Brand New Big Hollow OM, Koa/Lutz Spruce
Gather round! Our latest Brand New OM from Bevan Frost of Big Hollow Guitars has arrived. Tight flamed Koa back and sides—take a moment to appreciate that lovely figuring—pair up with Lutz Spruce on top in a gorgeous sunburst. Oil Varnish finish throughout for maximum resonance, which this Big Hollow has in spades, and Alessi tuners at the slotted headstock for an added touch of elegance. The voice is smooth and balanced, an excellent player for fingerstyle, but with enough power under the hood to hold up under a flatpick as well, thanks to the versatile nature of Lutz Spruce. Bevan’s fit and finish are fantastic; the pyramid bridge is well executed, and we love the use of Bloodwood bindings to make the sunburst and Koa pop. A bird’s beak headstock joint on Mahogany neck is the cherry on top.

Oh, the joy of playing a light, lively, responsive guitar. This Big Hollow OM is nearly new from 2018, features primo tonewoods (Lutz Spruce on top, Flamed Koa back and sides), and plays like a sweet dream. The trim punching weight of under 4lbs makes for a comfortable session guitar, and the satin-finished neck is equally easy on the hands. The balance from bass to treble is even and smooth, which we often find on the best Koa guitars, but there’s a sweetness unique to the treble response that really sets this Big Hollow apart from the crowd. Alessi tuners, Bevan’s upgraded MOP girl inlaid into the headstock, and Bloodwood bindings are just some of the upgrades (there are Gold EVO frets and an Ameritage case as well).

A nearly new 00 from Bevan Frost’s Big Hollow workshop! Built in 2018, this beauty already sounds alive and open, all the better to show off the Honduran Rosewood back and sides and Adirondack Spruce top. Bevan finished this one with Oil Varnish in a dark and emotive sunburst that’s offset by Bloodwood bindings and herringbone trim. Rubner tuners and an Ameritage case complete the package.
The voice is equal parts sweet trebles and smoky bass. Bevan chose wisely when he opted for a dark sunburst; it matches the tone to a T. The setup is dialed in for easy playability, and at just over four pounds this Big Hollow 00 is a lightweight guitar that it’s easy to spend long hours with.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, honduras rosewood, adirondack, fingerstyle, oo, slot head, slotted head

This is the first Big Hollow that’s landed on our doorstep, and we were impressed the moment we tuned it up. This 2015 00 was built with four-piece, quartersawn Macassar Ebony back and sides and an Adirondack Spruce top, which lends extra power to the voice. We found this 00 to have a clean, focused sound, and the individual note separation precise and to the point. This small body 12-fretter responds surprisingly well to a flatpick, and is a natural choice for fingerpicking in standard tuning, as well as Open D.
EVO frets mean you won’t have to worry about a fret dress for quite some time to come, and the oil varnish finish has been buffed to a high sheen to keep the instrument as light and resonant as possible (this beauty is a trim 3lbs 14oz). Bloodwood bindings throughout are paired with herringbone appointments and matte gold Rubner tuners. Pyramid bridge for a touch of the traditional, but Bevan’s upper bout curves cut a more contemporary figure that sets this Big Hollow 00 apart from the crowd.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, oo, parlor guitar, adirondack, macasser, ameritage, fingerstyle

***Clarification: This is not a Froggy Bottom Guitar, but rather a project guitar built prior to the launch of Froggy Bottom. See below. This, folks, is an interesting guitar from the early days of independent makers. In the world of contemporary guitar construction, the names Bill Cumpiano and Michael Millard (founder of Froggy Bottom Guitars) are synonymous with early innovation–we have these men to thank for our present plethora of builds, designs, voices, and styles that populates the contemporary guitar world. Back in the lates 60’s/early 70s, when Bill and Michael had just begun their solo careers after years spent with Gurian Guitars, they shared a workshop to cut costs. They came together to build this one in the style of a Gurian #2 model, this guitar has a three-piece Brazilian Rosewood back, Spruce top, and a slightly smaller body that packs a punch (or several). The voice is sweet and rich and loud (thanks to the fully-opened Spruce top), and performs beautifully for American Trad music or for Blues and Rags. Note: This guitar does have a hand drawn label inside that reads Froggy Bottom, but it was likely done in fun during construction.

Who needs a soundhole when you’ve got a soundport like this! Our 2009 G2 from Tom Bills packs quite a punch with his soundhole-less design that maximizes the efficiency of the SInker Redwood top (plus Indian Rosewood body) for a voice that’s equal parts power, warmth, and punch. Additionally, the soundport offers a great in-ear experience for the player, making it much easier (and richer) to hear yourself. Flame Koa bindings throughout set off the Rosewood & Redwood combo, and an L.R. Baggs Lyric pickup system has been installed to carry all of that faithfully onto stage with you.

Tom Bills offers a fresh take on the classic flattop with this 2004 Genesis model. Eschewing the conventional wisdom of a central soundhole, Tom has redesigned the top bracing system with an upper bout soundport as the exclusive soundhole, making for maximum real estate from the top plate to vibrate and create tone. The result is added richness and definition, plus a powerful bass response. Ziricote back and sides adds clarity and transparency, and German Spruce on top for a touch of sweetness. Tom dressed this one up with a series of oak leaf inlays floating down the fretboard and bridge; otherwise, Tom lets the quality of the woods speak for themselvse. With an asymetrical shoulder design in lieue of a traditional cutaway, you still have great fretboard access all the way to the 21st fret.

The Tom Bills Genesis model features a top with no soundhole. Instead there is a large side soundport. This design allows for an entirely different way of bracing and voicing the top. Without the soundhole to weaken the top, Bills can use a Kasha inspired Fan brace pattern. The back of the guitar is also uniquely braced in a radial pattern complete with a few arched braces that leap over others. The result is a big and responsive voice with a lot of bottom end fullness. This Indian Rosewood and German Spruce Tom Bill Genesis will surely inspire your playing. Comes with a Calton Flight Case!

From Tom Bills’ Website “With deep roots in the past the G2 steel string boldly journeys into the future… the side soundport leaves the asymmetrical top unimpeded for maximum energy efficiency.” This is a gorgeous instrument that is impeccably crafted throughout. You need only peer in the soundhole to see bracing that is artwork. The idea of omitting the soundhole makes for great flexibility in bracing ideas and gives this Bills G2 a uniquely powerful voice. The player gets all the great tone and this would work great on stage. This one is top of the line all the way featuring premium Brazilian Rosewood, European Spruce and a stunning wooden Falling Leaf inlay pattern.

Every great Classical guitar has a story. Here we have an instrument modelled after a 1976 Miguel Rodriguez, Jr. Classical by Texas’ own Tom Blackshear, with a set of Brazilian Rosewood which was handpicked by Todd Taggart in 1997 (former president of Luthiers Mercantile International, or LMI) for his own use. Cherished and played for the past 19 years, this Blackshear Classical represents its Rodriguez heritage with a comprehensive and complex voice, and a silk-smooth setup. Taggart had an impressive eye: the Brazilian is chocolate-dark and gives the voice its complex and cavernous low-end, and the Spruce is perfectly opened up for rich, vigorous projection.
This is the sort of guitar which practically plays itself: the sustain feels endless, with haunting rich overtones in the upper register, thanks to Taggart’s Brazilian Rosewood and Blackshear’s flawless craftsmanship. Recognized as one of the contemporary masters of the Rodriguez school of Classical building, Blackshear went to great lengths to make this guitar worthy of the name.
