Crossover guitars span a wide range, from nearly traditional classicals to very contemporary designs which borrow heavily from the steel string world. We’ve got a 2017 Crossover from Marc Maingard that errs on the side of the latter, with a C-shaped neck, radiused fretboard, Florentine Cutaway, arm and rib bevels, and a relatively slim nut (48.4mm). As such, this gorgeous Crossover is exceptionally easy to play, and the combination of Brazilian Rosewood and Italian Cedar makes for a warm, enveloping voice.
The body itself is slim, and with the cutaway and bevels this Maingard is refreshingly accessible to a variety of players. We’re talking about a guitar that weighs 4lbs soaking wet; rich and easy is the name of the game.

A special treat if ever we saw one. Here we’ve landed a lovely Manzer Crossover from 2006 that’s opened up handsomely with Indian Rosewood and Cedar and is ready for more action. Crossovers are the perfect choice for the steel string player who wants to expand their tonal horizons and master a new kind of play feel with nylon strings, but with the creature comforts of a steel string guitar to make it easy to play and, frankly, more fun. Here of course Linda used her patented Manzer Wedge body design to tilt the guitar top up and back a touch towards the player, and added a cutaway for upper fret access. Then there’s a radiused fretboard and pickup + mic internal electronics. This one’s set up for just about every genre you throw at it.

Here we’ve landed a quite played in, and quite wide awake, Crossover Classical with cutaway from two powerhouse Australian luthiers SImon Marty and Robin Moyes in a rare collaboration for virtuoso Slava Grigoryan. Indian Rosewood body with Spruce top, 650mm scale, and the aforementioned cutaway for easy access to the topmost frets. The pickup system combines an L.R. Baggs Anthem SL with an additional internal microphone, and the result is incredible plugged in. This was Grigoryan’s touring guitar for a number of years, and it’s got the marks to prove it–and we’re happy to report that all that playtime has rendered the voice wide, wide open.

Even Michi Matsuda’s prototypes are incredible! We recently stumbled upon just such a gem with this 2008 Nylon String Prototype in Ziricote and Italian Spruce. A flattened Florentine cutaway swoops away from the fretboard, and many of the appointments are Wenge. The neck has a shallow C profile (an excellent play feel for crossover players), and the overall weight is only 4lbs 4oz.
What sets this guitar apart from the crowd (aside from its rich and vigorous tone) is Matsuda’s adjustable neck. Wedged in place with Wenge, the neck angle can be adjusted in both directions simply by driving the wedge further down, or backing it off away from the body. Every detail is executed with typical Matsuda prowess; perfection is never far off where this luthier is concerned.
We’re quite impressed by the tone. Dynamic response and an expansive bass response characterize the voice, and the clarity of each plucked note is something you need to experience firsthand to really grasp. A wealth of overtones flesh out the trebles, and the sustain is prolonged. One of the coolest nylon string guitars we’ve seen in some time, but what else would we expect from Michi Matsuda? It’s a winner in our books.
This Matsuda comes in a lightweight Super Light softshell case, and we have some excellent case upgrades as well; just ask!

There are a handful of builders who are as much artist as they are craftsman. Michi Matsuda is most certainly an artist and it has made his instruments highly sought after. He builds only a few instruments per year, and by looking at the details you can understand his low production. He spends a lot of time on every guitar making it both a tool for music and a delight to behold. This nylon string N.S. model is labeled a prototype, making it even more special. It features stunning work in Flamed European Maple with an Italian Spruce top and his bold external neck block design with adjustable neck angle. The voice is all Michi, sweet, clear and refreshing. We are honored to offer this fine and rare guitar. Click here to see another video of this guitar.

Paul McGill is a household name in Nashville’s session scene, and the reason is crossover masterpieces like this Super Ace from 2014. Figured Maple back and sides with Lutz Spruce on top, radiused fretboard and cutaway, plus Paul’s custom onboard preamp and Graphtech saddle pickup system—and that’s just the start. The setup is effortless on this beauty, and with a longer, 25 3/4” scale, the voice is crisp, expressive, and very energetic. Equally at home with a Classical repertoire, Jazz, Blues, or any other genre you want to throw it into. Additionally, there’s a soundport in the upper bout to give the player a little more “me in the monitor,” and a sloping venetian cutaway for unencumbered access to those uppermost frets. Cocobolo bindings throughout (as well as the bridge and headstock veneer) really set of the amber palette of the Maple and Lutz.

A Classical guitar with modern sensibilities: our 2005 McGill Picasso turns heads and tunes ears right out of the case. Gorgeous Cocobolo back and sides are here paired with a European Spruce top and Koa bindings and Paul’s dropped shoulder cutaway. The effect, when combined with the offset position markers, elliptical rosette, and open headstock, is to stand out from the nylon string crowd with an exciting flair. Elsewhere, McGill’s Picasso model offers some of the creature comforts of more progressively set up crossover guitars, like a slim 1.95” nut and cutaway, while maintaining the depth of response and color of a traditional classical guitar. The figured Cedar neck has a U-shaped profile that will feel instantly familiar, and Paul’s coaxed the setup into slinky territory for effortless playability.
Our McGill Picasso is the sort of Classical that’s not afraid to make a statement, and it backs it up with a rich and enveloping voice.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, nylon-string, crossover classical, classical music, nashville, fingerstyle

Paul McGill’s nylon string guitars are something to behold: where stylish contemporary aesthetic meets excellent craftsmanship and a dedication to powerhouse tone, both acoustic and amplified. The 2013 Super Ace we have here today is practically mint, and is as loud and expressive as a fresh pot of coffee in the morning. Paul gives us the perfect guitar for gigging in the form of his Super Ace, with it’s aggressive cutaway for two octaves’ access, and this is one of the first guitars to feature McGill’s new amplification system which combines Graph Tech individual saddle pickups with Paul’s custom preamp that he’s been designing for the past several years! By offering phase inversion for each string, Paul’s system helps minimize feedback and maximize a balanced, organic amplified voice. That means that all the rich, focused tonality of the Bearclaw Sitka Spruce top, and the well-defined low-end from Bubinga back and sides, translate faithfully into the Super Ace’s stage presence when amplified. Add to all of these acoustic advantages McGill’s sense of style with Snakewood bindings, fretboard, and bridge, and the smooth operation of the Baljak tuners in gold and Snakewood, and you’ve got a instrument which looks as good as it sounds. See below for a link to McGill’s website, where he explains his preamp in greater detail.

Luthier Paul Daniel McGill is known for his creative designs inside and out on his guitars. This guitar is dubbed the Picasso and it is certainly creative and unique like it’s namesake. The 7 fan bracing produces thunderous bass and soaring trebles with Paul’s trademark clarity throughout. The back & sides are rare and stunning African Black Wood with dramatic sapwood sections.
