Ralph Bown J Indian Rosewood/European Played By Renbourn, Carroll
Ralph Bown is one of the top builders in the U.K. who’s instruments are played by the likes of John Renbourn, Clive Carroll and Martin Simpson. Bown Guitars have long been a favorite of ours here at Dream Guitars since Martin Simpson showed us his years ago. We are proud to be the exclusive U.S. dealer for Bown Guitars but we don’t get very many at all and most of those presell so we are thrilled to have a rare preowned Bown guitar for you and this one has some voice. It has Ralph’s distinct treble strings that are full and vibrant and clear as a bell. This being a J size it has beautiful bass response that is not overpowering but is indeed powerful. The understated beauty is elegant and refined and the playability and condition are superb. These are very rare and very special, if you are after a unique voice that’s inspiring and ear-catching.

1987 Bown Custom OM Ziricote/Sitka
Ralph Bown is an English builder with clients such as John Renbourn, Martin Simpson and Clive Carroll. This beautiful instrument is Ziricote and Spruce for amazing drive and power. It’s always amazing to us just how much tone Ralph can coax from mere wood. In addition to the tone this one is beautiful ornate with 45 style abalone, inlaid headstock, fingerboard, bridge and pickguard. A rare gem, at once inspirational, playable and collectible.

1962 Bozo 12 String Brazilian/Sitka Kotke Played One
Bozo Podunavac’s guitars always inspire strong reactions. Whether simple or ornate, once you’ve played one it is hard to forget. Back in the early 70’s Bozo built a few guitars for Leo Kottke — this one predates those! In fact, our research has uncovered that this very guitar is the 2nd 12-string ever built by Bozo! This one is crafted from superb old Brazilian Rosewood and topped with Sitka Spruce. There is a custom rosette and headstock inlay that showcase Bozo’s wonderful hand inlay work. Historically it is a very interesting piece, but what makes this guitar so special is it’s character. With its bold, authoritative sound, and the appearance of a road warrior, this guitar gives off the vibe that it has seen it all, and taken it in stride. Collectors and payers alike will love this guitar.

1967 Bozo Bell Western Brazilian/Adirondack Red
Bozo guitars are extremely collectible and highly regarded for their wonderful tone. Bozo Podunavac was among the very first independent luthiers who began the current golden age of luthery. His instruments are used by many recording artists and coveted by collectors. This one comes from the personal collection of recording artist Steve Baughman and was previously owned by Larry Pattis as well. It is a real player’s guitar carrying it’s story in the form of dings, cracks and checks, but with tremendous tone, great playability and years of music still locked inside. 2007 Chris Bozung J Dream Series Brazilian/Adirondack Spruce
Several years ago we hosted fingerstylist extraordinaire Pete Huttlinger for a concert, and while he was here we spent some time with his Bozung J guitar. After the show, we immediately understood why so many of our customers were telling us about Chris Bozung’s CB guitars. Chris builds a wonderful guitar in the traditional style, with a clear, articulate voice that’s full and powerful. We asked him to give this Dream Series an old fashioned sunburst, bound headstock, and to dress it up like it was going to the prom.
The Brazilian Rosewood here is old growth and top notch, salvaged from an old beam in Brazil, and the top is premium Adirondack Spruce. The soft V neck is insanely comfortable; the bass strings have enormous depth and clarity; lesser Dreadnoughts this Bozung eats for breakfast. We found strummed chords to be teeming with life, and flatpicked solos on the treble strings were fat and juicy (even flubbed notes sound great on this J).

2009 Bozung J Slope D Brazilian/Adirondack (Red)
One of Tennessee’s finest builders, Chris Bozung has been churning out knockout instruments for the past 10 years, ranging from traditional Dreadnoughts and Banjos to his Git-Jo (a 5-string banjo neck on a cutaway 000 body) and Resonators. Today we’ve got one of his “Vintage J” Slope Dreadnoughts in the shop, and it’s easy to see what all the hype is about: this guitar’s can cruise in high gear for flatpicking tunes without topping out (you’ve got to feel this calibre of projection in person), it’s got trebles that are crisp and very present, and the sustain is rich and resounding, thanks to the chocolate-dark Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and sunburst Adirondack Spruce top. Chris’s take on the classic 1930s Slope Shoulder Dreadnaught is a great example of a contemporary builder’s preservation of the aesthetic and tone of a bygone era.

