2007 Bashkin Placencia OM, Brazilian Rosewood/German Spruce
This multiscale Placencia from Michael Bashkin is to a fingerstylist what a dog is to a regular person: their best friend. Not only is Michael’s fit and finish flawless and his aesthetic elegant and contemporary, but his voicing techniques here yield an incredibly precise and responsive OM that can handle just about anything. 26 inches at the low E down to a standard 25.4 at the trebles gives the player the opportunity to dip down into C territory without swapping for heavier strings, and when you pair that with a slim neck profile and overall slinky setup you’re looking at an exquisitely easy player that offers up heaps of tone with even a delicate attack.
Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, German Spruce top, Florentine Cutaway, arm bevel, soundport—what more could you ask for? It’s guitars like this Bashkin Placencia that humble us, and push us as musicians to keep exploring the sonic possibilities of our field. And that’s about the highest praise we can offer for any guitar. Here’s an additional demo with Al Petteway: https://youtu.be/Oiv-m3x3JzU

Practically brand new, this 2018 Olson SJ still has that new guitar smell, and plays as smooth as butter in the pan. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, European Spruce top, Abalone trim along the top and back center strip, all wrapped up in a Calton case for safe keeping. The Brazilian back has some seriously dramatic figure and lots of rich, brick-red hues against blacker bands.
The voice of this SJ has an easy clarity to it that’s perfect for fingerstyle. The upper mids and treble response in particular are glassy and pronounced, lending an air of shimmer to the tone which really sang out when we dropped into DADGAD territory.

A lovely piece of history that’s alive and well! We’ve landed a beautiful Martin D-28 that comes to us from all the way back in 1938. Brazilian Rosewood to make a builder cry today, Adirondack Spruce top that’s yellowed to perfection, and honest play wear to prove this D-28 hasn’t been wasting away the decades under the bed. Lightweight and agile, the neck is smooth to the touch like an old, Mahogany banister, and it plays as easily.
Luthier Danny Bishop has recently gone over this vintage gem and given it a clean bill of health after replacing an oversized bridge with a vintage Martin bridge of the proper, original dimensions that Danny has kept in his shop for over 30 years. Danny confirmed the bridgeplate is original to the guitar, and after resetting the neck he installed new frets with period correct wire and dialed the setup in.
The heelblock is stamped #71802, making it one of the last built in 1938, of only 121 for that year. From October 1938 to June 1939, these were made with a 1 3/4 inch nut and no popsicle brace, making this particular period quite desirable.
This is the real vintage deal for a ’38 D-28 that’s seen miles of action, and is ready for a whole lot more.Other keywords: vintage guitar, dreadnaught, dreadnought, brazilain, adriondack, flat picking, flatpick, flatpicking, bluegrass, american guitar, cf martin, C.F. Martin

We relish classicals that capture our attention from the first pluck, and this 2003 Concert Classical from Steven Walter did just that. Clarity, energy, and responsiveness characterize this beautiful example of Steven’s work, here in Madagascar Rosewood and European Spruce. The elevated fingerboard in the style of Thomas Humphrey’s Millenium Classical helps upper fret access, and adds to the sheer resonance and projection of the Euro Spruce top. A single side dot at the seventh fret is a modern concession that we find incredibly helpful. The neck has a decently full D shape that’s easy on the hands, and playability is superb. Hauser-style Rodgers tuners are a wonder to look at, and even more so to tune, and the entire guitar is French Polished for maximum resonance.
This is a cherished Walter Classical that’s been taken care of over the past 15 years, and it’s definitely more than ready to keep at it!Other keywords: nylon string, stephen walter, fingerstyle, classical music, rosette, lutherie, luthier

Time has treated this Traugott well, indeed. Opening up since 2002, this BK model has an incredible voice today that’s equal parts clarity and power. This is Jeff’s large-bodied design that lends itself to both flatpicking and fingerstyle approaches—and we can attest that it thrives in both capacities. We were excited to discover that the back and sides came from Jeff’s special stash of his old-growth “Kentucky” Brazilian Rosewood (think “beautiful” times five), and Jeff sent us a letter of authenticity to certify the fact. Straight-grained German Spruce on top, Abalone rosette, and the fingerboard features position markers offset to the bass side.
Even with light gauge strings, we were able to take this one down to C# territory without the play feel getting slappy. This Traugott is a big fan of DADGAD and Open D as well. Standard 25.4” scale, 1.75” nut, and a 2.25” saddle spacing all felt natural and familiar to our hands, and the setup overall is slinky and smooth for effortless playability.
There’s a reason Traugotts are so sought after: surgically precise tone, and an understated aesthetic. Both speak volumes.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, brazilain, B-K, old growth, schaller, calton, flight case, finger style, fingerpicking, finger picking

