2020 Kostal OM, Indian Rosewood/German Spruce
With a guitar from Jason Kostal, we know we’ve got a special treat in store. After apprenticing under the godfather of modern guitarbuilding, Ervin Somogyi, Kostal struck out on his own several years back, and he’s been hard at work honing his own style and voice. The result? This work of elegance from 2020. Here Jason lets the tonewoods speak for themselves—dark Indian Rosewood, pale German Spruce, Rosewood bridge and two-tone headstock veneers. At the soundhole he used his trademark Stained Glass rosette to add a splash of color (here a mix of purples, lilacs, and earthy pinks); otherwise, it’s the quality of the craftpersonship and the materials that dictate the aesthetic.
That understated quality is echoed in the voice to a degree as well. Note definition is smooth and balanced across the registers, and we love that the response is even and consistent along the fretboard. There are also some haunting treble overtones that come out under a delicate and spacious touch which we loved. The setup is silk smooth to the touch, just like every other aspect of this Kostal OM.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, fingerpicking, stain glass rosette, hoffee, 2-tone headstock, 171

Smooth operator from tuner to tail. This 2017 Modified Dreadnought from Jason Kostal is truly a powerhouse guitar, with clarity, elegance, and precision to temper the raw strength of the voice. It’s worth it just to see the jaw-dropping Brazilian Rosewood back and sides Jason used, here paired with a creamy German Spruce top that absolutely sings. The bass register has a rich and rolling fundamental that fits in well with a warm midrange. The trebles are crisp and defined, and cut through the mix. A svelte florentine cutaway, combined with Jason’s trademark stained glass rosette, rounds out the picture of a perfect Kostal Mod D. Premium Hoffee flight case comes included to keep this beauty as clean and ready for action as day one.

Jason Kostal nails the modern voice with his OM. This beauty is like new from 2020, and appointed like fine wine: dark, dark, dark. Gorgeous Macassar Ebony back and sides with Sinker Redwood on top—velvet-rich and warm. It’s exquisite for fingerstyle, especially Open G. The trebles have a sweetness and overtone bloom that really fills out the voice. Is it really basically new? Surprisingly yes, considering the voice is so rich and opened up. The setup is silky smooth to boot.

Big voice! Comfortable body. We love this 2018 Kostal OM. Not only does it feature some seriously gorgeous woods (Figured Koa back and sides, German Spruce top) and Jason’s two-tone headstock, it also packs a fierce wallop with even a light touch. Crisp, clean balance from string to string, with a particularly lively bass response. The Koa lends an evenness to note definition that’s really sweet: big chords ring out in articulate, technicolor glory. The setup is slinky and smooth just the way we like it for standard, DADGAD, and beyond. It even holds up well under a pick. This is the kind of guitar you just don’t want to put down—precisely what we’ve come to expect from Jason Kostal.

Jason Kostal manages to fit a lot into his 00 model. This particular example comes to us from 2015, when Jason built it for the Memphis Guitar Show, and has a gorgeous set of Madagascar Rosewood for the back and sides, and a creamy German Spruce top. The Stained Glass rosette has an orange-and-red flair that’s reminiscent of fall leaves, and at the headstock you’ll find Jason’s two-tone veneer of Ebony over Rosewood. 12 frets to the body, Gotoh 510 tuners in gold and Ebony, and a 1 3/4” nut for easy playing.
The voice of this Kostal 00 is smooth to the point of transparency. We love how individual notes ring out with clarity and definition, and remain distinct to each other. The trebles have a cool, liquid quality to them that’s particularly mesmerizing, especially when you tune the guitar down. Built in 2015 but with hardly a mark on it, this Kostal 00 is in incredible condition to keep on making music.Other keywords: custom guitar, lutherie, luthier, hoffee, flight case, fingerstyle, oo, parlor guitar, somogyi

If it’s good enough for Michael Watts, it’s gotta be good enough for us! We love Jason Kostal’s work, and have happily followed his career for years now. This is a lovely 2012 OM done up in striking Brazilian Rosewood with a German Spruce top and Jason’s stained glass rosette and a Hoffee flight case. The neck carve has a full, generous carve to it that feels great in-hand, and on top Jason built a short, 25 inch scale fretboard to maximize playability and add a little sugar to the trebles at the same time. That sweetness pairs well with a warm and rolling bass response that fills up the voice, but doesn’t spill over into the other registers.

Sometimes elegance comes in small packages, like this 2018 Kostal 00. Jason’s smallest guitar punches far above its weight with a rich and focused bass response paired with glass-smooth trebles and exquisite string-to-string balance. This beauty comes to us with a striking set of Koa for the back and sides, and the calibre of German Spruce top that we’ve come to expect from Jason. 12-fret neck and 24.9” scale add a touch of extra warmth, and slip the setup into easy playing territory. Jason’s segmented headstock is here executed in Ebony and Mahogany; taken with the scalloped nut & saddle and “Stained Glass” rosette, the aesthetic of this Kostal 00 cuts a distinct figure that feels familiar and exciting at the same time. Wrapped up in a Hoffee flight case, this Kostal will be safe and sound wherever you take it.

