Brand New, Sergei de Jonge 00, Ziricote/Sitka Spruce
What a treat to have a brand-new 00 from the one and only Sergei de Jonge. Crafted with Ziricote back and sides and a Sitka Spruce top, this guitar features a hand-rubbed French Polish finish on the body and neck that allows it to resonate beautifully. With Hipshot tuners and Ziricote appointments, this instrument is visually stunning and sonically extraordinary.
While its dimensions may resemble a Martin 00, it surpasses those boundaries in every way. Sergei de Jonge, a significant influence on many of today’s top builders, delivers an instrument that defies the stereotypes of smaller-bodied guitars. It offers a big, bold voice, a comfortable feel, and a subtle, natural aesthetic. Equipped with a K&K Pure Mini pickup, this guitar is ready for anything. Truly a joy to experience.

Cream of the crop, and then some. And then some more. This is what happens when Sergei de Jonge shoots for the moon, and nails it. His Chelsea Presentation model from 2005 fires on all cylinders, from voice to visuals. Extremely rare Birdseye Brazilian Rosewood back and sides pair up with Adirondack Spruce on top; Figured Snakewood appointments wrap the body and are used for both the bridge and the fingerboard; gold Rodgers tuners with Black Pearl buttons; Fossilized Ivory nut & saddle. After just one strum, we were struck by the immediacy and clarity of the voice. There’s crisp note definition from bass to treble, and a smoothness to the bottom end that really fills out the voice. It’s lovely in Standard, and also holds up handsomely tuned down—plus the silky smooth setup is an exercise in effortlessness. From tuner to tail, inside and out, this de Jonge Chelsea Presentation model is a work of art that stands in a category all its own.

Hands down, an incredible instrument. It’s obvious that Sergei de Jonge’s formidable luthier skills were brought to bear on an excellent set of Ziricote and Cedar for this Nylon Crossover. Treble notes drip with buttery goodness, the bass is velvety but crisp, and the string-to-string balance allows for complicated chord voicings to ring out in all their complexity. Sergei added a soundport to the upper bout bass, a Venetian Cutaway on the other side, introduced a gentle radius to the fretboard (with EVO frets), and carved the neck profile to a pleasing hybrid of the Classical U shape and a C.
The lattice-braced Cedar top is deliciously responsive, and with the addition of a Barbera pickup this beauty performs equally well amplified. Weighing in at a spry 3lbs 11oz, this Crossover is built to be played and played, and played some more. An instrument of this calibre: a challenge to ever set down.

Necessity brought de Jonge, 57, to the luthier’s trade in the late 1960s when he started guitar-playing lessons: he simply couldn’t afford to buy the instruments he wanted. “My teacher had a custom guitar that I lusted for, but when I found out how much it cost…well, you can imagine, my hair completely stood on end.”De Jonge had just started teachers’ college when he had a chance meeting with Jean Claude Larrivee, the soon-to-be godfather of Canadian guitar builders. “I asked him if I could work with him, and he said, ‘Come around to my shop on Tuesday and we’ll talk.’ So on Monday, I went to teachers’ college and dropped out. Then on Tuesday, I went to Larrivee’s shop and—luckily—became his very first apprentice.”De Jonge’s intention was to build a single guitar for personal use. But Larrivee made him work in the shop for six months before he was allowed to build anything. By the time his guitar was finished, de Jonge was broke, so he sold the guitar and had to make another one. He sold that one, too, and a third, and then he was hooked. “That’s how I started,” he says. “I just kept on going.” He now ships his guitars to the United States, Europe, and Japan.-Ottawa Citizen, July 2007
