2004 Greven Prairie State Lacewood/Sitka
On the long road of playing music, it’s inevitable that one day you’re going to yearn for something different to rekindle your practice and enliven your style. This 2004 Prairie State Jumbo built by John Greven might be that perfect side road to start trekking down–between the swooping curves, gorgeous woods, and thunderous voice, this guitar has a lifetime of exciting tunes to offer. Just look at the Lacewood used for the back and sides! You’ll be hard-pressed to find many guitars with such dramatically-figured wood (this is one of the only sets of Lacewood that John’s been able to get his hands on in his many years in the business), or with Lacewood’s combination of Rosewood richness with a twist of Mahogany-esque dry clarity.
Any lowered tuning under the sun is fair game for this creature; we tried everything down to Cadd9 and the bass notes remained crisp and pronounced. This Jumbo is based on the Larson Brothers’ Prairie State Jumbos (hence the 17″ lower bout), and the shallow sides add extra definition to the voice, making this a prime candidate for fingerstylists (not to mention the 1 13/16″ nut for easy left hand tricks). Ready for a huge voice with impeccable balance? This one’s for you.

John Greven knows what it takes to make a true vintage style guitar. Taking his experience as shop foreman at Gruhn guitars and applying it to his own builds, John has been successfully building pre war inspired guitars for fifty years. This is a 000 model in Palo Escrito and Lutz Spruce. John’s mission in guitar building is to produce a light, strong, and powerful instrument with a complex tonal range and texture. True to form, this 000 has a potent, cutting voice with a great presence that makes its self known even in a room full of guitars.

Here we have a spectacular 00 from John Greven made with beautiful Brazillian Rosewood and German Spruce. This guitar has such a unique style, almost vintage with a few hints of modern design thrown in. And with John’s tasteful two tone sunburst, it’s just gorgeous. Tonally this little 00 packs the kind of tone and volume you’d expect from a much larger guitar! It is rich and luscious, with the Brazilian adding complexity to every string and the Lutz Spruce being, in John’s own words, the “Best tonewood for finger style ever… [It] works particularly well on the smaller box because of its Adi like headroom but depth and warmth of a good Euro top.” Give it a listen and you’ll see just what all the fuss is about!

We are delighted to see this wonderful Greven guitar again. The minute I played this guitar at the Newport Guitar Festival we nabbed it for our customers. John Greven told me it was special and with the first few notes I was hooked. He calls his new 14 fret 000 design the NextGen because it merges the killer tone and liveliness of a 1930’s guitar with accurate intonation, a truss rod and modern tuners. So in the NextGen you get best of yesterday and today. Crafted from beautiful old growth Brazilian Rosewood and stunning Adirondack spruce, the tone is at once classic and fresh and the voice is simply huge.

John Greven does a really fine L-00 and we’re proud to offer this one to pickers and fingerstylists everywhere. It’s got that classic Gibson-esque sunburst vibe that we all love. The mahogany back and sides give it that classically punchy focus these guitars are famous for. Ragtime, old time, folk, blues, whatever… this is a guitar you’ll love to take out on the porch for hours on end. If you haven’t spent much time with an L-00 you should check them out. They occupy a very unique sonic niche and would complement any collection. This very Greven belongs to Craig Fuller, founder of Pure Prairie League and author of the song ‘Amie’. According to John Greven this top is very old Sitka from the Gibson Kalamazoo factory circa 1955. John came by it through a local builder who has had it in his stash for 20 odd years.

Greven nailed it when he named this one the J-35 “New Vintage.” Its deep, toasty sunburst and warm and inviting vibe bring to mind an old friend’s Gibson that I seriously coveted back in the sixties. Its mahogany back and sides pair with an Adirondack red spruce top to produce excellent balance, cut, and response. The mids and trebles are rich and throaty enough to hold your own in a crowd, and the bass wonderfully articulate.

John Greven’s FX design is an expanded 000 shape, imagine a 000 but a bit wider in the upper and lower bouts. The concept provides for a big, oversized 000 voice that has the focus and power but added bass and overall volume. The bass notes on this gorgeous Lacewood guitar are nearing the Dreadnought territory, big and bold. The overall energy is great, alive and vibrant, as Grevens tend to be. This one can be fingerpicked or flatpicked, it’s quite versatile.

