2004 Santa Cruz PJ Indian/Cedar
Descriptive Text From Santa Cruz: “The PJ model is not designed as a miniature or travel guitar, despite its size. At one time there were many “parlor guitars,” but larger, louder instruments took center stage. The PJ incorporates contemporary design techniques, including optimized bracing and top construction so that the sound is exceptionally balanced. The sides and back are Indian rosewood, with a red cedar top. Don’t let its small size fool you–the PJ is truly a sophisticated guitar, perfect for intimate settings and recording.” We couldn’t agree more. This little guitar is very strong, loud and balanced with much more bass than you would think possible. This would be a perfect lean-over guitar, that’s one you can ‘lean over and grab’ all day long.

This is a unique Santa Cruz OM/PW in that it was custom made for Gryphon Guitars with some very old Red Cedar from legendary Luthier Frank Ford’s supply of this fine wood. This is a very lightweight OM that is deeply resonant and perfectly suited to fingerstyle music. The voice is very clear and sweet with a big, open Cedar voice. Many players mistakenly feel Cedar is not powerful, but that’s a myth and this guitar is proof. This one has tons of headroom and is downright loud. This is not only a unique but a very special Santa Cruz OM, the pre-war bracing and the rare Red Cedar make it so.

From the Santa Cruz Website: “With its player-driven design that has 13 frets clear of the body, plus special soundhole and bridge locations, Santa Cruz Guitar Company’s H 13 Fret joins the SCGC H lineup with a sweet tone that capitalizes upon the best attributes of a 12-fret’s resonance and a 14-fret’s access. As a result, it’s ideally suited to fingerpicking, coaxing the sonic character of each note while projecting an overall tonal depth. Despite its small appearance, the H 13 Fret employs a body depth approaching that of a much larger dreadnought-sized guitar, producing extra volume and bass support to bolster its rich tone. Its comfortable size and complex tonal characteristics make it especially appealing to traditional players, soloists, and recording artists who demand maximum warmth and tonal versatility.” We agree, this guitar is strong and has great character. It’s great fun to play as well and the Koa is stunning.

The RS is Santa Cruz’s version of the wonderful Gibson Roy Smeck 12 Fret Slope D with wide a fingerboard making it ideal for the player who wants to both flatpick and fingerpick. The bracing is extra stiff spruce that is double tapered so the guitar is extremely ‘alive’. This wants to jump off your lap. We love the vintage sunburst European top, it’s beautiful and powerful. This is a wonderful Mahogany dread that’s versatile and has modern stability and quality. It’s in excellent condition and includes an Ameritage humidity controlled case.

This is a very special Santa Cruz Dreadnought, a sweetheart 12 fretter made for the 2004 NAMM show as a Luthier Series custom and signed by Luthier Eric Poulsen (now an independent luthier) and Joseph K. It was originally owned by Nashville musician Dan Kelly. It is crafted from rich and powerful Cocobolo Rosewood and topped with Sitka Spruce for power and a rich tone. The 12 fret design puts the bridge in the sweet spot where it can shake the whole top efficiently. We find this one can go from bluegrass cannon to fingerstyle gem in a flash. This D has been played enough to be wide open and sounding alive. There is also a John Pearse armrest for comfort or it can be easily removed if you prefer.

Tony Rice is arguably the finest bluegrass picker the world has seen and for him to put his name on a guitar you know it’s special. The Tony Rice model from Santa Cruz Guitars is a powerhouse dreadnought design and this one really projects. The bass is huge and the trebles shoot across the room. The tone has a lot of character as well and like Tony it can handle multiple genres of music.

This one-of-a-kind guitar was commissioned by a collector fond of early Santa Cruz instruments. It features custom inlays by the now famous Larry Robinson, done completely by hand. The detail on the inlaid Butterflies is nothing short of amazing. Also featured is some of the nicest Brazilian you’ll find on any SC and Adirondack to top it off. The tone is strong, sweet reminiscent of prewar Martin small bodies. Warm bass and treble strings that are pure and fat.

This 2010 Prelude model from Kazuo Sato offers a smooth, even voice with lovely articulation across the registers; we’re smitten. Indian Rosewood back and sides paired up with Alpine Spruce on top (aged 20 years beforehand! making this a 30-year-old top today), Mahogany neck, and Alessi tuners for added elegance. This lovely number has opened up handsomely in the intervening years, and we’re excited to report it has a lively projection waiting just under the surface with a heavier attack. French Polish throughout, plus an under-four-pounds play weight, makes for an easy, responsive playing experience. We’re excited to see where the next 10 years takes this one!

Tim Scheerhorn‘s resonators are always a blast to play, but this custom build for lapsteel virtuoso Billy Cardine breaks the mold. Tight, responsive, and well-balanced–all made possible by Scheerhorn’s attention to detail and Cardine’s preference for a smaller body, 12-fret neck and all-Walnut construction. Further, this Scheerhorn features a removable lap rest, so you can keep the instrument horizontal even when standing, and the compact body weighs little compared to most other lapsteels. Its acoustic tone is solid, but when you plug an amp into this baby’s Lollar pickup, it can absolutely scream. Click here to see Billy Cardine’s slide virtuoso work. This guitar comes with the original Guardian hardshell case.

We are proud to have several dobros in the shop from the folks at National Reso-Phonic. Tim Scheerhorn semi-retired in 2010 to focus on only building custom dobros, and parent company National Reso-Phonic took over the construction of his production models–but that doesn’t mean that these Scheerhorns aren’t a force to be reckoned with! Here you’ll find many of Scheerhorn’s innovations to the reso-phonic world, from the mod D “L Model” bodies which create a more dynamic tone with enhanced low-end to his handspun resonator cones and parabolic baffle which helps project the rich tone. This is National’s Rob Ickes signature model, designed to the specifications of the famed dobro player and founding member of Blue Highway. As per his needs, this resonator has East Indian Rosewood back and sides and an Adirondack Spruce top, to bring a much woodier and warmer tone to the world of resonator guitars. The result is a lap steel that sounds more like its cousin, the upright resonator guitar, but retains the warbling sustain of a fine dobro.

Rod Schenk has made a strong name for himself building top quality guitars inspired by the work of Kevin Ryan, his friend and mentor. Rod has a unique approach to guitar making, employing in-depth computer analysis to determine optimal bracing size and layout to enhance the voicing and capture as much energy as possible. This guitar surely has a lot of energy getting transfered from the strings straight to the top. It’s very lively and spirited. It reminds us a lot of a Ryan Nightingale and very similar is size as well. The Brazilian Rosewood here is just gorgeous and paired beautifully with Engelmann for a lush and angelic voice. There are also many subtle but elegant appointments such as Blue Paua top trim and headstock trim, a Florentine cutaway, Gold Gotoh 510s and a 12th fret Floral inlay. Stunning to behold and to play.