An instrument of this caliber speaks for itself, with volume and clarity. This 2015 Kostal 00 is what every 12-fret, small-bodied guitar should be: capable of anything. Jason Kostal’s work is par excellence, and it shows in this lusciously voiced 00. Kostal’s eye for beautifully grained Madagascar Rosewood pays dividends here, giving the body a mix of chocolate and caramel that is married perfectly to the German Spruce top and black Ebony bindings.
The tone is easy and rich, like velvet. Notes hang in the air for long seconds after they’ve been played. The middle register shines with lots of headroom, and nestles neatly beween a tight and warm bottom end and chiming trebles. This Kostal 00 responds beautifully to a dynamic attack, perfect for acoustic jazz or blues. The German Spruce top is crowned with Jason’s “Stained Glass” rosette, here in a sharp mosaic of crimson and rose. The fit and finish is flawless; one could expect no less from a master craftsman. This guitar comes in the original Hoffee hardshell case.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, somogyi, finger style, oo, parlor guitar, 12 fret, gotoh

This is as close to a new Kostal you’re likely to get without shaking hands with Jason himself when he finishes a build. OM #131 was built only a few months ago in 2017 with eye-catching Flamed Mahogany back and sides and a German Spruce top. Jason’s hallmark Stained Glass Rosette sets off the creamy palette of the German top, and the extra thin finish which protects it from the elements (ditto for the Hoffee flight case) keeps that Spruce as lively and responsive as possible. The C profile neck has well-rounded cheeks, and the crest flattens just a smidgen.
The voice is a bit of a firecracker: the bass response has a distinct pop that projects out from the guitar, rather than enveloping the player. Similarly, the upper mids have lots of punch, and you’ll be surprised how well this Kostal OM responds to a medium to aggressive attack. Digging in, you really have to try hard to make it top out. All this crispness, and in a 14-fret, short scale 25 inch package, is further proof of Jason’s formidable lutherie chops. Top of the line fingerstyle guitar that’ll cut right through the mix? Look no further, your finely-honed axe has arrived.

It’s as though nature herself assembled this guitar; every angle so flawlessly joined, every graceful contour, each piece of Ebony, Blackwood, or Spruce flowing seamlessly into one another. Jason Kostal’s approach to guitar building leaves no room for superfluous detail: each component is honed to its absolute essence, rendering the instrument elegant and expressive. This 2012 Mod D in African Blackwood and European Spruce is a fingerstylist’s version of heaven.
The voice is immense and enveloping, but finely balanced between expansive basses and overtone-rich trebles, and the setup is glass smooth. Handling lowered tunings like the maestro it is, this Mod D offers a pianistic separation of notes and voluminous sustain, leaving your arrangements to hang in the air for long seconds after you’ve struck a chord. Excellently preserved, this Kostal is in splendid condition, and comes with an Ameritage case to match its elegant aesthetic. For the fingerstylist who craves an instrument capable of profound depths and haunting trebles, this 2012 Kostal will more than satisfy your need.

Just when we thought our day couldn’t get better, this 2014 Kostal Jumbo strolled into the shop and taught us all what a Jumbo guitar can really sound like. This instrument is incredibly close to being the perfect guitar: from the desirably straight-grained Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce to the flawless finish and glass-smooth setup, Jason Kostal went above and beyond the call of duty to create a Jumbo unique and powerful enough to bear his name. Played in a variety of tunings, the voice of this Kostal remains the same, teeming with profound bass notes and a panoply of overtones in the middle and upper registers. The treble strings in particular have a springy, energetic response that lends themselves to brightening up your fingerstyle arrangements.
Now we’ve seen many instruments over the years in wonderful condition, but this Jumbo might take the cake: there’s practically no evidence of any scratches or dings, and the action is delightfully smooth and effortless. Of course we have high expectations for anything that comes out of Jason’s shop, but this Jumbo blew us away–and what’s more, it’s the first Jumbo Jason ever built under his own label! You can find this exact guitar on his site to represent Jason’s Jumbo design. And, wrapped up in a Hoffee carbon fiber flight case, this Jumbo will remain in such a flawless state for years to come.

Two words come to mind when you play a guitar from Jason Kostal’s Queen Creek, Arizona shop: depth, and clarity. Unlatch the case, place the harmony of wood and steel in your lap, and witness the majesty. Dream Guitars has been lucky enough to host several of Jason’s instruments in their shop, and today we have a 2015 Modified Dreadnoughtthat fully lives up to Jason’s impeccable reputation. This Modified Dreadnought combines the cavernous, resounding low-end of a Dreadnought with an upper register that is agile and expressive. Across these and all registers in between, the tonal palette is expansive, full of color and scope, such that all notes ring clearly–and will continue resoundingly for some time. Kostal’s picked out a sultry, dark chocolate set of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, which help give the Mod D its dark, complex voice. Flatpickers seeking a tight, controlled response will be very happy with this guitar, and fingerstylists will cherish how balanced the registers are relative to one another. Kostal has included a Florentine cutaway for an edgy appearance and unrestricted access to the entire fretboard, a Manzer Wedge for comfortable playing, and Gotoh 510 Tuners with Ebony knobs for style and reliable tuning. When you consider his unique “Stained Glass” rosette and end graft, and his swooping segmented Brazilian Rosewood headstock veneer, you know you have a rare treat in your hands. This guitar plays as elegant as it looks–the German Spruce top combines silky grain and creamy color with endless sustain and haunting overtones.
Jason is a builder who stands by his work for all time, so any future Kostal owner, whether buying new or used, can purchase with the assurance that this is a lifetime guitar, one to treasure and play for many years to come, backed by the maker himself.

Additionally, the added weight means the guitar stays right in your lap: no chasing this one around.
