2022 Maingard 000, Brazilian Rosewood/Italian Spruce
Brand new and already wide awake, this Maingard 000 is an absolute livewire. Classic Marc Maingard–quick and energetic, punchy, lots of push. This 000 has got heaps of headroom. Sporting some gorgeous and dramatically figured Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides and 22-year-old Italian Spruce on top, the explosiveness of the voice is hardly surprising. Add an arm bevel to the mix, and throw in a soundport for good measure, and you’re set for a skies-the-limit playing experience.

Another brand-new guitar from the bench of Marc Maingard! This is a GC 12-fret model with a cutaway, soundport, and arm bevel. The back and sides are crafted from Brazilian Rosewood, and the veneer for the headplate, backplate, rosette, and bridge are all made from the same piece of Brazilian Rosewood. The top features Spruce, complemented by many of Maingard’s signature design elements.
Medium-sized 12-fret guitars are rare, and this guitar makes a compelling argument for why they shouldn’t be. Easy on the eyes and ears, this instrument is loads of fun and a stunning example of how natural materials can do all the talking.

Brand new from Marc Maingard, we’re excited to offer this stunning 000 model crafted from Brazilian Rosewood and Spruce. True to Maingard’s signature style, it features an arm bevel, sound port, and a delightfully comfortable neck profile. Despite being fresh out of the workshop, it doesn’t have that typical ‘new guitar’ sound—it already feels well matured.
With Schertler tuners adding a modern touch, the headplate and rosette feature matching Brazilian Rosewood veneer, tying the design together beautifully. This guitar is an excellent example of modern aesthetics and voicing, all while letting the natural materials shine both sonically and visually. It comes safely wrapped in a Hiscox case. Don’t miss your chance to own this masterpiece!

Wide awake and firing on all cylinders! Check out this 2009 Maingard GC if you’re looking for a livewire flattop that’s got headroom for a heavier attack, and sensitivity for a gentler touch as well. The Alpine Spruce top and African Blackwood back and sides form a dynamo for great projection, added color in the mids and bass, and the overall quickness that we find in every guitar from Marc. The GC body is 16 inches across the lower bout, but with the addition of both an arm bevel and a rib bevel, plus slender soft V neck profile, this Maingard remains easy to play. For this, and all the other reasons above, you won’t be able to put it down for long.

This brand new Maingard Grand Concert is characterized by balance across the registers, good headroom for a heavier attack plus responsiveness for a lighter, and a sweet array of treble overtones. It’s also one of the first new builds we’ve recently landed from Marc! And we’re so excited to have him back in the shop. This beauty is dressed to the nines with a dark set of African Blackwood for the back and sides, 22-year-old Italian Spruce on top, and one of Marc’s geometric rosettes rendered in Ebony and Koa. Additional upgrades include a subtle Ryan-style arm bevel, rib bevel, and gold Schertler tuners to set off the Koa headplate.

Our 2017 Maingard OM has a smooth, enveloping voice that you usually only find in older, opened up guitars. Marc fit this one with a striking set of Brazilian Rosewood plucked as the pick of his dwindling supply of primo-grade Braz. That’s paired with one of the finest Italian Spruce tops Marc had, and a Venetian Cutaway, added both his arm and rib bevels to the mix, and capped it all with a 12-fret neck. Moving the bridge further down the top helps activate it for that extra oomph of richness, and the standard 25.4” long scale board keeps the bass crisp and responsive.
We found this Maingard to respond handsomely to a fingerstyle approach, especially in dropped tunings, and the setup is easy on the hands. If you let the trebles ring out, you’ll pick up a second wave of overtones that rise up once the initial attack decays—an asset when you want slower pieces to hang in the air. With a guitar like this, it’s easy to lose track of time.

