2017 Sergio Perez Segovia, Madagascar Rosewood/Cedar
Sergio Perez, building his own Classicals alongside his father Teodoro Perez, offers poise, balance, and sweetly defined power with his instruments—and we’ve landed a 2017 Segovia model that’s got all that and more. Named after the city and not the musician, this Segovia model boasts a dramatic set of Madagascar Rosewood for the back and sides, paired with Cedar on top for added warmth, and French Polished to maximum resonant effect. Rubner tuners with white rollers are smooth and efficient, which are also descriptors we find perfect for the voice: this Perez Segovia is precise across the registers, energetic when you lean in and mellow when pull back. Smooth playability matches the good looks found in an intricate mosaic rosette and rope-style top purflings. The Cedar top has already opened up handsomely since 2017, and it’s only going to get better from here.

2014 Perry Concert Classical, Indian Rosewood/European Spruce
Canadian luthier Daryl Perry is a modern master of the Classical Guitar—this number from 2014 is the proof in the pudding. Indian Rosewood body with European Spruce on top, French Polish throughout for maximum resonance, and outfitted with gorgeous Alessi tuners at the head. 650mm scale with 52mm nut, and a slim build weight just over three pounds, makes for an effortless playing experience. The voice is sweet, rich, and oh so enticing. Smoothly balanced across the registers, with a gorgeous dynamic range. Such a lovely mixture of elegance and power.

New Daryl Perry Concert Classical, Brazilian Rosewood/Italian Spruce
One of our all-time favorite classical luthiers, Mr. Daryl Perry has blessed us with his latest work of art, #228 in Brazilian Rosewood and Italian Spruce. We’ve been eagerly waiting for this one to arrive, and once we had it in hand our expectations were quickly met, then exceeded. The first words that come to mind are clarity, control, and presence. From a delicate touch to a more aggressive attack, we found this Perry Classical to be even tempered and resonant in the kind of way that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. It is an intense instrument.
Daryl’s craftsmanship is delectably impeccable: one need only follow the curves of the flowers carved into the headstock for evidence of that. Marquetry trim along the back and sides, and a tight zigzag motif rings in the top, paired with the extensive rosette. A six-hole bridge and bridle-joined headstock nod to traditional construction methods, and the silver Rodgers tuners with MOP buttons completes the picture of a Classical guitar in perfect profile.

2009 Perry Francisco Simplicio 1929 Brazilian/European
An instrument which offers the player the best of both worlds–a voice like stained glass, smooth and colorful, and aesthetics which are just as graceful, refined, and striking. Based on looks alone, it’s easy to see why Daryl Perry’s instruments are so valuable, but it’s when you put fingertip to string that the real magic shines. The voice of this 2009 Classical is at once immense and gentle; trebles have a profound clearness, bass notes are rumbling but crisp–the balance from string to string is surgical in its precision. Perry’s craftsmanship is similarly honed: from the smooth French Polish finish to the ornate Mosaic Rosette and relief carved Macassar Ebony headstock, all is clean and harmonious.
Based on a 1929 design of Franciso Simplicio, who learned from Enrique Garcia, one of the first luthiers to embrace the Torres style of building, this Classical is a loving tribute to one of lutherie’s finest. By adding Rodgers Baker Style tuners, Perry has given the player ultimate tuning control (like all other details, these tuners are characterized by butter-smooth operation), and with such an excellent set of Brazilian Rosewood and European Spruce (from the Jura region of France), he’s set the bar extremely high for other builders of the Simplicio style.

2015 Petros Grand Concert, Ceylon Satinwood/Alaskan Yellow Cedar
Here’s a Petros that’s at home in just about every setting. The voice is characterized by evenness and clarity, with great balance across the strings for both fingerstyle and flatpicking play, while the Grand Concert body size is big enough for power and projection, but still perfectly sized for comfort. Back and sides are a light colored set of Ceylon Satinwood, of which we’ve only seen a handful of guitars, and Petros paired that with an Alaskan Yellow Cedar top, plus Tasmanian Blackwood bindings, additional Abalone trim and appointments, and a venetian style cutaway. EVO frets are still going strong since 2015, and let’s be honest they’re going to continue to hold up great for years to come. A slender 1 11/16″ nut makes for quick lefthand work, paired with a slick setup for easy peasy playability, and a Fishman Ellipse pickup carries you right onto stage. Comes wrapped up in a custom Karura flight case!

2014 Petros Florentine Parlor, Madagascar Rosewood/Italian Spruce
We love the small-body guitars that come out of the workshop of Petros Guitars. This 2015 Florentine Parlor, with Madagascar rosewood and Italian spruce, has a lot to offer for such a small body. With a short scale of 24 1/2″, 12 frets to the body, and EVO frets, it also features extra-wide spacing at the nut. This guitar is not only a joy to play but also a pleasure to look at.