One of our all-time favorite classical luthiers, Mr. Daryl Perry has blessed us with his latest work of art, #228 in Brazilian Rosewood and Italian Spruce. We’ve been eagerly waiting for this one to arrive, and once we had it in hand our expectations were quickly met, then exceeded. The first words that come to mind are clarity, control, and presence. From a delicate touch to a more aggressive attack, we found this Perry Classical to be even tempered and resonant in the kind of way that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. It is an intense instrument.
Daryl’s craftsmanship is delectably impeccable: one need only follow the curves of the flowers carved into the headstock for evidence of that. Marquetry trim along the back and sides, and a tight zigzag motif rings in the top, paired with the extensive rosette. A six-hole bridge and bridle-joined headstock nod to traditional construction methods, and the silver Rodgers tuners with MOP buttons completes the picture of a Classical guitar in perfect profile.
It’s an honor to offer this latest guitar from Daryl, and we look forward to discussing it with you.Other keywords: lutherie, scarf joint, brazilain rosewood, concert classical, nylon string, nylon-string, 651mm, 51mm, Rodger’s tuners, Rodgers’ tuners, hiscox

An instrument of this caliber speaks for itself, with volume and clarity. This 2015 Kostal 00 is what every 12-fret, small-bodied guitar should be: capable of anything. Jason Kostal’s work is par excellence, and it shows in this lusciously voiced 00. Kostal’s eye for beautifully grained Madagascar Rosewood pays dividends here, giving the body a mix of chocolate and caramel that is married perfectly to the German Spruce top and black Ebony bindings.
The tone is easy and rich, like velvet. Notes hang in the air for long seconds after they’ve been played. The middle register shines with lots of headroom, and nestles neatly beween a tight and warm bottom end and chiming trebles. This Kostal 00 responds beautifully to a dynamic attack, perfect for acoustic jazz or blues. The German Spruce top is crowned with Jason’s “Stained Glass” rosette, here in a sharp mosaic of crimson and rose. The fit and finish is flawless; one could expect no less from a master craftsman. If you’re looking for clean energy, look no further: our 2017 Ryan Nightingale’s fuel reserves are renewable, bottomless, and crystal clear. We have been, hands down, blown away by the clarity and power of this Nightingale Grand Soloist. Kevin Ryan’s guitars are an obvious choice for fingerstyle, and we had an absolute ball in standard tuning, right on down to C# territory. The Adirondack Spruce top lends strength and projection to the voice, and that pairs well with the smooth note definition and dynamic color that the Honduran Rosewood back and sides provide. The acoustic-flutes-and-arm-bevel combination gives the player a bit extra in their own ear, and keeps playability gossamer smooth (ditto for Ryan’s slim neck profile). Gorgeous Blue Paua Abalone trim, titanium bridge pins, and a Calton flight case complete the package.

There’s no one single guitar that’s perfect for every situation, but this like-new 2017 McPherson 4.5 “Camrielle” comes extremely close. The snappy, crisp bass response and Brazilian Rosewood clarity make chords really pop off the fretboard, and be it fingertips or flatpicks we found the voice focused, clean, and capable of conveying a wide dynamic range. An excellent choice for both vocal accompaniment and a fiddle, the extra bite and projection from the Adirondack Spruce top gives this McPherson a powerful, energetic response that easily fills the room.
Slipping into DADGAD territory, we found a softer side. Played gently, the Camrielle offers up mellow overtones and a bass tinged with warmth. It’s refreshing to find a guitar so at ease with different kinds of attack, and one that plays so easily. We can’t recommend this McPherson highly enough: it’s beautiful lfrom all sides.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, macpherson, brazilain, adirondack, 4.5 Camrielle, Ameritage, L.R Baggs

Hot off the presses! We’ve just landed a brand new Kopp Nick Lucas model, straight from Kevin’s shop to ours. Paul is a big fan of all things Nick Lucas, so we decided to commission this particular beauty with the classic 13-fret neck and Celtic fretboard inlays. Flame Maple back and sides, Engelmann Spruce top, and a lovely burst to tie it all together. Kevin’s voiced this one with a firecracker mentality that’s excellent for fingerpicking, blues, and backing up your golden vocals. The bridge is made of Madagascar Rosewood, you’ll find a Bone nut, saddle, and pins, and a thin (read: 0.004”) lacquer finish to keep things resonant as possible. Man oh man, this is a fun one. We’re talking about a virtually all-original 1958 Gibson ES-175 (right down to the curlicue pickguard) with the original Gibson Lifton case, PAF pickup, tuners, bridge—on and on. We’ve gone over this one with a fine tooth comb to make sure everything is in order, and we’re very happy to say this one is on the up and up! It plays like butter with a chunky C neck, and the PAF screams when you dig in, and purrs when you don’t. More mojo than you can shake a pick at! It’s in amazing condition to boot (but please, keep those boots away from this vintage ES-175).

