2010 Woolson Jumbo Parlor Mahogany/Sinker Redwood
Here we have a Woolson Soundcraft WSC Jumbo Parlor in Mahogany with a gorgeous Sinker Redwood top. Paul Woolson makes impeccably-crafted guitars that are bursting with tone and character. Not only are his material choices superb, but his design innovations result in a unique voice that’s supremely musical. His Jumbo Parlor model is a great example of this, with a small body size that’s complimented nicely by extra-deep sides, an elevated fingerboard, and a very light, modified X brace. What results is a big voice that defies it’s small size, with plenty of midrange bite, a robust bottom end, and just the right amount of treble chime.

This Paul Woolson SIG model Double Top guitar has us all smiling here at the shop. The voice from the Double top Adirondack(outer) and Lutz(inner) Spruce and African Mahogany body is bold and rich. The short 24.9″ scale makes for sweet and full treble strings and the side soundport insure you hear plenty of the round bass as well. Wider fingerstyle spacing makes it play as beautiful as it sounds and looks and the armrest bevel is super comfortable. Complete with a Jeff Hoffee Carbon Fiber Flight Case – our favorite. A very special guitar indeed.

Here we have a wonderful Woolson LG Model in Pau Ferro and Lutz Spruce complete with a soundport and lovely wood bindings from head to toe. Lutz is a wonderful wood that is admired for it’s ability to sound played in right away. It’s a hybrid spruce that is a blend of Sitka and White Spruce and it gives this small body beast good energy and volume. There is also a side soundport for additional pleasure for the picker. This guitar is well suited for fingerstyle and strumming, always clear and balanced.

We’ve known Paul Woolson for a few years but didn’t have the chance to play his guitars until the Miami show early in 2008. We never represent a builder that we haven’t played and been thoroughly impressed with and that’s just what happened in Miami. Guitarist Larry Pattis, a long time friend to DG, invited us to play Woolson guitars there and we were blown away because Paul Woolson has created a Double Top that is not stark or hollow, as some can be, it’s warm and full just with added power. To us that’s a great achievement and immediately ordered this guitar; an OM cutaway, Double Top featuring a Cedar and Lutz Spruce ‘skins’ on the top and gorgeous Cocobolo Rosewood for the body. We also requested Paul’s double back design to match the one we loved at Miami. We are delighted with this guitar, it’s clear, even, warm and powerful and all that is wrapped in a small, easy to hold, beautiful OM body. This is exciting… About Double Tops From Paul Woolson: “The term ‘double top’ has been thrown around for a few years now. In its current form, it’s relatively new technology. However, classical builders have been used the original form of the double top for decades. The concept of a double-topped guitar is pretty simple: Sandwich a thin layer of aerospace honeycomb material between two very thin tops (or skins as we call them in our shop). This is done in a vacuum process, which creates a very stiff and stable soundboard. The main advantage to this structure is that the top can be built very lightly braced and still remain structurally sound. A lighter top allows more energy from the strings to turn into sound. The final result, in its very simplistic form, is a louder guitar.”

Made for the 2013 Healdsburg Guitar Festival, this all Mango wood guitar is the latest brainchild and showpiece of luthier Jeffrey Yong. Internationally renowned for his innovative design features, Jeffrey has really pulled out all of the stops on this one. To begin, he chose beautifully figured mango for the back, sides and even the top, and the overall result is a unique, yet uniform aesthetic. The natural heritage of this instrument is further showcased by Yong’s inlaying of tree branch figures into the fingerboard, headstock, and back. However, the mango wood, it turns out, is more than just for show: this guitar possesses a sweet, balanced tone, with bass that smoothly blends and folds into itself as the trebles ring out clearly and distinctly. Additional features like the half-slotted headstock, scoop cutaway, smooth arm bevel, and soundport make this one as original as they come.

This is our first guitar from Jeffrey Yong, and it’s a beauty. Jeffrey builds guitars in Malaysia using exotic woods such as the Monkey Pod used for the body on this JJ model. This wood is not only stunning, with its natural golden color and deep figure, but it has a great energetic voice. It has the pump and roar of Mahogany and produces full, round notes. This Yong guitar also features his sculpted Cutaway, which allows access but doesn’t cut away much of the body. There is also an armrest bevel and a soundport to complete this gorgeous and fully loaded guitar from Jeffrey Yong.

When this 1971 David Russell Young Dreadnought first came to us, it was in need of some definite TLC. Our repair staff was more than up to the challenge! Now it’s on the other side of the operating table, and is playing great. Indian Rosewood back and sides with Cedar on top, incredibly opened up, and bears the play wear and marks of a much-loved, and much-played, dreadnought. Comes wrapped up in a Calton flight case to keep it safe these days, plus a K&K Pure Mini pickup so you can still take it out for a night on the gigging circuit.
While we’ve sold other DRY guitars around $50,000, this Dreadnought is a special case that was donated so we could restore it and do something good with it. To make that happen, we will be donating a portion of the sale to the Junior Appalachian Musicians organization to help their mission of promoting the growth of community around mountain music: https://jamkids.org/.

David Russell Young built guitars for only a handful of years, managing to rack up an impressive stable of world class players in the 60s and 70s, including the one and only Gram Parsons. We recently had a 1978 Dreadnought of his in the shop which blew us away (and promptly went right back out the door to its new home)—and now we’ve landed yet another beauty from 1978! This one also features a Cedar top, here with three-piece Indian Rosewood back and sides and Curly Maple bindings. Diamond position markers (and inlaid at the bridge wings), plus one of David’s hallmark butterfly inlays at the headstock, dress things up without taking away from the quality of the tonewoods themselves. The Cedar top has opened up handsomely since 1978, and we found this DRY Dreadnought worked very well for fingerstyle play; we almost preferred it. Especially if you tune down into DADGAD, where the breathy, articulate bass and mids have a bit more room to stretch their legs. Our repair staff have gone over this one tuners to tail and given it a clean bill of health after fabricating a new bridge, exactly replicating the original.

David Russell Young built guitars for only a handful of years, managing to rack up an impressive stable of world class players in the 60s and 70s, including the one and only Gram Parsons. We feel privileged to have a beautiful example of his work from 1978 on offer today, a Dreadnought with 3-piece Brazilian Rosewood back and Cedar top, Rosewood bindings, and a stylized phoenix inlaid in Abalone at the headstock. The neck is also Brazilian Rosewood, adding sustain to the voice and rarity to the build. The slick and easy setup makes for effortless playability, and we find this one is equally at home with picks as fingertips. It has some honest play wear but is structurally sound (evidence of its having been played in and woken up), plus the soundhole currently bears a Fishman rare earth pickup mounted at the fretboard terminus.
