2007 Petros Nylon Crossover, Pau Ferro/Engelmann Spruce
We just took in a pair of Petros guitars that complement each other to a T: matching woods, but one comes in steel and the other in nylon. This here is the nylon crossover twin with Pau Ferro (Bolivian Rosewood) back and sides and an Engelmann Spruce top. Love the tone of nylon strings, but prefer the playability and creature comforts of a steel string guitar? This Petros Crossover is perfect. Radiused fretboard, slim nut, Venetian Cutaway—Amboyna burl appointments to boot, and an Alaskan Yellow Cedar neck.

A work of functional art. This 2007 Petros Celt is, simply put, a complete guitar. The voice is pianistically tuned, it excels in DADGAD as easy as Standard, the setup is glass-smooth, the fit-n-finish flawless. Intricate Celtic knot work across the entire guitar, from the engraft to the wings of the bridge, all the way to the very tuner buttons and truss rod cover.
Brazilian Rosewood is here paired with Italian Spruce on top for an easy balance between the rich bass thunder and the bell-like clarity of the mids and trebles. This Petros is perfect for fingerstyle. We can’t recommend it more highly.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, bruce petros, matt petros, the celt, brazilain, irish, fingerpicking, guitar building

At first touch, the Petros sings. We instantly fell in love when this 2014 Celt Fingerstyle came through the door. Macassar Ebony back and sides with strong inking similar to Ziricote, creamy Italian Spruce on top, and everywhere you look Bruce and Matt’s Celtic knot motif ties it all together. A natural choice for DADGAD, we also found this Petros Celt to hold its own back up in Standard tuning, and on down to C# too. The voice has a smooth, glassy top end that goes down easy, and we love how consistently this Petros responds across the fretboard. The overtones are clear and present, haunting.

A sweet blend of darkness and clarity, liquid trebles and articulate midrange, glassy playability—these are the first things you’ll notice when you pick up this 2007 Petros Grand Concert. This is a fingerstylist’s dream machine, with a wide fretboard and clean note separation, and it’s ready to take onstage with an L.R. Baggs Anthem SL pickup. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Adirondack Spruce on top, and the lovely sunburst that spans the top was installed by none other than Bill Tippin himself!
This Petros will handle a wide range of tunings, but it’s also right at home in regular ole’ Standard, and it even takes to a flatpick well. We see a lot of guitars that try and split the difference between fingertips and picks, and we see a lot of guitars fail to satisfy either category. This Petros is not such an instrument; played softly or digging in with a pick, the voice remains clear and focused, with a touch of darkness in the bass response to really fill out chords. Plus this beauty comes wrapped up in a Hoffee flight case, so you can rest easy when it’s safely cocooned between performances.
A fantastic guitar that can be whatever you need it to be, when you need it: our 2007 Petros Grand Concert is a lifetime of music waiting for you.Other keywords: bruce petros, matt petros, lutherie, luthier, shade top, fingerpicking, finger picking, adirondack, brazilain, gc

As breathtaking as the first morning of spring with its promise of the coming warmth of sunlight, our 2010 Petros Yellow Rose FS is a work of art fit to breathe new life into your compositions–and your collection. Plucked harmonics yield haunting overtones, and the trebles shimmer with a focused edge, but don’t overpower the balance between the bass and middle registers, which are themselves expressive and rich. And how could the voice be any less resplendent? Petros blessed the Yellow Rose with gorgeous and rare Ceylon Satinwood for the back and sides, whose bee’s wing figure gives the guitar a sun-kissed golden hue, and an Engelmann Spruce top to ensure the tone of this guitar is comprehensive, articulate, and inspirational. With an Alaskan Yellow Cedar neck, the rich warmth is amplified further, and when the creamy ochre color helps showcase Petros‘ complex rose inlays across the fretboard, rosette, truss rod cover, and tuner knobs.
Designed with the fingerstylist in mind, this FS Yellow Rose excels in lowered tunings, maintaining that elusive crispness despite the lowered string tension–thanks no doubt to that Engelmann Spruce top and the unflagging craftsmanship of Petros Guitars. If you’re looking for a guitar that inspires as much for its appearance as its voice, your search is over: this rose is plucked for you.

It’s incredible to see the strides made in contemporary lutherie these days. Builders are churning out such resonant pieces of art: there’s a plethora of great guitars to play with. To us, though, there’s something special when you come across a builder’s early work, and discover how well their guitars blossom and open up over time. When we landed this 1980 12-Fret Petros, that’s exactly what we found. Rosewood back and sides paired with Cedar on top, and a striking one-piece Indian Rosewood neck with a 12-fret body join—aged to perfection over the past four decades with some righteous finish checks for vintage vibe, and an played-in voice to match.
This early Petros has opened up handsomely, such that the mids are crisp and woody, and the trebles cut right through the mix. Quite loud, and quite powerful, this Petros has a lot of tones that remind us of the vintage scene. We just refretted the board and dialed in the setup, so we’re happy to report this guitar is in stellar shape to keep on cruising.

