Manuel Contreras II has built a masterpiece in this Double Top (Doble Tapa) guitar. The ‘double top’ in this case actually refers to a layer of Cedar added to the back of the guitar which warms the reflections inside the body creating a truly magical voice. The notes on this Contreras are three dimensional each carrying weight and projection clearly. The Cocobolo Rosewood adds it’s rich, Brazilian-like character, while the Cedar top insure the dark, Spanish sound. We fell in love with this one immediately.

Don Wilson has been working in the shop of Wayne Henderson for some time. He builds just a few of his own guitars each year and this is the first we’ve seen. We are here to tell you it’s a fine guitar with serious tone and great vintage vibe. This is a D-18 with a beautiful Shaded Top, Fossil Ivory nut and saddle and sporting a set of gold Waverly tuners with Snakewood buttons. This Wilson guitar has plenty of headroom and likes to be hit hard. The wide grain spruce top rings clear and the mahogany insures great projection. This is a wonderful bluegrass guitar.

And now for something completely different! Paul Schmidt, musician, teacher, designer and author of The Art and Times of Steve Klein commissioned a one-of-a-kind instrument that started with a completed Steve Klein top from the 1990s and became much more…

Paul collaborated with Luthiers Steve Kaufman and Jason Harshbarger to build this wonderful Klein inspired Jumbo guitar.Rare Pink Ivory wood was chosen for the back and sides and layered with Rosewood for added projection. A Klein solid Rosewood neck was added for feel and sustain and a Klein L-45.7 Bridge as well. Inlay artist extraordinaire, Larry Robinson was enlisted to create the stunning inlay designs by German Art Nouveau artist Peter Behrens. The inlay has a real sense of movement and flow and is done completely in real silver! Inset into the headstock is a hand carved solid Ivory Moon Face by Ron Fromkin. The body was then completely bound in real Ivory and tuner buttons carved from the same. So in addition to Pink Ivory wood, there is real salvaged Ivory in abundance. Something very rare these days.

There is a plaque affixed to the back on the inside (next to an original Klein label) that has all of us that participated and a quote, along with the name of the guitar – Pink Ivory Moon – it’s engraved real ivory as well. The finish is an oil finish with a French polish top. To keep it safe there is an original Klein Calton Case as well. Truly a work of art and an incredible musical instrument capable of voices that only a Steve Klein voiced top could produce. Big bass, bright trebles and everything in between.

Paul Schmidt, musician, teacher, designer and author of The Art and Times of Steve Klein worked with Jason Harshbarger of Highland Strings to build this Klein inspired 12 string guitar.

It started with a Klein Spruce top, bridge and solid Brazilian Rosewood Neck. The body was bound in Holly wood which frames the Mahogany body beautifully. Paul enlisted inlay artist Larry Robinson to create a simple and artistic fretboad inlay in copper. Inset into the headstock is a fossil-like Fern carving. On the back is a bloodwood Asian character that stands for ‘awareness’, “something the world needs much more of” says Paul Schmidt.

To complete the project a hand-made wooden case was created featuring vintage latches and handle and a Jade Oroboros adorns the interior. Paul used this guitar with heavier strings tuned down to D. It has a loud and deep voice that remains beautiful at all times. Not harsh some some 12 strings can be. It plays very easily and the Rosewood neck feels amazing.

Here we have a virtually unplayed 2012 Olson SJ in his classic Indian Rosewood and Cedar combination. The particular top on this Small Jumbo has lovely striping to it that is really beautiful, but it also has a bit of a fuller treble voice than we usually see in an Olson. Melody notes come out round, lush and very compelling. The bone saddle may be adding some mojo as well, the LB6 pickup was removed for just that reason. This one comes with a now rare, Dream Guitars Calton Flight case in Van Deusen Blue as well. Elegant in every way.

