2007 Bashkin Placencia OM, Indian Ebony/Italian Spruce
From 2007, we have a Michael Bashkin Placencia OM with Indian ebony back and sides—yes, you read that right, ebony! This is truly a remarkable and unique guitar, featuring Italian spruce on top. It stands out for many reasons. Despite being from 2007, it’s in incredible condition and has opened up to extreme heights. The subtle multiscale of 25″ – 25.625″ is almost unnoticeable until you look at it while playing, offering great sustain and sonic fullness in altered tunings while feeling perfectly at home in standard tuning as well. With a full neck profile and natural aesthetics, this guitar has a lot to offer any player, regardless of experience or skill level. It could easily be someone’s forever guitar.

Such a delight to visit with this beauty. Michael Bashkin builds premium grade modern fingerstyle instruments, just like this 2017 SJ with Myrtlewood back and sides plus Italian Spruce on top.The voice is characterized by clarity, balance, and smoothness, equally at home in Standard tuning as it is in DADGAD and some C tunings (thanks to the 26-25.4″ multiscale fingerboard). Frets are dressed with semi-hemispherical fret ends, making for a very smooth playing experience under your fingertips. At the headstock you’ll find a delicate inlay scheme with micro purflings looping across the headplate veneer and between the Waverly tuners. All of this comes wrapped in a Hoffee flight case with an added layer of Thinsulate for maximum protection.

We’ve landed a powerhouse with this 2015 Placencia OM from Michael Bashkin in Cocobolo and German Spruce—from headstock to tailblock there’s miles of gorgeous real estate, and some rich tones hidden just beneath the surface. Bashkin paired his compass point rosette with amber side dots/position markers, and bound the body in elegant black Ebony for a subtle delineation between the creamy German Spruce and chocolate-rich Cocobolo.
Tonally, this Placencia has a crisp, focused bass response; tight and snappy, cuts well. Projection is impressive (and that’s not the soundport fooling our ears), and you can dig in a bit with a pick without topping out the sound. Try that on other OMs, we dare you. That said, this guitar is voiced primarily for fingerstyle, and we found it really slurped up dropped tunings. Built in 2015, this Bashkin looks nearly new: a great opportunity to get one for yourself to personalize with your own voice!

This multiscale Placencia from Michael Bashkin is to a fingerstylist what a dog is to a regular person: their best friend. Not only is Michael’s fit and finish flawless and his aesthetic elegant and contemporary, but his voicing techniques here yield an incredibly precise and responsive OM that can handle just about anything. 26 inches at the low E down to a standard 25.4 at the trebles gives the player the opportunity to dip down into C territory without swapping for heavier strings, and when you pair that with a slim neck profile and overall slinky setup you’re looking at an exquisitely easy player that offers up heaps of tone with even a delicate attack.
Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, German Spruce top, Florentine Cutaway, arm bevel, soundport—what more could you ask for? It’s guitars like this Bashkin Placencia that humble us, and push us as musicians to keep exploring the sonic possibilities of our field. And that’s about the highest praise we can offer for any guitar. Here’s an additional demo with Al Petteway: https://youtu.be/Oiv-m3x3JzU

Our latest Bashkin acquisition is a gorgeous, like new OM that comes to us from 2017. Still has that new guitar smell! Or maybe that’s just the Lucky Strike Redwood top. A black-silked Ziricote set makes up the back and sides, and there’s Michael’s lief headstock and Amber position markers that double as side dots to complete the picture.
Already the voice has the easy richness and projection of a much older guitar, and it has a smooth response across the fretboard. Appointed in Michael’s trademark style, the elegant headstock lief motif and compass-style rosette are a fitting complement to the guitar’s refined, crisp voice. The cherry on top that is a soundport completes the picture.

At the perfect intersection between form and function, that’s where you’ll find Michael Bashkin’s work. We recently snagged a like-new 2017 00 that’s got us grinning from ear to ear! Somehow Michael seems to be able to coax a few more ounces of richness out of such a small guitar than you’d think possible. Here he manages to voice Honduran Mahogany and Adirondack Spruce for maximum resonance and clarity with a delicate spray of overtones in the trebles. The bass response is crisp and cuts easily through the mix without enveloping the entire voice. Drop this 00 down into DADGAD or lower, and a new kind of creature emerges: articulate, resounding, full-sized.
Michael is one of the few luthiers working today whose voicing chops match his aesthetic execution: Bashkins are beautiful guitars. The 12-fret neck features Amber fret markers on the bass side (serving double duty as side dots and board markers), and you’ll find Michael’s “Compass Point” rosette below that in burl, and his braided “Leaf Vein” headstock above. Gossamer-smooth finish catches the light like a jewel, and Michael’s neck carve could teach a feather a thing or two about softness.
Even our guy that doesn’t like 00s was blown away! An incredible guitar, in every possible sense of the word.

