2004 Traphagen Classical, Madagascar Rosewood/Cedar
We adore Dake Traphagen’s classicals. The man manages to coax voluminous bass response out of the same woods that offer clear and juicy trebles and an expressive midrange—this Classical from 2004 has all of that in spades. Fabulous Madagascar Rosewood back and sides paired with Cedar on top and an L.R. Baggs UST pickup with volume control in the soundhole, 650mm scale, and a completely opened up voice. This Traphagen has been played in extensively and has the marks to prove it, and is shipshape to keep on keepin’ on!

True strength under these strings. Dake Traphagen’s Double Tops have all the added power of a laminated top plate, but without losing any of the warmth, color, and dynamism of a standard top. This model, dubbed “Joya,” from 2013? Fantastically precise, powerful, and elegant. The back and sides are upgraded, heirloom grade 250-year-old Brazilian Rosewood, here paired with a Cedar double top. French polished for maximum resonance and weighing in about 3.5lbs, this Traphagen is a livewire Classical that is so easy to lose yourself in. 12-hole tieback looks gorgeous and complements the scalloped saddle and nut, plus Dake adorned the soundhole with a gorgeous Burl rosette, in lieu of a traditional mosaic. This is a world class Concert instrument that exudes inspiration. What more could you ask for?

It’s a beautiful thing when we get to see a loved guitar return to the fold: we originally offered this Traphagen Double Top in 2008 straight from Dake’s shop, and we’re excited to offer it here again in 2020! Palo Escrito back and sides paired with a double top combining Swiss Spruce and Cedar, this Classical has fierce, incredible power and projection. Warmth and overtones fill out the trebles in particular. Elsewhere, this beauty has a small soundport at the upper bout, elevated fingerboard, and Sloane tuners. It has opened up handsomely in the past 12 years, and it’s in fabulous shape to boot.

How to describe the experience of playing this 2015 BRS from Dake Traphagen? It’s something akin to that overwhelming sense of warmth and satisfaction after a delicious dinner with friends. The voice is replete with rich, flowing overtones and trebles that hang in the air like ripe fruits. Traphagen French Polished this Classical from tailblock to tuners to a mirror shine that really brings out the colors in the Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and European Spruce top. Gold Graff tuners operate like the well-oiled machines that they are, and the gentle contour of the D neck profile? Like running your fingers through your hair after a good brushing.
We’re quite impressed by Dake’s wood stash: this is prime real estate in the Brazilian Rosewood market, and the burled rosette and Rosewood bridge complement the dark and creamy Euro Spruce top.

Dake Traphagen is one of our very favorite American luthiers. He has the rare ability to pull immense amounts of tone from a guitar to create a powerful tool for your music. This Concert is crafted from exquisite Brazilian Rosewood dated back to 1727 which is paired with a vibrant European Spruce top. The treble strings are very strong with wonderful projection and colorful musicality; bass notes are round, warm, and enveloping, balanced with the other registers without overbearing.
The fit, finish, and setup are as superb as we’ve come to expect from any instrument of Traphagen’s–and with the addition of dual soundports in the upper bout, this dynamically-voiced guitar projects beautifully straight to the player’s ear.

We attended the GFA Convention (Guitar Foundation of America) recently and were lucky enough to bring back 2 instruments from famed maker Dake Traphagen. Dake’s guitars are among our most popular nylon strings, with his quality and tone it’s little wonder why players such as Scott Tennant and Pepe Romero own his guitars. This beautiful guitar is crafted from 35 year old Brazilian Rosewood and features a double top crafted of Swiss Spruce. It also sports two soundports, French Polish throughout, upgraded Graf tuners and an Eastman case. This guitar is amazing strong and articulate and much more warm and beautiful than some double tops. This is a series performance guitar and will make a lifelong partner for some lucky player.

We’ll let the builder Dake Traphagen tell you about this beauty: “This is the first of a total of ten that were made for this series. The next Anniversary series will be my 50th year of building, 2020, if I make it that long. The top is 150 year old cedar, the back and sides came from a salvaged beam that yielded only three sets and the beam was dated 1727!! Very cool, the neck wood came from another salvaged beam of Spanish cedar that was over 100 years old. The fret board is at least 25 years old. The finish is French Polish.” – Dake.

With high profile players like Scott Tennant and Pepe Romero we probably don’t need to tell you much about Dake Traphagen. But if you’ve not had the pleasure of playing a Traphagen guitar you’re missing out. From the first note you enjoy power, great bass response and strong, clear trebles that sing sweetly. This beautifully cared for Traphagen was built in 1994 and features an outstanding set of Brazilian Rosewood with just a touch of natural sapwood. The Spruce top has matured to a golden patina. Nylon-string players, you won’t want to miss out on an opportunity this sweet! We’ve got a 2007 Trinity Bent Top in the shop today, which could more accurately be called the Trifecta: the perfect combination of French Polished Western Red Cedar for warmth, Indian Rosewood for richness, and luthier innovations to make playability effortless.
Where many Classical guitars tend to lean towards a bass-heavy voice or one emphasizing only the upper register, the Trinity takes the best of both worlds and gives its player an exceptionally well-balanced voice. With string-to-string separation that borders on surgeon-precise, there’s little chance for even the subtlest techniques to go unnoticed, and the glass-smooth profile of the neck makes you forget there’s a neck at all! Tone aside, this Trinity Classical continues to impress with the combination of Jim Holler’s Bent Top construction, which improves upper fret access while not compromising the dimensions of the sound chamber, and his Player Response system, which adds a soundport to the upper bout to increase the midrange response of the guitar, and to increase the amount of tone which the player (at last!) is able to hear while they play. From Bossa Nova to Francisco Tarrega, Jazz to Bach, this Trinity will give you only the sweetest trebles and the most resounding bass notes.

This is a piece of history, and it sings so sweet. New York’s own Manuel Velazquez built many of the U.S.’s finest Classical guitars from the mid 1900s all the way into the 2000s, and we’ve come across a beautiful example of his work from 1966 with this Concert Classical. Dark, dark Brazilian Rosewood paired with an amber-tinged Spruce top and Rosewood bindings. 650mm scale, 54mm nut, and a lovely playability as confirmed by our repair staff as they inspected the instrument, giving it a clean bill of health. There are some player marks on the top and neck which attest to this Velazquez having been played in handsomely in the past almost 60 years, and it responds easily to a variety of attacks. The bass register is well defined with a warm center, and the trebles pair oh so sweetly.