This is one of the all time rarest vintage Martins, a prewar 1932 Martin OM-28. 1 of only 50 made that year and just 487 pre-war OM-28s ever made. This one, while not all original, has been nicely restored by Ken Fallon and is a very solid player with ‘Holy Grail’ tone. Super straight grain Brazilian Rosewood and tight grain Adirondack Spruce pair up for that classic, power and articulation the OM-28 is known for. This is an amazing recording guitar and would also be suitable for a touring instrument for any pro player. See the condition statement for details and rest assured this one is solid and ready to play!

The vintage 1993 Bourgeois Jumbo OM (JOM) fills a wonderful niche for players who demand a balanced voice, but want just a bit more bottom end and punch. This one has the patina of age on it’s top and it’s gorgeous voice. The Rosewood and Spruce body is very responsive and lively. Players with a light touch will be rewarded with plenty of tone but players who like to hit hard will be equally satisfied. This is a great example of Dana’s work from the early days when he was a one man shop.

The Grandson of the owner of this 1934 Martin 000-18 brought it to us in all original condition. It needed a little love so we enlisted Master Luthier Bill Tippin to bring it back to it’s glory. Bill truly loves to work on vintage gems, especially ones like this. We were able to keep it completely original but for a new bridge and thin sister plate added to the bridgeplate. See the condition statement for details.

As for the tone, this is a sweetheart! Powerful, dry, throaty, everything you want in a Prewar Mahogany/Adirondack Martin. It’s a featherweight and the notes just fill the room. The setup is perfect and it plays beautifully. Bill carefully rounded the bar fret ends for a great feel. This one has some patina and very cool wear, but it’s solid and ready for another 80+ years of music!

This is a custom Applegate FS model featuring stunning quarter sawn Cocobolo Rosewood and a Moonspruce top. Moonspruce is European Spruce harvested in a very old tradition where they fall the tree at the phase of the moon when the sap is down in trunk and roots. We’ve seen enough Moonspruce guitars to be big believers, it’s very special. DG owner Paul Heumiller plays Moonspruce on several of his guitars. But it doesn’t stop there, Brian Applegate also added a side soundport and a unique and elegant rosette of interlacing Abalone Diamond over Bocote wood.

Be sure to listen to the clip with headphone, you’ll want to enjoy the full and present melody notes this FS model produces. So lyrical and alive, like a human voice. A perfect fingerstyle guitar in a small body that is a joy to hold and behold.

Randy Lucas is well known as one of the go to builders that can make a Dreadnought that rivals the best prewar guitars. Flatpicker extraordinaire Kenny Smith even teamed up with Randy to create a limited Signature Series. This one here is Randy’s LD-28 Herringbone in dark Brazilian Rosewood and wide grained Adirondack Spruce. Braced like a 1930s Martin and adorned with Ivoroid Bindings and lovely torch on the headplate. The voice is big and open with strong trebles strings and big bass response. A flatpicker’s dream!

Tiger Myrtle and Cedar give this Schenk GK Concert Windwalker a very distinctive voice the key elements of which is clarity and separation. The treble strings are so strong and lyrical, your melodies command attention. Tiger Myrtle wood has a very natural, woody voice that blends with the Cedar’s warmth making for a sweet and lush envelope of sound. There is a Microbevel for comfort, a slim, fast neck and the Schenk extra stiff truss rod system that enhances sustain and insures perfect playability. There is also the built in ISD Tuner system that works beautiful. Small fiber optic lights embedded in the side of the fretboard make it a breeze to tune. A Myrtlewood Rosette and intentional omission of pearl give this guitar a natural beauty where the wood itself shines.

This is a Martin Tim O’Brien Signature Edition 00-18, #36 of 100 made. This wonderful limited run by Martin guitars features an Adirondack top that is supported with scalloped Adirondack braces & tone bars and a maple bridge plate. The thin bracing and the stiffness of the Adirondack spruce produces a clear bell-like tone with volume suitable for both fingerpicking and flatpicking.