2009 Petros Baritone, Walnut/Tunnel 13 Redwood
The Baritone that remains balanced and defined across every strings is a rare thing, indeed, but Bruce and Matt Petros have managed precisely that with this 2009 Tunnel 13 Baritone. The trebles are strong; the mids rich; the bass articulate–and all working together harmoniously. This one’s got headroom for heavier attack, but response for a gentler touch too. 2014 Petros Dwende Parlor, Claro Walnut/Redwood
Bruce and Matt Petros know how to build what might be the perfect modern Parlor. This 2014 Dwende Parlor model has it all: headroom, clarity, balance, plus easy playability and a lightweight build (three pounds), and detailed apointments from tuners to tail. The back and sides are Claro Walnut, here paired with a Redwood top and short scale setup for a clean, expressive voice. Fit and finish is of course top notch. Celtic-inspired inlays sprawl across the various surfaces, and highlight the fingerboard with a woman or sprite figure cradling a guitar. The Butternut neck has a wider nut of 1 13/16″, which makes for an effortless lefthand experience for chords.

Balance is the name of game with this gorgeous 2014 Petros Celt 3–and it’s dressed from tuners to tail to play the part. Malaysian Blackwood back and sides pair with Italian Spruce and extensive celtic-style appointments throughout. A fantastic combination in our books, the Malaysian Blackwood (which is actually a member of the Ebony family) offers clarity and glassy note definition, and the Italian Spruce powers that up for great projection without making the guitar sound brittle. In fact, the voice is exceedingly velvety. Fit and finish are of course flawless throughout, and with a series of saddle shims included from Bruce and Matt Petros you can dial in the playing action for your specific needs at ease.

2012 Petros Yellow Rose Parlor, Ceylon Satinwood/Yellow Cedar
Sometimes, small packages come in big voices. This 2012 Petros Yellow Rose is sweet all the way down. Very smooth response, all glassy note definition and round, bell-like trebles. The overtone portfolio comes with deep pockets. Aesthetically, this Yellow Rose Parlor is dressed as only Bruce and Matt Petros can do it, with the best tonewoods around and extensive flower and vine inlays throughout. The back and sides are coveted Ceylon Satinwood, while the top is, of course, Yellow Cedar. The neck is also Yellow Cedar. The Yellow Rose motif is most present at the fingerboard extension, but you’ll find floral-and-vine work along the top trim, rosette, bridge pins and tuner knobs, even the truss rod cover and inside the guitar along the back center seam reinforcement strip.
An instrument designed for delighting every sense, this 2012 Petros Yellow Rose is waiting to be plucked and placed at the center of your collection.

2010 Petros Tunnel 13 Gold Special LTD, Brazilian Rosewood/Tunnel 13 Redwood
Dressed to the nines–or in this case thirteens! Here we’ve landed one of Bruce and Matt Petros’s T-13 Gold Special Limited models (number 15 in fact), sporting a dark set of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, Tunnel 13 Redwood on top, and extensive vine inlays along the fingerboard, rosette, bindings, bridge, and neck. The result is rococo and resplendent. The voice is rich and articulate at the same time, with great balance across the registers that blends well for both big chords and solo work. The light Butternut neck has a baby-soft V profile that feels oh so nice in hand, and the nut is a touch wider at 1 25/32″ for added room for the left hand. This 2010 Petros Tunnel 13 Limited comes wrapped up in a custom Karura case for those rare moments when you aren’t playing it.

2013 Petros T-13 Gold Standard, Claro Walnut/Tunnel 13 Redwood
We’ve got another Tunnel 13 Gold Standard from Bruce and Matt Petros in the house! Number 22 in the series, this 2013 Petros GC has a sweet voice wrapped up in a gorgeous Walnut-and-Redwood package with Pearwood trim throughout. As you probably already know, the Redwood that Bruce and Matt have acquired for these guitars came from the Southern Pacific Railroad’s Siskiyou Summit Tunnel #13, where they were originally railroad ties. With the characteristic warmth and balance of Redwood, plus the dry crackle of the Claro Walnut back and sides, this Tunnel 13 has a splendid, well-balanced voice with articulate lows and mids, making big chords sound rich and full with each string ringing clearly.
For both fingerstyle and flatpicking, the Gold Standard is comfortable and responsive–and the wider nut makes those big chords a cakewalk. 2009 Petros Applecreek D, Brazilian Rosewood/Adirondack Spruce
Once Adirondack Spruce has been played in enough, the woke tones it’s capable of are a thing to behold. Enter: this Petros Applecreek D model from 2009 with Brazilian Rosewood to boot. The voice is easy, smooth, and velvety rich; in the bass you have the perfect amount of emotive darkness, while the trebles remain cool and round and defined. The midrange is present and articulate to bridge the gap. What a fabulous fingerstyle instrument! The Adirondack soundboard has truly bloomed into a powerhouse since ’09, and paired with BRW and the large Petros D body (16” at the lower bout) the result is a big, energetic voice plus excellent string-to-string balance. What more could you ask for?

2006 Petros FS Cutaway, Pau Ferro/Engelmann Spruce
Livewire! We just took in a pair of Petros guitars that complement each other to a T: matching woods, but one comes in steel and the other in nylon. This here is the 2006 steel string FS Cutaway, in Pau Ferro Rosewood and Engelmann Spruce. The slightly wider neck is an absolute breeze to play, especially if you’re a fingerstylist who likes a roomy fretboard. 12 frets to the body, combined with a Venetian Cutaway, gives the tone added warmth and color in the mids without compromising the player’s access to those upper frets. An excellent candidate for altered tunings! We loved DADGAD and C# especially. And gorgeous Amboyna Burl appointments (and bridge!) to round out the package in elegance.
