2006 Manzer Baritone, Koa/Spruce
This 2006 Linda Manzer Baritone comes to us with Koa for the back and sides, along with Spruce on top. It’s serendipitous that we received this instrument not long after Pat Metheny released his second solo baritone record, “MoonDial,” using, of course, a guitar crafted by Linda Manzer. This guitar features the Manzer wedge, which has such a positive impact on the comfort of playing a baritone. Tuner buttons and bridge pins made of fossilized walrus ivory, crafted by the one and only John Mickelson. With an Abalone inlaid rosette, this is otherwise a rather understated guitar, letting the natural qualities of the wood do all the talking. It comes with a really cool custom-colored Calton case. If you’ve been wanting to add a baritone to your arsenal, look no further.

A rare first for us here at Dream Guitars, a pristine 2021 Linda Manzer 16″ Archtop. Manzer has become synonymous with jazz music legends like Ted Ludwig and Julian Lage, among others, and when you play this instrument it is no surprise as to why. Understated elegance, and comfort; this guitar is a polyphonic playground. An Archtop sporting a soundport, that not only gives you “a little more of me in the monitor,” it also gives you a glimpse into the beautiful construction of this instrument. A classic combination of Maple and Spruce, with all the modern creature comforts. While this guitar may be built as an all-acoustic archtop, it is still quite electrifying. Comes safe and sound in a Hoffee Roadie flight case.

It’s been a good year:, we just landed Linda Manzer’s 21st (of 30) Pat Metheny Signature 6 Limited Run from 2016. Set up with Indian Rosewood back and sides plus German Spruce top, as well as many of the ergonomic features Metheny uses on his own Manzers. There’s the namesake Manzer Wedge and Venetian Cutaway, and added to that we have a groove carved into the heel, coupled with a thumb rest on the bass side, to coax the player’s left hand just a smidge closer to those uppermost frets.
The inlays across the headstock and fretboard are matched with the orange Calton flight case, and each of these 30 guitars is inlaid in a pattern unique to this run. The inlays were executed in conjunction with master inlay artist Mark Kett. Further, Linda used Copper for the side dots, and inlaid a Diamond at the 7th fret dot to boot. Linda also collaborated with Tony Duggan-Smith for the final setup and fretwork on each. Additionally, #21 features a CP-1 “Eric” Carlos Juan pickup system. Here’s a link to Manzer’s page where she describes the process: https://www.manzer.com/limited/

The 12-string market just got a little brighter: we have a 1997 12-string from Linda Manzer in Koa and Sitka Spruce! The 25 5/8″ scale has easy playability and great intonation across the numerous string gauges in play here, and the added comforts of a Manzer Wedge and Venetian Cutaway make this instrument further improve that playability.
The voice is excellently balanced, and responds well to both a gentle and robust attack. Well played-in and opened up, this Manzer 12-String also comes with a B-Band UST pickup which faithfully translates all the Koa-and-Sitka colorfulness to whatever amp you’d like. Across the fretboard you’ll find on of Linda’s rare Phoenix-and-Chinese-Dragon inlays which, with the simpler Ebony bindings elsewhere, acts as a gorgeous centerpiece to this already attractive display of lutherie at its finest.

A special treat if ever we saw one. Here we’ve landed a lovely Manzer Crossover from 2006 that’s opened up handsomely with Indian Rosewood and Cedar and is ready for more action. Crossovers are the perfect choice for the steel string player who wants to expand their tonal horizons and master a new kind of play feel with nylon strings, but with the creature comforts of a steel string guitar to make it easy to play and, frankly, more fun. Here of course Linda used her patented Manzer Wedge body design to tilt the guitar top up and back a touch towards the player, and added a cutaway for upper fret access. Then there’s a radiused fretboard and pickup + mic internal electronics. This one’s set up for just about every genre you throw at it.

We love Baritones. Hands down. And we love Linda Manzer’s work. Hands down. So naturally, we’re all hands on deck for this Manzer Baritone from 2017. Flamed Koa back and sides, German Spruce on top—and the kicker: multiscale at 28.75-28”, slim body plus Wedge for easy playability. This makes for a powerhouse Baritone that fits and feels familiar like a normal flattop. The treble strings have delicious weight and color, and we had a blast in A tunings, all the way down to G. It weighs in under five pounds, slim, trim, and ready for action.

