This DC-H from Gage Halland is in the upper echelon of modern lutherie. Without a doubt one of the finest guitars we’ve had in the shop, Lost Tunnel Redwood on top and African Blackwood for the back and sides. This combination is one of ultimate tonal qualities, richness, warmth and idyllic clarity. Each individual note on this instrument has the viscosity of a full chord. Everyone here at Dream Guitars has been blown away by this guitar, and there is no higher praise our shop can offer. Aside from how it sounds it’s a sight for sore eyes — the natural beauty of the material that Gage uses so masterfully tells its own story. There is no need for additional ornation. As I write this I fight the urge to pick it up and play all day.

If this isn’t heaven, we don’t want to pass through the pearly gates. Gage Halland is one of the finest builders on the scene, and this our latest D-H model is resounding proof. A cool, balanced, articulate voice that the player can mold howsoever they choose, with focused trebles, round midrange, and expansive bass regiser. An exquisite modern fingerstyle instrument. The D-H body is Gage’s take on the Modified Dreadnought design, adding more air to the body and more complexity, volume, and headroom for expression. The back and sides are brick-red Cocobolo, one of only a few sets of Gage’s that he describes as “magic,” and on top we have a set of Moonspruce, plus arm and rib bevels. There’s even a palm bevel in lieu of a cutaway. Add to that a multiscale setup of 26.25-25.5″, as well as EVO frets and a Spalted rosette, and you’re looking at an heirloom instrument–at the beginning of its long life, and already so much guitar.

Additional upgrades include the arm bevel and hand bevel (in lieu of a cutaway), both executed flawlessly with intricate lambs tongue terminations. This 000-H has a crisp quality to the voice, it feels very precise and focused. The 000 size, with Ziricote back and sides, contributes to that added glassiness/punchiness. All of Gage’s guitars look and play flawlessly, but this one goes the extra mile with lots of shell along the body and the neck, plus those lovely dual bevels on top. We’d happily lose track of time with this brand new 00-H from Gage Halland any day. Not only does Gage manage to coax great projection and headroom out of a petite package, he manages to do so without compromising the warmth and treble presence where the 00 body already shines. The result is a full, comprehensive, engrossing voice. The use of Brazilian Rosewood (straight-grained and dark) and Swiss Moonspruce on top, of course, helps, but boy you could play out of tune on this 00-H and it’d still sound good. The 25.4″ scale length helps maintain a crispness and punch, as well as good string feel for the left hand. 12 frets to the body; gold EVO frets for longevity; and Gotoh 510 tuners at the headstock complete the package, wrapped up safe and sound in a custom Hoffee flight case.

Our latest build with Gage Halland has finally landed—and we don’t want it to leave. Gage’s 000-H body has fantastic power, clarity, and dynamic range without being a big guitar, and his fit and finish is flawless throughout with a gorgeous aesthetic. We spec’d this out with Reserve Ebony back and sides with a Swiss Moonspruce top, arm bevel and palm bevel in lieu of a cutaway, and Gage’s glass-smooth setup. It essentially plays itself. The voice mixes up great across the registers, with crisp note separation and a wide dynamic range. If there’s a bad note in this fretboard, we haven’t heard it yet.

Here’s a custom client build that we wish we’d commissioned for ourselves to keep! We worked with Gage Halland to spec out this DC-H to handle a range of tunings (thanks, multiscale) with the same powerful attack and crisp definition (thanks, Wenge & Moonspruce). Twin arm and rib bevels for creature comfort, plus the ubiquitous florentine cutaway. Brand new, and already such a monster. The voice is wide, wide open.

Halland brings it home again with his latest DC-H. We commissioned this beauty with Wenge back and sides and a Sitka Spruce top, plus Gage’s lambs tongue-appointed arm and rib bevels immediately after the last one came to us (and promptly sold before we could hardly list the darned thing). Here we find exquisite note definition and sustain, letting the voice simultaneously fire right out of the soundhole and also linger around the player with mellifluous overtones. It’s got gears, essentially. We love putting this one through its paces in C tunings (even managed to pull a low B out for a bit!), right on up to Standard pitch.
Halland’s voice is representative of the modern guitar sound: clean, precise, powerful, and dynamic. We love Gage’s sense of line and curve with his builds; the aesthetics at play here are reminiscent of his apprenticeship with famed Michael Greenfield, but very much in his own style.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, guitarbuilding, fingerstyle, holland guitars, 2020, gotoh, hoffee

Here we go! This fantastic example of modern lutherie from Gage Halland is his DC-H model from 2019, here in African Blackwood and European Spruce, and dressed to the nines with EVO frets, a multiscale fingerboard, twinned arm and rib bevels (featuring his hallmark lamb’s tongue detail work), and pinless bridge in the style of Michael Greenfield (with whom Gage apprenticed for several years before striking out on his own). This is a beast of a guitar, replete with a resounding bass register and smooth trebles. It’s a powerhouse for just. about. anything you can throw at it.

Now this is what world-class lutherie is all about! We’ve got a stunner OM-H from Gage Halland that sings like lightning converted into wood. Mahogany back and sides with old growth Sitka Spruce on top, weighing in at a touch over four pounds, and playing oh so smoothly with a glassy setup. We adore this Halland. It’s energetic and lively, well balanced between trebles and bass, and when combined with easy playability it makes for a guitar that’s easy to lose track of time in. EVO frets, pinless bridge in the Greenfield style, and a Hoffee flight case to keep it safe and sound—this Halland OM-H is the complete package.

This is our first instrument from Gage Halland’s Portland, Oregon shop—and we don’t want to let it go. This brand new OMC-H is loud, it’s crisp, and it is an absolute pleasure to play. Here’s the skinny: Honduran Mahogany back and sides, Sitka Spruce top, tasteful sunburst, and an arm bevel with lamb’s tongue ends. Pinless Ebony bridge, bone nut and saddle, deep Florentine Cutaway, and a Hoffee flight case for maximum protection. The fit and finish on this guitar is flawless—we’d expect no less from a builder who apprenticed under Michael Greenfield—and the setup is like spreading warm butter over steaming toast; you melt right in.
The tone of this Halland OMC-H is equal parts clarity, Mahogany crunch, and smooth projection. We had a blast in standard tuning, as well as DADGAD, and we’re more than happy to report that this beauty holds up so well to picks, we almost forgot to test its mettle as a fingerstyle guitar. On that front, the Halland excels. Isn’t this guitar brand new? You wouldn’t notice by the tone alone: it already sounds wide open and chock full of energy.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, handmade, contemporary guitar, abalone, gotoh

Guitars have always been present in my life, from my Dad playing them in the house to the dreadful high school bands I played in. I don’t remember a time where there wasn’t an instrument within arm’s reach.
As I started to build guitars, I quickly realized that in order to build at the level I desired I would need to find mentors and educate myself as much as possible. I happened to reach out to legendary guitar builder, John Greven, who allowed me to come ask questions and observe his process. Witnessing first hand his expertise in guitar making, my eyes were opened to what an acoustic guitar is capable of. After completing an intensive 6 month guitar making course, I was offered an apprenticeship with Michael Greenfield in Montreal, Quebec. The dream apprenticeship. During my time in Montreal, I began to develop many of my own theories on acoustic sound production and some of the inherent deficiencies in certain elements of the acoustic guitar. I like to think that I am applying the best of what I learned under the tutelage of Michael Greenfield, while steering the design and sound to what will be instantly recognizable as a Halland instrument.
