1995 Sand Nylon Mahogany/Spruce
An amazing Nylon guitar made by Kirk Sand is 1995. The Mahogany back and sides and Spruce top combine with the nylon strings to produce a tone that is complex yet full and vibrant, both unplugged and amplified. This guitar was custom ordered by George Simmons in 1995 and bears his name at the 19th fret. The abalone purfling on this instrument is amazing! Kirk says of these guitars: “I really had Chet in mind for this guitar. He was using the Gibson CE at the time, but was interested in something with less sustain in the bass and a lighter weight body. I Discovered by hollowing the body completely out, and putting a standard braced classic top on it was the answer. As soon as Chet played it, he ordered one.” And with that, we must mention that this guitar was signed on the front by none other than Chet Atkins himself, along with master fingerstylist Paul Yandell. Truly a world class instrument with unmatched tone and playability.

Here we have the Jose Feliciano model by Kirk Sand. The cutaway and narrower neck with a radiused fingerboard make this a versatile crossover guitar for any style of Nylon guitar. As you can imagine in a guitar who’s namesake is Jose Feliciano, you can drive this guitar hard. The spruce top stays with you offering plenty of headroom. The neck feel is fast and easy to play and there are 16 frets clear on the treble side. The dual source B-Band pickup sounds terrific and makes this a great stage guitar.

If you haven’t seen Richard Smith play live, you need to! I caught him Add the Station Inn in Nashville a few years back and he blew me away. its easy to see how his amazing playing influenced this Richard Smith model guitar from Kirk Sand. The deep cutaway allows full access up to the 17th fret and beyond, the RMC pickup system provides fully adjustable volume for each string making it perfect for on stage use. This one is crafted from beautiful straight grain rosewood and Engelman spruce. It has abalone fret markers as well as a abalone top border, Rosette and tie block. We also like the clever placement of small fret dots on the upper frets of the high string for reference while playing. The tone is pure and lively acoustically, and the amplified sound is natural and hasslefree. This is a superb performance instrument. Watch Richard Smith tear it up on his Kirk Sand guitar.

Australian luthier Ashley Sanders crafts an incredible guitar, hands down. This Classical is relatively new from 2018, but has an impressively opened up voice and responsiveness. Ziricote back and sides with a lattice braced Cedar top, Rubner deluxe tuners and Snakewood buttons—and this Australian-style Classical only weighs in at five pounds. The Ziricote back is slightly arched à la Greg Smallman, adding volume and power to the voice. 12-hole tieblock for increased break angle at the saddle, and Sanders added side dots at the 5th and 7th fret for creature comfort.

This 2010 Prelude model from Kazuo Sato offers a smooth, even voice with lovely articulation across the registers; we’re smitten. This lovely number has opened up handsomely in the intervening years, and we’re excited to report it has a lively projection waiting just under the surface with a heavier attack. This rare and boisterous Schneider boasts some of the most unique and innovative bracing ever seen in the guitar world: Kasha style bracing. Schneider’s Kasha bracing takes a step from the traditional, but the flying buttresses, chaotic bracing pattern and a little black magic bring about astounding results in this guitar. The Premium Grade Redwood top and back pair with ultra rigid Brazilian Rosewood sides to give this instrument a powerful, sustaining sound that projects with gusto. In voice, it is inspiring – the bass rolls out with ease, followed by full, strong mids and great, punching and sustaining trebles. It is equal parts professional instrument and masterwork objet d’art. One you simply won’t want to miss.