2007 Bozung Special Brazilian/Adirondack Nick Lucas
We originally custom ordered this gorgeous CB (Chris Bozung) Special guitar and requested premium Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack spruce for a powerful prewar style tone. From the CB website: “Although the width of the body is slightly smaller than a dreadnought the CB Special’s extra-deep body means that it gives up very little “air space” to its larger-body cousin. The extra depth of the body provides the volume and power of a larger body, while the slightly smaller body width serves to focus the tone.The CB Special, aside from being an exceptionally beautiful instrument, is a pint-sized powerhouse whose surprising volume, clarity and focus of tone will satisfy even the most experienced and discerning player.” We couldn’t agree more, this is a little monster.

2008 Bozung Dream Series J Brazilian/Adirondack
The Dream Series Slope J from Chris Bozung is something special. Chris is a local treasure around Nashville but we are lucky to occassionally get a few of his guitars for our shop. This Bozung J features premium Brazilian Rosewood with gorgeous brick red hues and an Adirondack top that is powerful. The voice is wonderful mix of power and clarity brightness and warmth. It’s really got it all and is well suited for lead or rhythm work in worldclass style. It’s finished in a gorgeous deep 30’s sunburst with body and headstock bound in ivoroid for a vintage vibe.

New Bozung D-18 Mahogany/Sitka 40+ yr. old Woods
Here we have a brand new D-18 from Chris Bozung of CB Guitars. Chris called us up after he compared this guitar with a 1941 Martin and he thought this one was quite special indeed. We agree, it’s new but it’s already very lively and super strong. It’s clearly got the stuff to be a cannon with a little more playing time. Chris says both the Mahogany and Sitka Spruce are quite old, approx. 40 years and you can tell. Here’s your chance for a modern guitar that’s as good as the classics.

2008 Bozung Vintage J Quilted Mahogany/Adirondack
Once again, Chris Bozung out-Gibsons Gibson with this beautiful slope-shouldered dread. Play it softly and its quilted mahogany and Adirondack Red Spruce sound as warm and toasty as its vintage shaded finish. Strum it hard and it’s 1965 and you’re a young John Lennon banging it out on the set of “Help.” Players with a light touch will hear their sound bloom in a new way, those with heavy touch will love how this one can take a punch and stay on its feet.

Brand New Tim Bram Archtop, The Tribute, Mahogany/Spruce
Made for the 2024 Artisan Guitar Show, this Bram “The Tribute” archtop guitar features Mahogany for the back and sides, and Sitka Spruce for the top. The Tribute embodies all the DNA and makings of a classic archtop guitar, shaped into the profile of a Telecaster. With its “T-Style” cutaway, F-holes, adjustable ebony bridge, floating ebony pickguard, and a Kent Armstrong pickup, this is a very unique piece. The carved top has steep ridges along the cutaway and smooth doming on the bass side of the upper bout. Truly a beautiful and unique guitar to behold.

2010 Brandt Concert Brazilian/European
Here we have a stunning 2009 Greg Brandt Concert in Brazilian Rosewood and European Spruce. This is the cream of the crop, rarely do we see a guitar of this quality and refinement. Everything from the extreme high quality of the woods to the execution of the workmanship exudes Gregs passion and finesse for guitar building. This Concert has a strong and powerful treble section accompanied by incredibly smooth and round bass strings. Without a doubt this guitar will make a fine concert performance guitar, the sound and tone will fill up the room while the ease of playability will make sure the performance goes off without a hitch. As always, we think Greg Brandt is one of the premier builders in the classical guitar scene, this Concert guitar only helps to affirm that.
