was repairing. Starting his own line of high end guitars was the natural outcome, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Players instantly hear the rich tone and response in every one of Kevin’s guitars. Internationally known guitar artist Leo Kottke owns and regularly plays two Kopp guitars.
We’re all on a journey of our own and hopefully our paths cross, if only briefly. Kevin’s journey of exploration and constant pursuit of quality and tone continues every day and who knows — maybe your own pursuit of quality and tone has led you here, to this intersection.