2010 Petros Grand Concert, Tasmanian Blackwood/Italian Spruce
This Petros is immensely satisfying to play, especially if you’re of the fingerstyle persuasion and you need crisp note separation and string-to-string balance. Built in 2010, this GC is still quite new, but has already opened up a lot thanks to the loving ministrations of its previous owner (he wore down the original EVO frets, so we just refretted it with EVO for another round of music). Tasmanian Blackwood, tightly flamed, make up the back, sides, and headstock veneer, and you’ll find Italian Spruce with a faintly vintage yellow toner on top.
While this Petros needed new frets, the rest of the guitar is in superb shape. We’re happy to report the previous owner has diligently maintained its nearly new condition at the same time that they put in some long hours opening up the voice. This Petros strikes an impressive balance between individual note definition and a splay of overtones in the mids and trebles, so fingerstyle arrangements play out in full, crisp technicolor. The balance across registers is similarly articulate, and this beau takes to D tunings like a duck to water.

Let it rain, let it pour: this 2005 Petros Applecreek has opened up like a spring bed of tulips, and tastes about as sweet. Bruce Petros has access to some incredible woods, and it looks like he spared no expense in finding a deliciously flamed set of Koa for the back and sides, here paired with an amber-hued German Spruce top and Abalone appointments.
For the fingerstylist, this Applecreek Grand Concert is deadly: quick-playing neck and setup, trebles that cut well but don’t dominate the mix, remains lively and energetic in dropped tunings. Fit and finish are standard-issue flawless in the Petros style, with fossilized bridge pins and the curvaceous Petros headstock.
Responsive, effortless, and dynamic: the 2005 Petros Applecreek kills it.

Fingerstyle perfection: a 2007 Petros Grand Concert in Malaysian Ebony and Italian Spruce. Standard, DADGAD, and beyond, this Petros plays like a well-oiled machine. Petros Guitars can often be characterized by their balanced voice and flawless fit and finish, and this GC is no exception. Almost no effort is required; the playability as finely tuned as the string-to-string separation. The Italian Spruce top offers a creamy emphasis to the trebles, and this gorgeous set of Malaysian Ebony for the back and sides adds to the already impressive sustain.
There’s a smattering of mellow overtones in the upper-middle register which help flesh out the voice and create a lush response and bloom. If this Petros were headed out for a night on the town, it’d be dressed in the finest jet black tuxedo. It won’t take much more than a handful of notes before you lose all track of time and the whole afternoon disappears in a fit of velvet tones!

Bruce Petros has got the corner on the market for smaller-bodied guitars, and there’s a pretty good reason why: he’s absolutely excellent at consistently voicing smaller guitars to sound as lush and full as their larger-bodied brethren. Observe the 2003 Petros Applecreek GC we have here. An umber set of Indian Rosewood back and sides and Engelmann Spruce top with Cherry bindings exhude a tonality that is darkly complex and articulate. Each string rings clear as a bell, well-balanced and rich. The smaller body is a relief to play if you’re used to wrapping your arms around a bigger guitar, and, combined with the smaller neck profile, make the instrument immensely easy to play. The low end is strong and clear, and the trebles will ring, and ring, and then keep ringing. Fingerstylists, this instrument is calling to you!

You’ve simply got to see and hear this one! And you should call now, because she won’t be here long. This is Bruce Petros at the top of his game, having fun with a few different woods on one instrument. The Flamed Walnut alone would be worth the price of admission, but add a Redwood top and Butternut neck and away we go. The sound is big, warm, and toasty without losing any of the crispness you want in the highs. And you can play this baby as hard as you want and she won’t fret out or get floppy. Fingerstyle, strumming, single lines—whatever—this guitar is why we love this business. Here is the full story from the Petros Website: Southern Pacific Railroad’s Siskiyou Summit Tunnel 13 was built in the 1880’s using virgin Redwood timbers harvested in Southwestern Oregon. These timbers witnessed the October 11, 1923 hold up of the SP Train 13 Gold Special, pulling 13 cars, by the DeAutremont brothers. Four men were killed in the robbery attempt. When these magnificent Redwood timbers were salvaged from this historic tunnel after a fire in 2004, Petros Guitars managed to acquire some of the nicer sections. When these diamonds in the rough were opened up, it was discovered to be exceptional, master-grade tone wood, air dried in this tunnel for more than 120 years. Paired with light weight, figured Claro Walnut from Oregon and a light weight Butternut neck from Wisconsin, this guitar is light as a feather (3 pounds, 14 ounces) with the resonance of a 120 year old guitar. After a century of silence, Petros Tunnel 13 Redwood guitars are giving voice to the remarkable Redwood of Tunnel 13.

The Tunnel 13 Redwood guitars by Bruce Petros have been some of our consistent favorites here at the shop. This particular instrument is one that has a strong, yet supple voice, one that takes effortlessly to intricate and sustaining fingerstyle pieces and retains excellent note separation between the strings. This pianistic voice is the result of Bruce’s masterful building style using some of the finest Salvaged Redwood available on the planet in combination with its soulmate of a tonewood – Claro Walnut – back and sides. These two woods really do seem to make consistently rich, full sounding instruments, but it is Bruce’s abilities, honed by decades of practice, that give this one its refined, bell-like clarity. This is the only 12 fret cutaway version of the Tunnel 13 that we have ever heard of and it honestly is the best sounding one we’ve encountered to date. Gorgeous appointments like the carved Pearwood buttons and inlay and upgraded Abalone top trim make this a rare guitar that will have heads turning no matter where you take it. A five-star look, feel, play, history and sound.
