2004 Taylor XXX-BE, Brazilian Rosewood/Engelmann Spruce
To honor Bob’s 30th anniversary building guitars under the Taylor name, a limited number of premium XXX-BE guitars were built. We’ve got number 126 of 150 here, an exquisite Grand Concert in Brazilian Rosewood and Engelmann Spruce that’s topped off with commemorative inlays across the fretboard extension and a slotted headstock on a 14-fret neck. Since 2004, this Taylor has been well-cared for with hardly a mark on her mirror-sheen body.
We were delighted to find an added layer of definition and sustain in the bass register which paired well with the smooth and crisp top end. Since it’s such an excellent fingerstyle guitar, we put it through its paces in a few open tunings, and found Taylor’s trademark playability to shine through in each. The body and rosette are trimmed out in dark Abalone, and the neck has a neck with a crushed velvet-like feel that remains smooth to the touch even after our hands warmed up, as can happen with a glossy neck.
It’s a wonder this Taylor XXX-BE has been so well preserved, and we’re proud to offer it in such fine condition.

The Grand Concert model from the 900 Series boasts all-solid tonewoods, V-Class bracing and a rich appointment package that makes it an inspiration in both sound and visuals. The 912ce’s compact body shape lends it an inviting, intimate feel while playing, made even more comfortable by the ebony radius-style armrest and slender Taylor neck. The interior bracing scheme adds more volume and sustain to complement the warmth and articulation of the rosewood/spruce tonewoods, resulting in a balanced sound with clear definition between notes that will especially please fingerstyle players. Appointments such as ebony binding and Ascension inlays in paua and pearl elevate this model’s visual character. It ships with ES2 electronics and a hardshell case.

Here’s a special treat from the fine folks at Taylor Guitars! Under the guidance of Andy Powers, they’ve moved in some pretty awesome directions, including this 2020 Custom GC 12-Fret with Queen’s Walnut and Sinker Redwood! The pairing of those two makes for a warm midrange and crisp trebles, plus an even note decay across the registers, made possible with Andy’s new V Class bracing system. Visually, the rich reds on top complement the dramatic and colorful figuring on the back, and Taylor finished this beauty in satin to let them both pop. Abalone top trim ties into the rosette for a tasteful touch of sparkle. 12 frets to the body plus a short scale setup make for an effortless playing experience—another hallmark of Taylor guitars. This one also features a slotted headstock to further set it apart.

At the lower bout they’ve added a Ryan-style arm bevel, and the Venetian Cutaway has been reengineered with a smooth contour to the neck heel and a beveled top edge for effortless upper fretboard work for the left hand. The Expression System 2 is plug-n-play perfection, warm and faithfully acoustic at a touch. The Grand Auditorium body boasts a generous 16 inch lower bout for added projection and power. We’re happy to report that this K14ce Builder’s Edition has a lot of gears, and responds beautifully to both a light attack and a more aggressive hand.

Bob Taylor’s tribute to the birth of the nation: Taylor Guitars limited run of the Liberty Tree. The Tulip Poplar back and sides came from the last Liberty Tree in Annapolis, Maryland, and the Sitka Spruce top is adorned with a post-Revolutionary War flag (the headstock features the pre-Revolutionary War’s flag). The scrolled Declaration of Independence floats across the fretboard extension and completes the picture of a patriot’s guitar: our 2002 Taylor LTG Liberty Tree, number 36.

Taylor pulls out all the stops for their Presentation Series guitars, and we’ve recently landed a fantastic example of that craftsmanship from 2011 in Cocobolo and Sitka Spruce. Taylor’s proprietary Expression pickup system is included to transition into amplified territory effortlessly, and for this Presentation grade piece they trimmed out the entire guitar in Abalone and added a comfy arm bevel to the lower bout for player comfort. The Cocobolo lends a clear and balanced quality to the voice that we found worked well for both quiet and aggressive playing. The setup is slinky and smooth per Taylor specs, and this beautiful Presentation P16ce is in excellent condition to keep on keeping on.

If the essence of the word smooth were to manifest in the shape of a guitar, it’d look something like this 1997 PS-14 Presentation Taylor. The contours of Abalone purfling across the Engelmann Spruce top and Rosewood sides, Pearl inlay across the fretboard, quietly rippling grain in the Brazilian Rosewood back, C profile neck like glass; the visual execution is strikingly organic. That velveteen flair carries over to the voice, itself silky and balanced. The bass response has a well-defined fundamental but doesn’t overwhelm the overall tone. The clarity across the strings is an excellent candidate for fingerstyle explorations, and if you let the treble strings ring out for a moment or two you’ll notice a pleasing swell of overtones that overtakes the voice as the initial note decays.
Taylor built this Presentation P-14 for the 1997 Musikmesse convention in Frankfurt, which helps to explain the painstaking attention to detail and seamless execution. The setup is just as glassy as the gloss finish; swift and silky. One of the most distinct-sounding Taylors we’ve had in the shop, this one gives many boutique-built guitars a run for their money.

Taylor guitars are known for their surgically-precise fit and finish, they’re clear tone, and effortless playability–and this 2004 Dreadnought is here to prove it! Decked out in Mahogany and Sitka Spruce, this Taylor 510-CE-19 isn’t your run-of-the-mill Taylor Dread: featuring a short scale (at 24 7/8″) and 14-fret neck, this guitar has an extra dose of sweetness poured over the dry Mahogany projection, and is even easier to play than a regular Taylor. We ran this guitar through its Bluegrass paces to great effect with a flatpick, but we found that with a thumbpick and some gravel in your voice, this Taylor made an excellent Blues guitar, with a punchy tone and crisp low end that sounds delicious with some palm damping and medium attack. Warm, punchy, and loud, this Taylor 510-CE-19 is a dynamic Dreadnought that’s equally equipped for fingerstyle or flatpicking styles.

By now Bob Taylor’s company has provided excellent guitars to generations of players since its inauspicious start in 1974, and in 1995 the Taylor team gave us this superb GABE with Brazilian Rosewood and Engelmann Spruce. They probably broke the mold with this one (but lucky for us, Taylor Guitars has quite a number of molds)–all the balance and focus of the Grand Auditorium shape, plus all the depth and smoothness from Brazilian and Engelmann, make this an instrument without compromise.
The bottom end is crisp and focused, and complements the middle and upper registers with excellent balance. With Taylor’s customary slinky setup and low action, this guitar is hungry for whatever type of tune you throw its way, from snappy Blues riffs and leads to DADGAD fingerstyle arrangements. And as far as appearances go, this GABE also takes home the award for most sharply dressed: the Abalone inlay across the headstock, fretboard, rosette, and bridge is flawlessly executed and exudes calm elegance. Its former owner was meticulous in his caretaking: although this Taylor is over 20 years old, it shines as cleanly (and without scratches) as a newborn babe.

This is a great playing, great looking, and most importantly great sounding Taylor 12-fret in East Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce. Simply put, this guitar is a joy to pick or strum. The short scale twelve fret neck makes for a nice, easy playability, while the cutaway opens up the higher frets for excellent access to the upper register. Tonally, this is right in the Taylor ballpark: a strong mid range and trebles section accompanied by a controlled but present bass section. This will undoubtedly make someone a great “go to” guitar for recording or playing out.
