2007 McCollum Slope Dreadnought, Sapele/Adirondack Spruce
The late, great Lance McCollum has left us with an impressive body of work from terz guitars to double necks, harp guitars to wonderful flattops like this Slope D from 2007 in Sapele and Adirondack Spruce. Build weight is a slim 4lbs 4oz, which makes for an easy playing experience, and Lance outfitted this number with a slim neck profile and slotted headstock veneered with more gorgeously figured Sapele, plus gold Gotoh tuners. Scale length is 25 3/4” for added tension, pop, and power—all of which this McCollum has in spades—and a 1 13/16” nut for a little extra lefthand room. Herringbone trim throughout, plus Maple bindings to contrast with the Sapele and Ady.

Power and purr in equal measure. Lance McCollum really knew how to build ‘em. This Grand Auditorium comes to us from 1999, and that’s given it plenty of time to open up. And up, and up! Lots of power and projection under the hood, but notes have a smooth definition to them that makes the voice so sweet. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides pair up with European Spruce on top with a long scale setup at 25 3/4” to add extra pow! to those bass strings. Our repair gurus have just dressed the frets, and it plays like grass-fed butter. It’ll take equally well to both fingertips and picks to boot. There’s even an L.R. Baggs Lyric pickup system to carry it straight up to the stage.

The late Lance McCollum left us in the guitar world with an incredible body of work, from terz guitars to harp guitars and everything in between—this small-bodied Meghann model is right smack in that in-between spot: it’s got great projection and power when you lean in, without losing any of the clarity and intimacy of a smaller instrument. Walnut body with German Spruce on top gives an even midrange and crisp trebles plus sweet note definition across the range, and the fact that this McCollum Meaghan comes to us from 1997 means it’s opened up for over two decades—and it shows in the lively character of the voice. This beauty is also outfitted wiith a Highlander IP-2 dual source pickup system to carry you faithfully on to the stage.

A gorgeous Meghann model from the late, great Lance McCollum, coming to us from 2001. Lance was one of the good guys of the guitar world and his instruments are always inspiring and special. For this smaller-bodied instrument, Lance chose a premium set of Claro Walnut for the body and topped it with highly figured Redwood. This combination creates both a powerful and warm voice. The trebles are alive and sweet and very expressive. The bass is punchy and round. The scale is 25.75″ allowing this small guitar to work perfectly for both Standard and alternate tunings. A versatile beauty from a special maker.

A builder of custom homes for more than 20 years, Lance McCollum began his personal adventure into the world of handmade guitars never dreaming where it would lead. He simply hadn’t found the sound he was looking for in something he could buy off the rack. Born in Southern California, Lance started early on to gather the skills he would need in his current livelihood. At the age of 12 he redesigned his own and his friends’ BMX bicycles. After welding them into a new form he then embellished them, and the rider’s helmets, with fancy paint jobs. In his teenage years, he moved into designing and shaping his own surfboards, and reconfiguring the fin placement, and topping them off with stand-out airbrushed artwork. High school included awards won in drafting class and an affinity for jewelry design in art class. Playing since he was 12, Lance bought, reconditioned, and let go of many guitars, never quite finding the sound he was seeking. Finally deciding to take a Martin kit, the advice and counsel of a local luthier, and give it a go (yes, he even modified the Martin kit!), he saw a light at the end of the tunnel. The next guitar was not a kit, and by the fifth guitar, he knew he was on the right track. He is still working to perfect the sound he seeks, and loving it all the way. A die-hard fan of the traditional dovetail neck joint, Lance’s building style produces a guitar that has the tonal complexities of a grand piano with all the notes speaking independently, but still blending evenly with great sustain all the way up the fingerboard. In addition to this tonal balance, he steps outside the traditional building mode with the use of some of the world’s most strikingly beautiful woods and unique soundhole rosettes.
Sadly, we lost Lance to a aeoric aneurysm in 2009.
