Such a lovely example of modern French lutherie. The bar is set high with such work from Dominque Delarue! Straight-grain Indian Rosewood body with Spruce on top, 650mm scale and 51mm nut, and a slim play weight right at 4lbs—this Concert Classical feels natural and organic in hand, and responds handsomely to a wide range of attacks. The Spanish Cedar neck is carved out to a medium thickness throughout with a U-shaped profile, and the body is bound with Rosewood to match the headstock veneer and bridge. Gold Alessi tuners with Snakewood buttons are an added touch of elegance to go with Delarue’s intricately carved headstock, and at the soundhole we find a similarly intricate mosaic rosette with red purflings to spruce up the Spruce top, so to speak. Built in 2020 but already wide awake, expressive, and powerful.

We are happy to invite another great builder into the shop; this time French luthier Dominique Delarue. A classical builder, Delarue began his woodworking career as a cabinet maker before becoming absorbed by the world of instrument-making in his adult years. Delarue‘s craftsmanship is impeccable, as you can see in the photos below, and he has a great eye for tonewoods (here we have an excellent sample of East Indian Rosewood back and sides and a tight-grained Western Red Cedar top).
The guitar is warm to the touch, and sings with a sweet panoply of overtones. The 2″ (52 mm) nut and Ebony fretboard allow for smooth left hand technique, and the setup allows for a delicate responsiveness: this is a sensitive instrument which reacts to the lightest attack.
This guitar comes with a Hiscox hardshell case.

When we say they just don’t make ’em like this any more, we mean it. And although Mike Doolin is no longer building instruments, he’s added some key features to his guitars which allow them to continue to play as beautifully as their first day, from a pinless bridge system to a fully adjustable neck, which allows one to maintain optimal playing action with the same ease as adjusting the truss rod: just one twist of an allen key. That said, this Dreadnought is set up perfectly already!
With slinky low action, spot-on intonation across the fretboard (itself with unprecedented access in the upper registers), and a voice clear as church bells on Sunday, this 2002 Dreadnought is much more than the sum of its parts. Speaking of parts, we’ve got a gorgeous set of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, fretboard, and bridge, and is paired with an Adirondack Spruce top that’s bound in flamed Koa for a package that’s exciting yet elegant. The trebles are blessed with sweet shimmering overtones all across the frets, and the low-end has a powerful projection and well-defined edge. Amplified with a B-Band A2 Stereo pickup, and wrapped up in a Calton flight case, this exceptional, unusual Dreadnought is ready for any gig, at any place.

Mike Doolin may be building some of the most recognizable guitars to ever be built, with his signature double cutaway. This isn’t for show, the double cutaway makes this easily one of the most playable full bodied guitars we have come across. Any fret you want to get to on the fret board can easily be accessed, now us acoustic guys can play way up high like they do on those fangled electric guitars. Boy is it nice. If you think is plays well, just wait until you hear it. The tone is full and resonant all over the board, yes, even up in the high register. This OM is one of a kind with it’s Macassar Ebony back and sides and Bearclaw Sitka Top, It will draw you in with its looks and keep you there with its sound.

This striking Jumbo, named Madeline, from Mike Doolin may look like a beauty, but trust us it’s a beast! Talk about a huge voice. This one fills the room with energy and bravado. The Cedar top over a Lacewood Wedge body just roars. This Doolin Guitars employees a Manzer Wedge body, extended cutaway and some very modern bracing ideas including a carbon bar running from the neck block to the tail. This support allows the top to be lightly built and the braces to be heavily scalloped. The result is power, but it’s controlled and balanced. This guitar can do it all, every style and do it well.
Add to Compare2010 DT Brescia, Brazilian Rosewood/Carpathian Spruce
More tunings than you can shake a multiscale fretboard at—well, maybe that’s the solution. We’ve got a lovely multiscale custom Brescia from David Taylor with an impressive resumé: multiscale board, soundport, pinless bridge, Ryan-style arm bevel, Venetian Cutaway. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides paired with Carpathian Spruce on top, trimmed in Rosewood and voiced for the wayward tuning fingerstylist.
From slightly longer-than-average on the bass (25 5/8”) to a trim 25” treble string, this Brescia is a blast in dropped tunings, but has a subtle rake to the frets that makes it easy to stretch your hands for that big-voiced chord. David was able to keep the overall weight very low, considering the extra neck mass and body dimensions (16” at the lower bout), and that translates into a response that’s crisp and leaps off the strings. This is an excellent opportunity for a custom multiscale guitar that won’t break the bank but might break the mold when you first string it up.

David Taylor’s first Modified Dreadnought, and he knocks it out of the park! The body size first popularized by Ervin Somogyi fits naturally in Taylor’s voicing style–the setup is slinky and fast, but the larger body cavity keeps projection, sustain, and bass response at an optimal balance. Like to play in DADGAD or more exotic tunings? This DT Mod D handles handsomely.
We found that flatpicks, fingertips, and even thumbpicks felt natural and easy on the strings, and Taylor’s balanced voicing allowed us to acentuate different registers as needed without the other strings falling quiet. The Schertler tuners have the sort of smoothness that is the envy of most other open-geared tuners, and the Florentine Cutaway and ornate bridge lend an air of elegance to this Honduran–Rosewood-and-Sitka–Spruce beauty.
