The first signature baritone of Paul Heumiller from Ken Jones of Mountain Song Guitars! Based on the specs of Paul’s original Mountain Song OD-J baritone, this beauty is dressed to the nines with fiery Padauk back and sides and Adirondack Spruce on top, and of course a multiscale setup of 28.5 to 27 inches for plenty of power and clarity across the range. Twin arm and rib bevels keep this big box comfortable in hand, and gold EVO frets insure it won’t need a fret job for a long time—unless of course it gets played all day every day like it deserves! Brand new, but already so expressive and articulate; there’s an organic, breathing quality to the voice that makes it clear this is a living thing in your hands.

We’re already very familiar with Wayne Henderson’s flattops—and we love them dearly. We’ve been fortunate enough to have seen a great number pass through our hands, but until today we’ve never seen what Wayne can do with a Bluegrass Banjo. This Mastertone-inspired wonder was built all the way back in 1975 with gold etched hardware, Maple resonator, and tight flamed Maple neck. This is #5 of only 19 banjos that Wayne has built to date, each unique, and this is one of only two with “Henderson” inlaid at the headstock. Long scale setup at 27” and 1 3/16” nut; a hefty 10lbs 13oz; broken in and opened up tone.

We put this one through its paces with our own Al Petteway here: https://youtu.be/fwCtqRJPdCI

We commissioned this build on behalf of one of our clients (give us a shout if you’d like a bespoke Matsuda of your own), who loved Michi’s Deconstruction aesthetics but wanted to take it in a new direction. Enter: the Double Neck Deconstruction. Two necks designed with two playing styles in mind, the bottom set up for plucking and strumming, the top for tapping. Additionally, the bottom neck features a custom cittern-style bridge, whereas the top neck is outfitted with a hinged string damper at the nut. The assembled body of the instrument is decoupled from the acoustic top to allow it to vibrate freely, and an array of pickups across the arrangement allow for a wide range of setups heading out to the amp.

We love, love, love this powerhouse 2021 G.6CA from Bryan Galloup. We picked out a fantastically straight-grained Brazilian Rosewood set for the back and sides, which was then paired with Italian Spruce for smoothness and sustain to match the power and dynamic response. A multiscale setup of 26 inches at the bass to 25 at the treble adds a touch of sweetness to the high-end as well. Moreover, this beauty has an arm bevel and a smoothly curving venetian cutaway for added creature comforts.

Style 4 from Gibson! Here’s an RB4 from 2002 that’s well preserved and ready for action. Walnut neck and resonator with nickel hardware, MOP position markers, 26 3/8” scale, and original hardshell Gibson case. Comes with railroad spikes and original tuners, weighing in around 12.5lbs, and trimmed out in tasteful ambered Ivoroid at the resonator and neck.

Rick Toone’s eyes and ears have guided his lutherie career in incredibly unique directions from day one. Here we’ve landed a fabulous example of that with a particular “remix” of his T2 model from 2014. The T2 Remix combines Tele-style curves with a sleek, modern aesthetic and hardware, here a partially chambered Swamp Ash body with a Toone & Townsend tuning system and custom DiMarzio pickups from Steve Blucher. The neck is CNC fabricated from anodized aircraft Aluminum, as are all of the other components designed by Toone. The headless design also has an ulterior motive–the headstock doubles as a bottle opener (Ah!). The multiscale setup of 24.625” to 25.625” mixes a crisp Strat bottom end with LP trebles for easy bends. Frets are stainless (of course). The Blucher/DiMarzio pickups are wired with a 5-way switch and Tone Styler (StellarTone) 10-position tone pot. You’ve got an ocean of tones to dive into here.

Our latest client commission for Dontcho Ivanov! A drop dread gorgeous OM with African Blackwood back and sides, Swiss Moonspruce top, and flawless fit and finish throughout. Dontcho’s finish work is superb, hands down, and his sense of line and curve makes for a sensuously proportioned instrument that’s glassy to the touch and effortless to play. Florentine cutaway for added fretboard access; upgraded gold Rodgers tuners; and an elegant, intricate mosaic rosette. We’re more than excited to work with Dontcho; his guitars are a joy every time.

