Another wonderful SJ from Brian Applegate. This guitar features stunning appointments including a Madagascar Rosewood back with an Adirondack Spruce top for crisp, robust tones with rich, full bass. There is also a Florentine Cutaway and an Olson style 5 piece neck equipped with Gotoh 510 tuners. Lastly there is a subtle wooden vine inlay on the fingerboard. Truly a wonderful instrument for the most discerning player.

Brian Applegate presented this guitar at the Newport/Miami Guitar Festival. It caught our eye immediately with it’s enticing Myrtlewood body full of golden tan and brown colors. It’s topped with Engelmann Spruce prized by luthiers for it’s rich, warm tone. The headstock is adorned with striking Amboyna and the etched tie block is beautiful cut from bone. Brian makes some of the prettiest rosettes around and this one features interlacing bloodwood diamonds set into the Spruce top. The combination of Myrtlewood and Engelmann Spruce makes for a lush, full voice with great projection. This is a loud guitar with very lyrical trebles that just long to carry the melody. It has 50mm nut and slimmer neck profile that will appeal to players of many nylon styles. This is a superb Concert Guitar from Brian Applegate.

Brian has truly arrived as a world class luthier and this is a wonderful example of his highly refined sensibilities. Add to that Brian’s typically first-rate appointments (the graceful bevel, the intricate rosette…) and you have a work of art right there in your arms. Your jaw will drop when you hear how big this thing sounds. Caress it lightly with your fingers, stand back, and say “wow.” We all did.

Brian Applegate is regarded as one of the very finest steel string guitar makers in this golden age of Luthery. But he is also passionate about the Nylon String guitar including classical, Flamenco and crossover instruments suitable for jazz, brazilian, and more. This guitar is the later, it’s is inspired by the style and shape of the Santos Hernandez guitar combined with the bracing structure of Hauser’s legendary 1937 Segovia guitar, making this guitar is traditional yet thoroughly modern. The gorgeous Flamed European Maple body, topped with European Spruce, makes for and energetic and clear voice that is well suited for many genres. The flamed maple neck has a slim profile that will also please the crossover player. Brian’s quality is top notch and he add some lovely details to this guitar such as a carved side soundport, etched Ivory tie block and custom rosette. This is one beautiful instrument in every way.

Our Dream Series from Brian Applegate has been extremely popular. It’s little wonder since Brian puts together the finest Brazilian Rosewood and custom appointments including extraordinary inlays on the fingerboard and headstock, a custom twisted rosette, abalone top trim, headstock trim and backstrip. And this particular guitar features his new armrest bevel and soundport. On top of all that this one sports insanely figured Sapelle for the bindings, armrest and rosette. All of the colors blend perfectly and make this quite a satisfying beauty, but it also sounds as good as it looks; amazing clarity, shimmering highs, full, warm bass. This is a complete sound from one end of the spectrum to the other. Simply stunning in every way…

Spruce Healdsburg Model
We saw this amazing instrument at the Healdsburg Guitar Festival and immediately ask Brian if we could have it. African Blackwood is becoming extremely popular and for good reason. The tone is deep and warm with a smooth midrange. It’s unique and haunting and offers a beautiful color to add to any arsenal of guitars. Being a show guitar Brian added some wonderful touches including a CNC cut soundport, armrest bevel and extraordinary custom geometric backstrip and back of the neck inlay. The pictures tell it better than we can so please scroll down and enjoy this Applegate SJ.

If we could play guitars as fine as this 2007 Applegate SJ all day, it wouldn’t be called work. Brian bedecked this SJ with all the bells and whistles: Florentine Cutaway, Koa bindings and arm bevel, African Blackwood back and sides, European Spruce top, and the piéce de resistance, a lute-style soundport in the upper bout! Applegate voiced this SJ with a fingerstylist in mind; listen and you can hear each string ring clean and distinct, and the African Blackwood lends a cavernous, haunting quality to the bass response.
These trebles ought to come with their own nutrition fact sheet; they’re that fat and juicy. Playability is breezy and glass-smooth, perfect for swift and efficient left hand work, and this Applegate handles lowered tunings like it was made for it (which is actually the case). Kept in superb condition, this 2007 SJ has opened up sweetly, and is ready to make music for many more years to come.

I founded Applegate Guitars in 2001, finding inspiration from my visit to the historic guitar-making district in Granada, Spain, and from my life-long love of wood working and music. Since then, I have been fortunate to do what I love–building fine acoustic guitars, individually and by hand, in my one-person shop. I produce every detail of each instrument with a true passion for the craft. Craftsmanship is particularly noticeable in the details–from the comfort of the neck profile to perfectly executed bracing or painstakingly detailed inlay. I hope this is evident in every guitar leaving my shop.