Built in 2005 and played in since then! Wide awake and raring to go. Ready for this Maingard OM? You’d better be. Dramatically figured Brazilian Rosewood back and sides (a classic Maingard move) pairs with Italian Spruce on top, a 25.4” scale, and slim build weight of four pounds for a lightweight, responsive, agile fingerstyle machine. The OM proportions also hold up well under a flatpick, but we had the most fun taking this one into fingerstyle territory with dropped tunings—hardly surprising, given the responsiveness across the range with this Maingard. Soundhole is ringed in with a zigzag rosette and at the headstock we have gold Waverly tuners plus another spot of dramatic BRW with the headplate veneer.
All told, this 2005 Maingard OM is a well-oiled machine. We’d recommend this one to, frankly, anyone.Other keywords: south africa, lutherie, hiscox, brazilain, euro spruce, 195, fingerstyle

This one practically moves on its own. So much energy under the hood! We simply love how alive and vibrant Marc Maingard’s 000s are, and this one’s one of the most electric we’ve seen. Opening up since 2007, it’s fantastically awake and raring to go. Dramatically figured Brazilian Rosewood back and sides match up with a lovely, creamy European Spruce top, 12 fret neck join, and arm & rib bevels for creature comfort. Aesthetically, Marc’s distinctive headplate design is set off with custom tuners and the rosette pops in turquoise (echoed with similar purflings along the top, back, and heelcap).
The voice is quick, immediate, vigorous. The registers mix up nicely, with a crisp bottom end that feels like it’s leaping out of the soundhole. Playability is gossamer to boot, and the 12-fret neck makes the 25.4” scale feel extra easy in hand.
This Maingard is a powerhouse’s powerhouse, the guitar that a guitar would play if a guitar could play.Other keywords: south africa, lutherie, ooo, hiscox, brazilain, euro spruce, 251

Crossover guitars span a wide range, from nearly traditional classicals to very contemporary designs which borrow heavily from the steel string world. We’ve got a 2017 Crossover from Marc Maingard that errs on the side of the latter, with a C-shaped neck, radiused fretboard, Florentine Cutaway, arm and rib bevels, and a relatively slim nut (48.4mm). As such, this gorgeous Crossover is exceptionally easy to play, and the combination of Brazilian Rosewood and Italian Cedar makes for a warm, enveloping voice.
The body itself is slim, and with the cutaway and bevels this Maingard is refreshingly accessible to a variety of players. We’re talking about a guitar that weighs 4lbs soaking wet; rich and easy is the name of the game.

Here we have an astounding 2005 Maingard GC with some tremendous wood and lovely appointments. It was custom built for a friend of Marc Maingard’s family and is quite special. For starters, there is a stunning set of Brazilian Rosewood with beautiful color and just enough sapwood to add some drama to the back. The top is extremely silky European Spruce which brings its power and beauty to the voice.
It is replete with a cutaway and front and back bevels for ultimate comfort and playability. The rosette is a highly customized Abalone Triangles design that really sets off this guitar. Acoustically, this Grand Concert is explosive. Maingard’s voicing gives each string an incredible pop, so played fingerstyle or with flatpicks the guitar can fill an entire house, let alone a room. We’re not convinced that this guitar actually has a ceiling, so we’ll just have to keep playing it for a few more hours (or days) to find out.

Marc was born in Durban, South Africa, to French immigrant parents, and traces his family lineage to 1350. It is a legacy of craftsmen musicians, lute and viol makers to the French court. In his early years Marc received formal piano and violin training. Playing in the Natal Youth Philharmonic, he later took up the guitar and performed as a professional musician in South Africa and Europe. Unable to have his guitar repaired in the early 70’s forced Marc to attempt the work himself. “Voila.” He subsequently flourished as a repairman and for the last 45 years has devoted himself to guitar construction and restoration.
To further hone his skills, Marc apprenticed himself to a cabinet-maker, studying, among other things, marquetry and french polishing. This, combined with a year making violins and cellos, set the foundation for his developing talent. Whilst in the USA he worked with Santa Cruz guitar company making acoustic guitars and later with Jimmy d’Aquisto perfecting his jazz instruments. He also spent time with Martin, Gibson and Ovation and is now their sole authorized repair person in South Africa. For three years Marc performed in Spain and took the opportunity to refine his current line of Concert guitars. As he completes one guitar in four weeks, excluding varnish, they fall in the exceptional range.
Each instrument begun has been assigned the wishes of the client and carries this personality throughout the process. Marc is an old-world craftsman and each top is graduated and tuned by hand to give maximum resonance and sustain. Likewise it is voiced to assure that the balance and tone remain consistent or altered to accommodate the needs of the client.
It is the intent of Maingard Guitars to present the player a sophisticated instrument with well-developed, complex overtones and harmonics that will mature, inspire and challenge the guitarist throughout a lifetime.