One of the most knowledgeable luthiers when it comes to wood (after pursuing graduate studies at Colorado State Universtiy and post-graduate research at Duke University), Michael Bashkin combines the artist’s aesthetic with the scientist’s research methods to build instruments which sing both visually and acoustically. This 2005 Placencia OM is the perfect example: exquisite woods, flawless fit and finish, and a voice that rings like church bells.
The 14-fret neck has a slinky low setup that’s optimal for fingerstylists, and the 25.4″ scale length makes playing in altered tunings a breeze, with the bass strings maintaining a crisp attack even when tuned down to D or C. Bashkin’s take on the OM size is nothing if not comfortable: between the slightly wider nut (at 1 13/16″) and tight lower bout (at 15″), the player is afforded a playing experience which is characterized by unfatiguing right hand technique and easy action across the frets.
Bashkin’s eye for fine wood has netted him some lovely sets over the years, and this Placencia features no less than jaw-dropping beauty in its Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, German Spruce top, and Tasmanian Blackwood rosette. For the fingerstylist seeking a guitar with resounding bass notes and a delicately balanced voice, this 2005 Bashkin Placencia might just be your next favorite

We are continually impressed by the quality of work Michael Bashkin is producing. Every guitar we have played of his has had a clarity and evenness of tone that is extraordinary. Every string has something to say, but none of them compete with each other. This Placencia in East Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce is an absolute sweet heart to play – you could sit with it for hours and never become fatigued. We love having it here in the shop, but we know it will be happiest in a good new home!

Here is a wonderful custom Michael Bashkin Multiscale OM, Placencia. Crafted from absolutely stunning quilted Mahogany and Italian Spruce, this guitar is a eye-catcher. The side soundport, custom rosette and amber side markers that capture light, it’s got all the nice details you could want.
The voice is focused and dense. The trebles are full and round in attack. The bass is warm and full. This is not a strummer’s guitar, but fingerstylists will love the oboe like trebles. The multiscale is a subtle blend of 25″ and 25 1/2″ scales so it’s very accessible but will make drop D and DADGAD work as they should. The short treble scale makes for easy playability as well.

Michael Bashkin has made quiet a stir in recent years making a name for himself with his beautiful style, masterful craftsmanship and rich, resonant tone. This guitar is just stunning, there are many little details that might go unnoticed such as the aged Madagascar Rosewood, the quality of the top, it’s Master Grade German and sounds like it, the X-braced back that enhances the fullness, the doubled sides that empower projection, the use of hide glue for all braces and the carbon fiber reinforced neck insuring the stability of this beauty for years to come. We love the tone of this one, it’s very vibrant and the sound seems to rush out of the guitar, in a hurry to become music. If you are seeking a great OM with a bit more style and originality, this is for you.

Here is an amazing Bashkin with many upgrades and unusual figured Nara wood. Nara is Filipino Mahogany and it sounds as good as it looks. The list of options here is a long one, multiscale, cutaway, bound soundport, Nara, Amber markers, Amber pins, Koa buttoned Waverlys, Calton case and a K&K pickup. The really cool thing is that together these specs create a very subtle, practical guitar that really works. We love multiscale guitars, you won’t even feel the fan but the tension is so much more balanced across the strings. The Sitka top here is also very special and full of silky medullary rays and French Polished for ultimate tone.

We’ve known Michael for a number of years and spent quite a bit of time with him this past summer at several events. He’s a genuine person and his love of his craft is very evident. We are happy to have for you this beautiful Ebony GC. Two key features are the Adirondack top and the French Polish finish. The Adirondack top, with it’s even grain, offers plentiful power and headroom while the French Polish finish allows every ounce of tone to come through. The Ebony body makes for a smooth midrange and wonderful sustain. To top it off Michael appointed this one with figured Koa and a gorgeous rosette.