A piece of history from one of lutherie’s grandmasters: our 1981 Somogyi Concert Classical. Ervin began his career with nylon string instruments, which helps to explain how he’s able to get so much tone out of his steel strings, since he became acquainted with the extra sensitivities that go into building for nylon strings at en early stage. This beauty is rich and clear, having opened up handsomely for the past almost 40 years. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Spruce on top, and Ervin carved a full neck profile with well-rounded cheeks.
His trademark scalloped nut weighs in at 52.5mm with a 651mm scale to match. The Burl headstock veneer is another hallmark of Ervin’s style, and this Concert Classical features a bookmatched version that sets of Ervin’s crenellated headstock perfectly. This is an incredibly lightly built (3lbs 2oz) and responsive instrument from one of the industry’s finest makers, and we’re proud to offer it to you now.Other keywords: classical, classical music, luthier, responsive guitar, nylon-string, karura, marquetry, mosaic

In the world of high-end and innovative instrument builders, few names are as widely known or highly regarded as Ervin Somogyi‘s. This man has singelhandedly reinvented many aspects of the modern luthier’s trade, expanding the horizons of what is artistically and functionally possible. Somogyi’s landmark texts, The Responsive Guitar and Making the Responsive Guitar, represent decades of dedicated practice and study, and yet the impact of this immense body of knowledge on his guitars is organic, controlled, elegant. Take this Somogyi 2011 Classical “Carp,” for instance. The rosette and inlay that Somogyi carves are jaw-dropping: intricate, clean, and so perfectly installed they look like natural features of the Sitka Spruce top. Combine that with Somogyi‘s other trademarks—his peaked headstock, scalloped nut and bridge, his Ebony trim—and you find yourself holding a guitar which comfortably straddles the line between art and tool. Somogyi‘s eye has blessed this guitar with a set of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides which probably doesn’t have an equal: the rich, sumptuous color palette varies from creamy vanilla to rick chocolates and dusty grays. The tap tone of both the Brazilian Rosewood and the Sitka Spruce is cavernous, echoing, and drives home just how finely honed is Simogyi’s technique in voicing this guitar. Simply put, this is more than a guitar, but its not untouchable art, either. This is an instrument which, miraculously, is equally beautiful to listen to and watch. This guitar comes with a Hoffee hardshell case.

And such a lightweight build! This one comes in a little over three pounds soaking wet. Rodgers tuners at the headstock with MOP buttons; french polish finish throughout with an amazing clearness and luster only found from the finest french polishers; an intricate and flawlessly executed rosette to ring in the soundhole and pair up with the multiple purflings of the top bindings. Gary designed this model after Bream’s 1940 Hauser I which he used for much of his later career.

They don’t build ‘em like this anymore. Literally. Gary Southwell no longer builds with Brazilian Rosewood, and not only does this A Series boast one of the last sets of Brazilian he’s ever used, but it also features an exquisitely tight-grained German Spruce top given to Gary by none other than Julien Bream. This is Gary’s 250th guitar, built in 2008 and featuring the distinct headstock and Rodgers tuner arrangement of his A Series, as well as engraved bone appointments, an arm rest, and Florentine Cutaway.
The Maple neck has a slim profile that’s easy on the hands, and thanks to the cutaway and elevated fingerboard, all the frets are quickly beneath your fingertips. The bass response has an extra helping of clarity and definition to really let those bass notes stand out in the mix, without overpowering the other registers. Gary’s custom Rodgers tuners glide effortlessly, and the overall lightweight build (only 3lbs 12oz) and slim neck make for an exercise in easy playability. In short, this Southwell A Series excels on both fronts, ergonomic and tonal. And there won’t be any more quite like it from Gary.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, anniversary guitar, commemorative guitar, nylon string, classical music

Gary Southwell’s A Series cuts a fine figure in Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce with a voice that’s equal parts elegance and energy. Loaded with unique features, from the cantilevered neck and Smallman armrest to offset tuners and Florentine Cutaway, this A Series is a deliciously fresh take on the nylon string guitar.
Gary has only built a handful of Brazilian Rosewood A Series, so our #265 from 2010 is a rarity even among its brothers and sisters—and what gorgeous Rosewood it is! Rich, brick-red hues and a little bit of dramatic grain. The German Spruce top is satin finished for maximum resonance. The setup is delightfully smooth for allegro passages, and the combination of cutaway and cantilevered fretboard make for easy access to the entirety of the board. Powerful sonority in the bass response, and the mids have some added punch to make for lush and colorful arrangements.
Unfettered by convention, the Southwell A Series offers a timeless voice to contemporary music, and a vibrant flair to the traditional.