Linda, Linda, Linda. This 2007 Manzer is a masterpiece. We love the voice: focused power, even response, well adapted for fingers and picks. In hand, the guitar plays easily with a slick setup and Linda’s namesake Manzer Wedge body ergonomics. This one’s been around for a few years and has opened up handsomely; the premium Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce are sounding oh so alive. Additionally, we found a soundport in the upper bout that comes with a removable BRW plug, for those times when you’re looking for a slightly different sound or for recording.

The treble clarity cuts through the mix, and contrasts nicely with the warmth of the mids.

For something off the menu, please ask for the Manzer Dehlicaster when you call in. This 2014 Manzer is really in a category all of its own, with Indian Rosewood back and sides and German Spruce top. The bridge is modeled after a sitar’s such that each string has individual saddles which are shimmed to the optimal height to provide the classic sitar warble and hum when you pluck the string. The neck on this one is wide and fat, giving the player lots of left hand room for whatever tunes you want to pluck. Additionally, this Manzer has been outfitted with a Schertler Magnetico AG6 soundhole pickup and S-Mic-M combo—and brother, it sounds so sweet plugged in!

A blast from the past, with tone to spare: our 1981 Manzer has a pocketful of mojo, and it ain’t afraid to show it. Indian Rosewood back and sides, Sitka Spruce top, and easy playability come together to make this one a challenge to put down. We found she took to DADGAD exceedingly well, but standard tuning brought it home just as sweetly. It’s really a great example of a top-of-the-line workhorse for both fingerstyle and flatpicked approaches, and it’s such an easy player for a variety of applications that we don’t expect this Manzer to gather dust in its case for too long. Moreover, this Manzer was originally built for Red Shea’s son!

To celebrate 25 years in the business, Linda Manzer built “The Bear” archtop, a stunning feat of Bearclaw Spruce and Maple with Kermode bears inlaid into the headstock. However, this wasn’t the only Bear she built! Linda also built a flattop version of “The Bear” for a client—making this the steel string twin to the original archtop Bear. Naturally, the top is a powerful set of Bearclaw German Spruce, and Manzer paired that with tightly flamed Koa for the back and sides, Her Manzer Wedge body, matching inlays of Kermode bears on the headstock, and the claws of a bear inlaid into the fretboard, reaching out for some berries. The fanciest gold etched “gold bug” Schaller tuners we’ve ever seen, fossilized ivory bridge pins, and a colorful Abalone, Purpleheart, and Boxwood rosette round out the beatific package.
The voice of this Manzer is very balanced, with a midrange that errs on the side of dry, and a well-defined bass to keep the bottom end crisp and responsive. Thanks to Linda’s wedge-shaped body, there’s quite a lot of space in the air chamber, which makes for great projection and sheer volume, which is sustained even with a light attack. In excellent shape, this one-of-a-kind Manzer Bear flattop comes to you with nary a scratch, except the raking claws of the bear inlaid into the fretboard, of course.

In the pursuit for the perfect fingerstyle guitar, you might want to give this 2001 Manzer a go: the combination of Linda’s larger Cow Poke body, multiscale (27″ on the bass and 25 5/8″ on the treble), and Manzer Wedge make this guitar a force to be reckoned with. Altered tunings across the spectrum intonate beautifully with the multi-scale fingerboard, and the combination of Brazilian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce makes for a voice with glassy clarity and fearsome depth.
One of but a small handful of guitars with matching Phoenix-and-Chinese-Dragon inlays, this Cow Poke has the looks to set it apart from the crowd (to say nothing of the distinctive Manzer tone). Need something to gig with? The B-Band UST pickup does the trick handsomely: we found that the richness and color of the acoustic voice translated faithfully into amplified territory across several different amps.

Whenever Linda Manzer is involved, you know the instrument in question is going to have an interesting story. This white beauty, naturally, carries an impressive history within its’ pearly body. In 1989 Linda was commissioned to build this guitar for a man’s lover, and it was to have no black anywhere on the guitar. Instead, The OM was to be white and red (hence Indian Rosewood for the back, sides, bridge, and fingerboard) with a Sitka Spruce top. Unfortunately, by the time Linda finished applying the last coats of white paint and let the lacquer cure, the man’s lover had left him. From there, this White Rose, as we’ve taken to calling it, has travelled the globe for several decades, until landing here at Dream Guitars.
Built with a woman’s hands in mind, this OM has a narrow neck (1 5/8″ at the nut), and feels very comfortable for anyone with smaller hands. The voice is spectacularly balanced, with a meaty middle register that really rings out with a flatpick. With age, the white paint has reacted with the oils in the Indian Rosewood to create orange-brown streaking across the sides and headstock–a unique manifestation of the vintage process!
