2010 Santa Cruz Style 1, Brazilian Rosewood/Italian Spruce
These days, parlor guitars are starting to experience the same degree of popularity they enjoyed in their heyday during the early 1900s, thanks to advancements in modern amplification technology and a folk and traditional music revival. Naturally, builders are also expanding their lineups to include smaller-bodied guitars for their rich tonality and comfortable playability. The Santa Cruz Guitar Company has been making parlor-size guitars for some time now, and this 2010 Style 1 Custom is an excellent example of their work. Featuring a seductively figured Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and Italian Spruce top, sparkling Abalone flowerpot inlay and MOP snowflakes, and Brazilian Rosewood bindings, you’d be hard-pressed to find another parlor in this price range that looks (and sounds) so beautiful. All that Brazilian lends this guitar a rich and dynamic range, and when paired with the Italian Spruce’s drive, creates a voice with big-bodied sustain. Santa Cruz has given this Style 1 a soft-V neck for vintage appeal and easy fretting, and the 12-fret design makes the strings expressive but not overly tight. Whether it’s for American Traditional fingerpicking or Open D Blues, this Style 1 is a powerful instrument that’s hard to put down.

1988 Santa Cruz Tony Rice Signature Master Grade Indian/Adirondack (Red)
Here we have a real sweet heart from the Santa Cruz Guitar Co. This is a 1988 Tony Rice model in Master grade East Indian Rosewood and Adirondack (Red) Spruce. There is one thing instantly recognizable about the Tony Rice model, the enlarged soundhole, it is a feature lifted directly from Tonys own unique Martin guitar. We find the large soundhole helps to even out the tonal palette from bass to trebles, the bass is more controlled and even, while the trebles gain more power and punch. Another nice feature on this guitar is the low profile “V” neck which makes playing scorching fast licks a breeze!

Santa Cruz PJ East Indian/Sitka
It is quite hard to make a parlor size guitar that really sings, we have to say that Santa Cruz hit the mark with this PJ model. When you first pick this little beauty up and strike the first chord you will breath taken by just how much voice and tone a little box like this can give. The parlor guitar was originally intended for small intimate settings like a parlor or sitting room, usually soft voiced and small bodied, they never really were intended to go beyond that purpose. This PJ however, could fill up a large room with sound! It has plenty of bark and growl, play some blues or sweet classical music on it, anything really, it will sound great.

2010 Santa Cruz H-13 Mahogany/Sitka
Here’s a scarcely played 2010 Santa Cruz H-13 in gorgeous ‘Southern Belle’ Sunburst. Slotted headstock, Ivoroid Bindings and wood Marquetry S-29 perflings give it a classic vibe that matches the roar of this small body giant. The H-13 uses a 13 fret neck joint to get the bridge into the sweetspot of the top. This combined with the deepier body gives it surprising power for a small body 00 size guitar. Fingerpickers, Blues, Ragtime and Old Time players will love this.

2006 Santa Cruz VJ Vintage Jumbo Mahogany/Sitka
Round shouldered dreadnoughts have a unique sound,” enthused Santa Cruz president Richard Hoover. “Their deep, rich, bass and sweet, strong treble really shine in chord-oriented styles like country, folk and blues.” The Vintage Jumbo captures this tone perfectly, and enhances it with characteristic Santa Cruz volume, balance and complexity. This VJ harkens back to the old Gibson J guitars and does it in spades. We love the tone and character and the look is stunning.

1998 Santa Cruz H Indian/Sitka
This is a great example of the famous Santa Cruz H in a 12-fret, short scale, slothead custom sunburst design. The shorter scale length makes it a joy to play and it looks as cool as any vintage guitar you’ll find. The tone from the Rosewood/Spruce body is killer, it’s strong and clear, very fundamental with fewer overtones, so it’s great for Blues and Rags, music that requires clarity between the strings. This one being 10 years old makes it far better than new, as it’s open and alive, and it’s been kept in perfect condition.

2003 Santa Cruz OM/PW Mahogany/Sitka
From the Santa Cruz Guitars Website: “The advanced X braces, which is the bracing pattern “Pre-War” refers to, is a good tonal option for those using the guitar for smaller accompaniment or rhythm. This style bracing gives the smaller bodied OM an incredible presence and bass response, yet retains a good balance with strong midrange and bright powerful response.” We couldn’t agree more, this is a killer pre-war style OM.

2000 Santa Cruz 00 Indian/Sitka
From the Santa Cruz website: “The 12-fret OO is in many ways a smaller version of the 12-fret OOO. The OO’s scale is 24-7/8″ and the body size is close to that of a classical guitar. The short scale of this model lends a sweet and light quality to the tone. The OO is further differentiated by its unique rectangular bridge. This model is ideal for players seeking a warm and intimate tone.” This particular 00 has very strong, open voice and plays with ease thanks to the short scale. With its slotted headstock and full bindings on the body, neck and headstock, this is one very pretty guitar. Great for Old Time, Blue, Rags and Celtic.

2006 Santa Cruz 0 Koa/Adirondack Red
This is a stunning Koa 000 from SC that is completely counter-intuitive. Being Koa and Adirondack you might think this would be a bright guitar, but actually is very warm with full bass. The slightly deeper body, short scale and light build give this guitar a wonderfully refreshing voice. The wider spacing suits fingerstyle very well and the cutaway let’s you get up into the mandolin zone. A pretty one with a lush voice.
