2008-2011 Beauregard MB Nylon, East Indian Rosewood/Spruce
Mario Beauregard’s crossover guitars are perfect, if you’re looking for a lightweight, responsive, stage ready instrument that practically plays itself. This beauty was built between 2008 and 2011 with a carved Indian Rosewood back, Spruce top, and a dual source K&K pickup system (combining a Pure Classic with a FanTaStick UST). This Beauregard MB Nylon Jazz weighs in right at four pounds, has a slightly radiused fingerboard and semi-hemispherical fret ends (plus side dots) for ergonomics, and a smart venetian cutaway to maximize fretboard access to the highest notes. This guitar is for the serious gigging musician, or frankly anyone who just wants an effortless nylon string playing experience.

Here we have another example of Mark Blanchard’s work from the ’90s — this time, a 1999 classical in Indian Rosewood and Engelmann Spruce. A slimmer neck profile makes this a great “crossover-ish” instrument for steel-string players.
1999 was still fairly early in Mark’s career, but we’re already seeing the beginnings of design elements that remain present in his builds to this day. For instance, the rosette: it features Honduran Rosewood surrounding a band of abalone. Honduran Rosewood appointments appear throughout this piece.

You’re not sacrificing the qualities of a true nylon-string guitar while stepping into the crossover world — this one strikes a true Goldilocks balance.
It’s equipped with a Barbera pickup system and showcases some truly unique appointments. Notably, you’ll find Larry Robinson’s custom cat-eye inlays and a beautifully crafted soundport in the shape of a paw print. All the cat clichés come to mind — cat got your tongue, the cat’s pajamas — but the real takeaway is how fun this guitar is to play. Exquisite workmanship, and an even more exquisite voice.

2002 Jeremy Locke Arched Back Classical Guitar, Tasmanian Blackwood/Spruce
From 2002, the “Arched Back Classical” from Jeremy Locke has Tasmanian Blackwood—which isn’t a common tonewood for the back and sides of a classical guitar, but based on what we have here, it probably should be more common. It comes with Gilbert tuners and a Gilbert-styled bridge. As the name suggests, this guitar has a carved “arched” back, giving it the classic Australian guitar tone. With Spanish Cedar for the neck, this is a whole lot of guitar for your money.