John Greven is well known as one of the premiere Luthiers with an uncanny knack for building new instruments that sound and feel 100 years old. This 000 is a prime example of his white magic. The Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce body, like that of the famed pre-war Martin guitars, is powerful, resonant and rich. Every fret on this guitar sings out proudly thanks to the short 24.9″ scale. It’s especially adept at Blues but is happy to move to Celtic, traditional and many other styles. The beautiful 000 has a Brazilian Fingerboard and custom inlay on the headstock as well. A sweetheart Greven Guitar.

We originally sold this guitar as part of the LFAC auction, and now we are reselling it as like new to benefit the Ukulele Kids Club a second time!
We are excited to be partnering with the Ukulele Kids Club Inc., along with four outstanding luthiers: Steve Grimes, Jay Lichty, Peter Robson, and Ben Wilborn, as the platform that will sell four one-of-a-kind guitars to help bring the healing power of music to medically fragile children. It is our honor to support the efforts of these altruistic luthiers who have chosen to donate these fine instruments to benefit so many children in need. All partners and luthiers are proud to share that 100% of the proceeds from the sale will benefit the Ukulele Kids Club Inc.
Here we’ve got Steve Grimes’ FHP-33 parlor guitar with some asymmetrical curves. As with all four LFAC guitars, the body is Flame Maple with Sitka Spruce on top, supplied by Steve. In addition to asymmetrical proportions, Steve also includes a carved back like you’d find on an archtop guitar. Here that comes together in a slim package that nonetheless has a sizeable voice under the hood. Great string energy and quick, snappy decay makes for a solid blues guitar, but there’s also a touch of sweetness and roundness in the trebles that works well for a range of styles.

Hawaii-based luthier Steve Grimes knows how to make nylon string sing. This 2002 Cutaway model is a lovely number dressed up with Brazilian Rosewood and Spruce, Koa bindings, and a tasty Abalone palm tree inlaid at the 12th fret—plus the aforementioned cutaway for better access to those dusty top frets. Blue purflings set off the amber colors of the top and Koa bindings, and add a bright spice to the overall aesthetic. Combined with an elliptical rosette of Koa, and this Grimes Nylon String Cutaway stands apart from the crowd in all the right ways.

This 2017 SG-2 from Sam Guidry is a wolf dressed in wolf’s clothing. Threaded out in brick-red Brazilian Rosewood & Sunday-finest creamy Engelmann Spruce top, elegant Ebony bindings and a generously curvy neck profile. A flair of style in the geometric rosette and miniature soundport. All wrapped up in a Calton flight case.
And behind all those good looks, a voice to make you cry. Sam Guidry has nailed the balance game: each register is equally present, and equally articulate. The bass response is open with a hint of distant thunder, but doesn’t overwhelm the voice. The treble strings are juicy and round, with great sustain. The setup is fast and slick, and when you dig in with a flatpick the SG-2 responds with a ferocious projection. Again Sam aces the balance test, since the same tune but played with fingertips also sounds rich, full, and impressively loud. Individual note definition is superb.
Not only is this SG-2 killing it as a snappy dresser, it’s also got the fat & dynamic tone to back it up. The Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides is not only gorgeous, it’s also premium quality as a perfect quartersawn set salvaged from an old beam.

We’re quite pleased to offer a new addition to DG’s stable: a brand new 2016 SG-2 from luthier Sam Guidry, the senior instructor at the Galloup School of Guitar Building and Repair. By hybridizing the typical SJ body, Guidry provides the player with an instrument characterized by depth and expressiveness, a delicate balance which he achieves with aplomb. For the fingerstylist, this SG-2 is a tool of deadly precision, with an almost surgical separation of notes that allows your arrangements to ring out in all their complex glory. Explosive bass? Well-stocked here. Need treble strings crystalline but juicy? Think of these as sirloin diamonds.
Guidry’s aesthetic is understated to the point that the Birdseye Maple and Engelmann Spruce grab one’s attention, bound as they are by jet-black Ebony bindings and appointed with Spalted Maple around the soundhole and with Ebony lines inlaid into the headstock veneer. The well-rounded C profile neck is intensely comfortable such that the left hand is smoothly cradled from thumb to knuckles. Add to that a slightly elevated fingerboard and you’ve got an instrument well-honed for fingerstyle, or practically anything else you’d care to throw at it. If you’re looking for a responsive, articulate powerhouse, this SG-2 is a hands down winner.
We recently hosted Clive Carroll for a series of lessons and performances here at Dream, and while he was here he recorded “The Prince’s Waltz” on Sam’s SG-2.
