2002 Bourgeois Soloist European/Dalbergia Mysterioso
Here is a beautiful Bourgeois Soloist, which is an OM Cutaway design. This one features, Dalbergio Mysterioso, which means they think it’s Brazilian but can’t verify it. It sure looks and sounds like to us. The top is European Spruce adding to the power and clarity here. In typical Bourgeois fashion this guitar starts out in the Martin world of tone, but is sweeter, fuller and very pleasing to the ear. It plays very easily as well and has been well kept in excellent condition. If you are after a versatile guitar an OMC is perfect for you and this is a great one.

This Bourgeois Martin Simpson Model was a collaboration between fingerstyle master Martin Simpson and luthier Dana Bourgeois. The idea was a fingerstyle 12 fret slope D that would provide power missing in many fingerstyle instruments and also work well for strumming and flatpicking. The addition of a fallaway cutaway that grants full access to the 15th fret and generous string spacing make it an oustanding fingerstyle guitar and one of those rare designs happy to flatpick as well. This one is Indian Rosewood and Spruce for a classic tone.

Bryan Sutton is a friend of our shop and visits when he’s playing in town. He’s been here when we had one of these Banjo Killers that he inspired and it’s obvious he’s very proud of them. Dana Bourgeois delivers nicely here with a large guitar that sounds crisp and articulate (and never the least bit tubby). The figured mahogany sides and back deliver some punch and warmth, and the silky Sitka Spruce offers up just enough sparkle and shine. This is a rare guitar as they made only a few. She’s extremely playable and always great fun to pick up.

This is a replica of Bryan Sutton’s “Banjo Killer” and is one of 30 that are signed by Bryan Sutton on the label. Dana Bourgeois says: “ The BK Slope D has a deep, broad tone. Through wood selection and voicing, we push it in the direction of a bigger bottom end, a “lush” top end, and greater volume, similar to the characteristics of Bryan’s original BK. When I first started making slope shouldered Dreadnoughts, I went for something as different as possible from the balanced and focused sound of my standard Dreadnought. The Banjo Killer gets me back to that original idea.” We couldn’t agree more, in fact Bryon Sutton played this very guitar at our shop a few weeks back and it sounded amazing.

Dana Bourgeois’ involvement with guitars predates by many years the company
that carries his name. His work has, in fact, enriched the steel-string guitar world
for almost 40 years. Although Bourgeois began playing guitar shortly after seeing
the Beatles’ historic performances on The
Ed Sullivan Show, his journey with the
craft of lutherie began in earnest while
attending Maine’s Bowdoin College in the
early ’70s. After devouri
ng Irving Sloan’s landmark book Classic
Guitar Construction, Dana figured he’d
give it a shot in his dorm room. “My
grandfather was a machinist, and my father
was an amateur wood worker, and between the two of them, I received
enough help to actually build a
guitar,” he remembers.
Clearly, Dana had found his
passion. By 1977, he had
established a one-man shop in
Brunswick, Maine, which soon
led to his first commission for
a hand-built guitar. “From the
mid-’70s to mid-’80s,” he says,
“my bread and butter was
repair and restoration, but I never stopped building guitars.”