This is a pristine example of what the folks at Breedlove Guitars are capable of: gorgeous fit and finish, smooth trebles, even balance from string to string. This Concert Exclusive comes to us from 2016, and is a part of Breedlove’s Masterclass Series with Brazilian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce. An L.R. Baggs Anthem is installed, which combines their Tru-Mic condenser microphone with an undersaddle pickup element that allows you to dial in just enough acoustic warmth to flesh out your amplified tone without dealing with the headaches of microphone feedback. The Breedlove Masterclass is vey well adapted for the Anthem; the clarity and color of the acoustic voice comes through loud and clear when amplified.
The Maple neck has a satin finish that we love! No risk of sticky hands when playing this beauty. Pair that with some serious Brazilian Rosewood, and you’re set (with an Ameritage case to keep it safe and stylish at the same time) for Breedlove heaven.Other keywords: fingerstyle, finger style, brazilain, breed love, trumic, lr baggs, lutherie, luthier

Benoît Lavoie has been in the lutherie game for a while now, specializing in everything from guitars and violins to cellos and double basses–all that diverse experience, when married with his exciting sense of curve and a scientist’s eye, makes for one heck of a luthier.
Our 2017 Multiscale wonder in Ziricote and Adirondack Spruce will shake the windowpanes right out of their frames. Benoît voiced the Adi top for a powerful response that’s best summoned with an aggressive attack. Dig in and dig in, but this Lavoie won’t top out! The multiscale fretboard extends from 27” on the bass up to 25.5” on the treble, and we found it soaked up C tunings like a thirsty sponge. The offset soundhole and large soundport that spans the corner of the upper bout help project this guitar’s girthy voice right to the player, but all that rich volume doesn’t stop at the player’s ear: this guitar also projects outward with fierce intensity.
Since we first sold this guitar in 2017, it’s had an armrest installed, and it’s been fitted for a custom Hoffee case (fits like a glove!). It’s been played in a lot, and has opened up immensely, but we think it’s going to keep up the moment for a long time to come.Other keywords: lutherie, multi scale, fingerboard, waverly, slotted headstock, venetian cutaway

A hallmark of the vintage Martin world: the D-18. Ours comes to us from 1937, and it’s kept itself in great shape for the past eighty years. The neck carve starts out in a smooth-cheeked C-profile, then slowly the point of a soft-V shape emerges as you travel along the neck toward the heel. Frets are freshly dressed by our repair team, and we’ve dialed in the setup for easy playability and lots of meat left to the saddle. The body was refinished at some point in this Martin’s past, but that über woody Mahogany tone is untouched! The tuners and bridge plate are both original, and If you look closely at the top, you’ll see the Adirondack is tight-grained and straight beneath the shaded burst. This Martin has been partially refinished by the venerable John Allison of Austin, Texas.
Mahogany dreads from the 30s have a dry, explosive tone that’s all their own, and this D-18 is no exception: digging in with a flatpick yields lots of crunch, and the projection is such that you might want to consider wearing ear plugs. It’s an obvious choice for Bluegrass, but we also enjoyed fingerpicked Blues and some forays into Old Time and Appalachian fiddletunes. The woody clarity of the voice lends itself to a variety of styles, and the setup is such that you can easily transition between fingertips and flatpicks and various attacks. Included is a sturdy Calton flight case to make sure she stays safe and sound whenever you have to put it down (you have to sleep eventually, right?). This Martin has come many miles to have arrived at our shop today, and we’re confident you’ll spend a lifetime exploring all those miles locked away in Mahogany, Adi Spruce, Ebony and Ivoroid.

This cannon’s gone electric! Talk about a talkative Dreadnought: we’ve got a 2015 like-new Martin D-45E Retro that’s loud, energetic, with a buttery playability to boot. Straight-grained Indian Rosewood back and sides–ditto for the Sitka Spruce top—make for a pretty box all on their own, but then there’s the 45-style Ivoroid and Abalone trim to really set off it off with panache. When you plug this dread in, that’s where a whole new palette of magic unfolds. Martin installed a Fishman Aura VT Enhance on this bad boy, which features a digital acoustic image of several vintage D-45s from Martin’s museum recorded with nine different vintage microphones in Bil Vorndick’s Nashville studio. Run through Fishman’s electronics, the result is a 2015 Martin that, when amplified, sounds like the vintage original. You can easily switch between three different mic blends and the straight pickup tone. So simple, it takes only a moment to dial in the sound you need.