The soundhole is adorned with a simple vintage style 18 rosette, however the center ring of black has been replaced by an elegantly thin strip of select abalone pearl . Another unique feature of the 00-18 Tim O’Brien is its 25.4″ scale length, which is typically reserved for Dreadnoughts and Orchestra Models. This feature will add to the power and volume of this specially designed instrument. If you are fond of small body Martins and want one with power and range, this is your Martin.

This Traditional OM, TOM-R from Huss & Dalton combines the tonal depth of Brazilian rosewood with the warmth and punch of Redwood for a guitar with brilliance and exceptional balance. This guitar lends itself perfectly to fingerstyle playing and would perform very well in a studio recording setting. Koa bindings and Snakewood buttons on gold Waverlys make a real stunning guitar.

John Buscarino is very well known for his Jazz Archtop guitars that range up into the $30k range. But over the years he’s made a number of fine solid body guitars as well. This one is his JUK model a Jazz Stratocaster style guitar. It features a solid Ash body with a 3 tone Sunburst, a pearloid pickguard that holds two Gold plated Gibson humbuckers. A cool feature is a mini toggle that splits the pickups making for a wide array of tonal possibilities. The rosewood board feels great and it plays beautifully. Gold locking tuners and gold Wilkinson tremelo make this one very classy looking Strat.

CFox guitars was a company created by Luthier Charles Fox. They produced a line of beautifully built but affordable guitars. This Sonoma model features solid Indian Rosewood with a Red Cedar top. Fully bound in ivoroid with red perfling lines from head to toe. It’s a sharp guitar and a great player. Would make a great gigging guitars as it’s setup with a Fishman pickup as well.

Here’s an exquisite Robert Ruck Concert guitar crafted in the year 2000. It features several of his innovative features including dual soundports and an elevated fingerboard. It is also a short scale, so at 640mm it is very easy to play. The sound chamber is Indian Rosewood and Red Cedar creating a voice that is at once warm and seductive and powerful and alive. Solid Silver Rodgers tuners offer the feel of precision when you tune this guitar. This one comes to us from a University Professor and it has a sound that comes only when years of great playing have vibrated through a fine instrument. This is as good as it gets.

Here we have a custom Breedlove SC-25 Limited Edition in Koa and Adirondack Spruce in immaculate condition, given that it was built in 1998. Nearly flawless, the Adirondack spruce top has had plenty of time to open up, so with little effort the player can coax sweet sounds from this medium-sized beauty. Clear, detailed bass and excellent balance make this a great player. Steve Henderson has shown tasteful restraint here in the cosmetics, opting for minimal binding/purfling treatments and a clean, unobtrusive abalone rosette. An excellent guitar at a player-friendly price.

Here we have one of the 91 limited edition Custom Mandolin Brothers Reissue 1939 Martin D-45s. Mandolin Bros. was the first to ask Martin to recreate the great sound of the prewar guitars by having them remade with scalloped braces, T-bar, V neck and all the wonderful 45 Style Appointments. This one is 1 of 5 ever made in Brazilian Rosewood making it extremely rare and collectible and the sound is huge! To have this recreated today by Martin would cost over $50,000. This one has been kept as new in the case so it’s completely mint and original.

This is a grand Lowden F-50C custom in highly figured Claro Walnut and topped with Red Cedar. The 50 series represents the Custom Shop at George Lowden guitars. So how does a custom shop Lowden sound…. like the best Lowden you’ve ever heard. This guitar is huge and warm, yet the Walnut keeps it articulate and punchy. This guitar is extremely satisfying played fingerstyle and melodies come to life, but it’s a great strummer also, full and warm with just enough push. If you want the best that Lowden Guitar can do, this is for you!

Here is a 1995 Tom Blackshear concert guitar crafted from Indian Rosewood and Spruce. It has the trademark clarity and power that Blackshear is known for.