We just love Max Spohn’s contemporary flair, his expressive voicing, and great eye for tonewood. Even more, we love collaborating with Max on custom builds for our clients like this bespoke 00 12-Fret. Lovely figuring across the Birdseye Maple back and sides (matching up with the headstock veneers); Swiss Moonspruce on top with an offset geometric rosette and Ebony bindings—plus a sweet cardinal inlaid at the heelcap. Brass Scheller tuners round it out.
The voice is a delight. Small body roundness to the trebles, and there’s a meaty midrange (much more than we usually find on smaller bodies) that really fills it out. Note definition is crisp and smooth, with great balance across the registers. In short, it’s a helluva lot of tone from a petite package. It’s headed to its eager new home now! Give us a shout when you’re ready to commission your own.

A custom client commission from our very own Leo Buendia always makes for a good day—and this OMC is makes for a good week, month, years to come. Premium Brazilian Rosewood back and sides with Swiss Moonspruce on top, painstakingly executed chip-carved rosette and endgraft, spalted position markers and Rodgers tuners. Such a work of functional art.

Dressed up for a night on the town! The custom shop folks at Larrivée Guitars are particularly known for their intricate inlay work, and our 1996 D-10 is a primo example of that level craftpersonship with an engraved jester inlaid at the headstock with at least five different kinds of shell. The attention to detail is incredible, and so finely executed. And of course only the king of tonewoods would do to match these inlays—a primo set of Brazilian Rosewood that’s chocolate-dark and the right mix of straight grain and dramatic figure. Sitka Spruce on top, Abalone trim in a 42-style package to set off the Rosewood bindings, and Ivoroid along the fretboard and for the heelcap for a touch of the traditional.

Stelling’s first Mahogany model, the Crusader, has been going strong since the 70s! This beauty comes to us from 2004 with a Tony Pass Lost Timbre rim with Stelling Wedge Fit flathead tone ring, nickel hardware, and Mahogany resonator. Long scale at around 26 1/2” for added power (see: sizzling trebles), and playing smooth as butter with an easy setup, and railroad spikes already installed.

A custom client commission that more than met the mark! Our latest build from Isaac Jang is a powerhouse Orchestra Model with Cocobolo back and sides, Italian Alpine Spruce top, and features a Manzer body wedge design plus Uchida-style Bendaway cutaway plus bevel. A lifetime guitar if ever we saw one. Ready to commission one of your own? Give us a shout!

Another client commission gone right! Our friend Kevin Kopp worked with us to pull off a custom RJ (Robert Johnson) model for one of our clients, and we couldn’t be more impressed by the results. Petite but curvaceous, with a voice to match. The voice is characterized by a roundness and warmth that quickly fires out of the soundhole; even balance across the registers for fingerpicking goodness. We picked out one of our personal sets of Brazilian Rosewood and sent it to Kevin for the build, which he paired with European Spruce on top and a period correct sunburst, Maple bindings, and Waverly tuners. The short scale, 24 3/4” fingerboard joins the body at the 12th fret, activating the top for added warmth and playability, and the medium-thick C neck profile feels instantly familiar and easy in hand.
Ready for a custom commission of your own? Give us a shout! We love working with our builders and our players to make something special.

Wow, and wow. We’re struck by this one from our friends at Preston Thompson Guitars—it’s a real force of nature. One of our clients commissioned this build with us, and we’ve had such a blast collaborating with him and the PKT team. The voice is immense, and balanced, with striking clarity and power in the trebles and a bottom end that is rich and palpable. Pairing up handsomely with an articulate and even midrange to boot. And this isn’t surprising, given what we’ve heard from other Shipwreck builds—Thompson’s supply of Shipwreck Brazilian Rosewood is growing thin, while their extant guitars are growing in popularity (and tone as they open up). Adirondack Spruce on top with a well-executed 42-Style trim package throughout, gold Waverly tuners, and a K&K Pure Mini pickup. This D-SBA-42 has it all, and we’re so excited to put in the hands of someone who we know will cherish it. Interested in a build of your own? Give us a shout! We love working with folx on custom projects big and small.

Here’s a custom client build that we wish we’d commissioned for ourselves to keep! We worked with Gage Halland to spec out this DC-H to handle a range of tunings (thanks, multiscale) with the same powerful attack and crisp definition (thanks, Wenge & Moonspruce). Twin arm and rib bevels for creature comfort, plus the ubiquitous florentine cutaway. Brand new, and already such a monster. The voice is wide, wide open.

