Dana Bourgeois and co have nailed the recipe for a dynamite Dreadnought here: quick and responsive, lots of bark, with an easy playability and a classic look. This beau was built for the 2008 IBMA, number two of six, and comes to us with premium Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Adirondack Spruce on top, and a soft V neck that’s super easy to play. With a few years under its belt, this Bourgeois D-150 has opened up nicely, and we love the sweet flavor of the trebles, and the clean, refined bass response. Built for the 2019 Winter NAMM, so of course Dana Bourgeois and his team went out of their way to make this Dreadnought a showstopper. Not only that, but this is one of Dana’s Championship models—spec’d out just like the Dread Luke Lovejoy used to take first place at the 2018 Walnut Valley Flatpicking Championship with Sinker Mahogany back and sides and an Aged Tone Sitka Spruce top. That, along with torrefied brace stock and animal protein glue construction, makes for great balance across the registers and superb note definition. This is one you can really crank up the BPM on; no muddiness at high speeds here.

In excellent shape, built very recently in 2016, our latest Bourgeois Dreadnought is a beast of another order. This is Dana’s Fully Torrefied AT model, meaning the Mahogany back, sides, and top have all been baked for that old world vintage tone in a new package. A vintage-style Sunburst really sets off the woods, and even the braces are baked! Of course, Hide Glue construction throughout. Nickel Waverly tuners, a V neck with slim, 1 23/32” nut for deft fretwork and 2 3/16” spacing at the saddle. The voice is crisp and loud, and you don’t have to lay into the string to get a lot of projection. Of course, should you choose to dig in you’ll be rewarded with a dry tone with lots of headroom. This is a fantastic example of what happens when you pair traditional concepts with modern technology and design: the Bourgeois D Fully Torrefied AT.

Dana Bourgeois’ involvement with guitars predates by many years the company
that carries his name. His work has, in fact, enriched the steel-string guitar world
for almost 40 years. Although Bourgeois began playing guitar shortly after seeing
the Beatles’ historic performances on The
Ed Sullivan Show, his journey with the
craft of lutherie began in earnest while
attending Maine’s Bowdoin College in the
early ’70s. After devouri
ng Irving Sloan’s landmark book Classic
Guitar Construction, Dana figured he’d
give it a shot in his dorm room. “My
grandfather was a machinist, and my father
was an amateur wood worker, and between the two of them, I received
enough help to actually build a
guitar,” he remembers.
Clearly, Dana had found his
passion. By 1977, he had
established a one-man shop in
Brunswick, Maine, which soon
led to his first commission for
a hand-built guitar. “From the
mid-’70s to mid-’80s,” he says,
“my bread and butter was
repair and restoration, but I never stopped building guitars.”
