Another example of why we do this: a custom build with a longtime client and one of our talented builders. This time we spec’d out a Premier model from Peggy White as a full time DADGAD fingerstyle guitar, outfitted with Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and Italian Spruce on top. That combination is definitely part of where the glassy top end and chocolate-rich midrange come from, plus Peggy’s chops with the chisel and the rasp. A geometric motif at the rosette offers a fun contrast to the svelte curves of the waist and venetian cutaway, and the very subtle arm bevel at the lower bout.

We’re excited to offer our first Peggy White guitar–so excited we went ahead and sold it before it even arrived! We were able to hold onto it for a few days in order to record and photograph this beauty before sending it on its way to its new home. We also took advantage of the opportunity to put this Premier model through its paces, and it more than met our highest expectations. Peggy was able to pair the dark, somber timbre of African Blackwood with the creamy, transparent tone of an Italian Spruce top–perfect for the fingerstylist with exacting needs for glassy string-to-string separation and voluminous sustain. The precisely balanced voice was a great fit for lowered tunings; all the way into CGD#FA#D.
Peggy is a professional musician, and that’s always a good sign in our book since that pretty much guarantees as a luthier they’ll already possess a finely tuned ear–and Peggy more than lives up to that expectation. Visually, Peggy’s got some exciting tricks up her sleeve, here employing a Kandinsky motif in here rosette, end graft, and backstrip for an effect that’s part homage, part original artistic statement. Are we excited for the next Peggy White to come our way? You can bet your favorite flatpick on it.

Peggy White is a builder based in Almonte, a small town in eastern Ontario, Canada. She belongs to a vibrant community of artists, musicians, entrepreneurs, and like-minded souls. Peggy grew up in a musical family and has herself been a musician most of her life, a singer/songwriter whose main instrument is the acoustic guitar. She realizes the importance of how the guitar feels in the hands of a player and how it should feel like an extension of that player. Her acute ear for music has been an extraordinary asset to her being the guitar builder she is today, and it’s that ear that helps her in choosing and optimizing each piece of wood she works with.
Peggy’s training began with Sergei de Jonge and from there she had the rare good fortune to apprentice with renowned builder, Linda Manzer for three years. Her last formal training was with Michel Pellerin in Quebec, Canada. This final stage of training is where Peggy honed her craft to produce her current, contemporary sound. Her craftsmanship is precise, careful, and methodical, producing exceptionally beautiful instruments.