Ah, the beauty of time. We love, love, love it when a Classical comes to us that’s had decades to open up—two here, and what an effect. Trebles are clear and powerful, pairing sweetly with a sonorous bass and warm mids. This 1999 Sakurai Kohno Professional R is in great shape, well preserved with Indian Rosewood and Spruce. 650mm scale and 50mm nut; medium thickness neck that feels familiar and comfortable in hand; at 3lbs 9oz it’s a featherweight player.

Beauty is in the details, and this Ocean Burl Fugue from Tyler Wells wins the award. Our last LHT Fugue model sold almost instantly, and this one was pre-purchased while it was being built! Flame Maple back and sides and Bearclaw Sitka Spruce on top, a 24.7-25.7″ multiscale setup, and a custom Parallelogram Kent Armstrong humbucker. An integrated soundport/soundhole gives this Fugue model an impressive acoustic flavor that is engrossing all on its own.

This Olson has an extra helping of articulation and expressiveness that makes it a handsome companion for a wide range of styles. Of course it’s excellent for fingerstyle, but it also holds up well under a flatpick. Great note separation across the registers, with a top end that’s got extra oomph and glassiness. This 2016 Olson SJ Cutaway comes with Jim’s dove inlays along the fingerboard, Indian Rosewood body with Cedar top, and an L.R. Baggs LB6 pickup. Ready for a vibrant, energetic IR/Cedar Olson? It’s only a strum away.

Well, well, well—this is a beauty to lose yourself in, time and time again. Some of us are struggling not to keep this one for ourselves! Here’s the skinny: a 2018 Bourgeois DS-DB Signature Slope Shoulder Dread with reserve grade Cocobolo back and sides, AT (Aged Tone) Adirondack Spruce top, Koa bindings, Waverly tuners with Snakewood buttons. Here’s the tone report: smooth and velvety, a balance of richness and power, equally at home for fingers as for picks. It’s a monster with 12 frets to the body and a 25.5” scale for added warmth. Dana Bourgeois and co, you’ve nailed it 100% with this DS-DB Signature model from 2018.

Beautiful from tuner to tail, an easy player with an easy projection and happy played soft or strong, a real gem. We’re such a fan of this 2002 D-45V. The 45-style Abalone treatment is executed fantastically here, with Grained Ivoroid bindings to offset the Indian Rosewood body and Sitka Spruce top, and snowflakes & diamonds along the fretboard. C.F. Martin in Abalone at the headstock. The Spruce top is forward shifted and scallop braced for added bass punch, and the neck is carved with a Modified V to match the prewar classics with a beefier in-hand feel.

Breedlove’s Oregon Concert model excels in a wide range of settings, and handles flatpicking as easily as fingers. Myrtlewood back and sides pair with Sitka Spruce on top for a particular mixture of warmth and clarity that we find compelling and distinct. Half satin neck feels slick and familiar in hand; gloss top lets the Sitka grain really pop; and this beauty is in like new condition! Comes with an L.R. Baggs Element pickup system and original Breedlove hardshell case.

35 years in, and Bob Taylor’s dream is alive and well. To celebrate their 35th anniversary in 2009, Taylor built a limited run of XXXV guitars. Here’s the cream of the already exclusive crop: the XXXV-GS-BZ in Brazilian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce. Gorgeous red sunburst set off with Abalone trim and rosette plus Ivoroid bindings and gold hardware. Taylor’s proprietary pickup system sounds exquisite of course, and faithfully translates the beauty, power, and articulation of this guitar’s acoustic voice. Hardly any marks, this one’s been well preserved and it’s ready for action!

A gorgeous OM-10 from Jean Larrivée’s custom shop that’s been very well cared-for—yes, please! This beauty comes to us from 2000 but is looking like a new guitar in spite of the 20 years’ worth of music passing through. Indian Rosewood back and sides with Spruce on top and upgraded with an intricate MOP-and-Abalone tree of life vine inlaid along the fretboard, dark Abalone top trim and rosette, and Rosewood bindings.

Early to mid ‘70s Ramirez guitars are coveted for their richness, clarity, and reliability, and we’ve landed a perfect example of that with this 1974 2A in Brazilian Rosewood and Cedar. What a beauty! The back set features some gorgeous and dramatic figure, and pairs up nicely with the Red Cedar top to a sharp-dressed player with tone to match. Setup and playability are smooth as silk, and we’re happy to give this one a clean bill of health with only a few light marks in spite of its decades of music making. The Spanish Cedar neck has the chunkier neck profile that we associate with Ramirez of this era, and feels great in hand. Comes wrapped up safe and sound in a Humicase Metro case.
