2009 DT Brescia Figured Mahog/Port Orford
This 2009 David Taylor Brescia is decked out with striking Curly Mahogany sides and back, contrasting Ebony body binding, and a lovely Port Orford Cedar top. Port Orford has the look of Spruce but with a gorgeous warm tone. Together with the Mahogany body, it’s quick responding and full. The 7-piece Mahogany neck, with its slim profile, and the contrasting back plate are especially attractive. There’s lots of great music to be made with this one, but it excels for fingerstyle with its great articulation across the registers, and warm, woody sustain.

Here we have a DT (David Taylor) De La Rosa model in Hormigo back and sides with a Lutz Spruce top. This is a visually striking instrument with its dark red hues and yellow tones. Hormigo is a wood that isn’t seen much in the guitar world it really doesn’t look like any other wood being used, tonally it falls in the range of Rosewood, it has a strong fundamental with an overtone pallet quite similar to that of the Rosewoods. Fingerpicking is the real focus of this guitar, melodies pop out with the bright trebles, tempered by the controlled basses and mids.

Once again, David Taylor has built a guitar that will make some lucky player very happy. Her understated beauty doesn’t quite convey the range of moods and colors you can coax from the German top on this Indian Rosewood De La Rosa model. Play her softly and she purrs, dig in and she responds in kind. This is a versatile instrument from a wonderful builder, built to last and fun to play.

We are always on the lookout for an up and coming luthier with extraordinary talent. At the Newport/Miami Guitar Festival we were thrilled to discover the work of David Taylor, DT Guitars. Al Petteway and I both played his instruments repeatedly and were moved by the gorgeous tone and remarkable craftsmanship. I always look for the voice of a young builder and all 4 of his guitars on display had it, a sign to me that he is for real. What I sense is a powerful modern bass that is round and punctuated along with articulate trebles that willingly sing out the melody notes. These David Taylor Guitars also strum very well and the full sound is suitable for many styles from Fingerstyle to Jazz to Singer/Songwriter and everything in between. David happens to be the son of a wordclass knife maker, Gray Taylor, and carries on his families craftsmanship skills as evidenced by the lovely inlay work and fine details in his guitars. If you’ve been looking for a young builder to believe in you owe to yourself to learn more about David Taylor and his DT Guitars. This De La Rosa is crafted from rare Amazon Rosewood and Carpathian Spruce and features an armrest Bevel, Soundport, Cutaway, Carved Heel and gorgeous inlay work throughout.

Lynn Dudenbostel’s reputation is sterling, and for good reason: the man knows how to build ‘em right. This 2010 OM-28 is a fabulous specimen: loud and energetic, yet balanced, with slick playability all along the fretboard. Fit and finish are superb, with a great eye for detail at the miters and in the vine inlays across the fretboard. The tonewood front is the same: gorgeous woods, primo-primo quartersawn Brazilian Rosewood with Adirondack Spruce on top. A pyramid bridge and vintage-style gold Grover tuners complete the package, and this baby comes swaddled in a Calton flight case for maximum protection.

Our 2001 Dudenbostel Style-5 D is beautiful, plain and simple. 45-style appointments executed in fine style (so many miters), cream-of-the-crop Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce, and a rich and engrossing voice—beautiful pretty much sums it up.
Lynn Dudenbostel coaxes a lot of warm, dynamic tones out of his bass response, and here pairs that with crisp mids and trebles for a swift attack and projection. The voice shoots out and away from the soundhole very quickly, giving this Dreadnought a clean projection that cuts well through the mix. The neck profile is a V that feels full and comfortable in the hand, and on top the setup is dialed in for easy flatpicking action.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, dreadnaught, dread, abalone, mop, red spruce

This 000-45 (long scale) was built in 1996 with Brazilian Rosewood body and Adirondack Spruce on top, plus a well executed Abalone 45-style appointment package and 1 13/16” nut spacing. It’s a very comfortable fingerstyle guitar, and with the longscale setup it handles flatpickiing well to boot. It’s been well cared for and looks great for its age, and is more than ready for action. Delightfully opened up, this 1996 D-18S from Lynn Dudenbostel lends weight to the argument that older equals better. The voice speaks to the hundreds of hours of tunes that have already gone into these fine tonewoods: dry, cracklin’ bass from the Mahogany back and sides and a crisp set of treble strings with a toothy bite (a la Adirondack Spruce). With the 12-fret neck and Slope Dreadnought body, this Dudenbostel has an extra dose of warmth and sweetness that smooths the edges between respective registers, and the 1 25/32″ nut pffers a spacious left hand experience.
Want to fingerpick Appalachian-style in dropped tunings? This D-18S turns into a fingerpicking cannon at the turn of a few tuner knobs, responding as easily to a lighter touch as an aggressive flatpick. Have we mentioned that this Dudenbostel has opened up beautifully?

This Dyer (Larson Brothers) style 5 Harp guitar is a testament to their legend. In the early twentieth century the Larsons were at the forefront of harp guitar construction. Till this day their instruments are still sending ripples through the guitar world. At over a century old the Spruce top, and Mahogony back and sides are just raring to sing. As a standard six string it has an extraordinarily warm, well balanced voice. Throw in the sub bass though, and you have something truly special. Those five extra bass strings lend a full sonorous sound, and it’s magical. The playability of this guitar is superb. The V shaped neck and low action make it a joy play.

Jayne Henderson is a good friend of the shop, we love her work. The apple didn’t fall too far from the tree. Speaking of trees, this guitar used to be a White Oak, or well at least the back and sides of the instrument were. This is an uncommon tonewood, but in the right hands it is every bit as incredible as any of your standard “dry” tonewoods. This OM-18 is dressed in Carpathian Spruce on top– Donning the name “DOC” on the heel cap is an homage to the late great Doc Watson. Need we say more? If you’re looking to get into an incredible and unique OM that can do practically everything? Look no further.

The fretboard is decked out with southwest-style inlays, and elsewhere the guitar is trimmed out with Abalone.
