2014 Sergei de Jonge Crossover, Ziricote/Cedar
Hands down, an incredible instrument. It’s obvious that Sergei de Jonge’s formidable luthier skills were brought to bear on an excellent set of Ziricote and Cedar for this Nylon Crossover. Treble notes drip with buttery goodness, the bass is velvety but crisp, and the string-to-string balance allows for complicated chord voicings to ring out in all their complexity. Sergei added a soundport to the upper bout bass, a Venetian Cutaway on the other side, introduced a gentle radius to the fretboard (with EVO frets), and carved the neck profile to a pleasing hybrid of the Classical U shape and a C.
The lattice-braced Cedar top is deliciously responsive, and with the addition of a Barbera pickup this beauty performs equally well amplified. Weighing in at a spry 3lbs 11oz, this Crossover is built to be played and played, and played some more. An instrument of this calibre: a challenge to ever set down.

Yes, please! And this beauty has a James May Ultra Tonic pickup with soundhole-mounted volume control—and this pickup sounds oh so incredible. Figured Maple body with Spruce on top.

Steve Fischer’s spin on the nylon string crossover dips its pen in the company ink of both flattops and classicals for exceptionally playability and responsiveness. Our 2015 Moderna is done up in European Maple and Engelmann Spruce, features a slight fretboard radius and cutaway as creature comforts, and is bound in Rosewood and purfling for an elegant presentation.
The Euro Maple body lends a hint of dryness to the upper mids and trebles that really helps them cut through the mix, while the bass retains a balance between warmth and clarity to round out the voice. The nut is wider than average for a steel string at 1 29/32”, but not as wide as a traditional classical—this means those complex chord shapes are that much easier to fret without added string buzzes from overlapping fingers. A trim punching weight of 3lb 8oz makes this a crossover guitar that’s difficult to put down, period.

From the Godin Website: The Multiac nylon SA (synth access) uses the RMC Polydrive system. This system not only produces superb amplified sound, but also produces a hexaphonic output through a 13-pin connector, which provides these guitars with direct access to Roland™ GR-Series synthesizers. The key to the exceptional synth tracking of the Multiac lies not just in the electronics but also in the carefully selected and balanced blend of different wood used in its design. All of the materials used are the result of extensive prototype testing to achieve the best possible combination of plugged-in guitar sound and synth tracking..

This is the first Goodall Crossover we’ve had in the shop and we are duly impressed. This guitar is strong with great projection and responsiveness. It’s very alive. The neck dimensions are narrower to appeal to player who move between nylon and steel string or those who simple prefer a slimmer feel. But there is still plenty of room between the strings to play cleanly and articulate. The construction is impeccable and the Palo Escrito and Cedar body looks stunning and sophisticated. We don’t know many luthiers who work harder to hone their craft than Michael Greenfield of Montreal, Quebec. We also don’t know many luthiers who are able to build nylon string guitars at the same level as their steels—again, Michael stands apart. Here we’ve got an agile and responsive 2010 Classical C2 with Flamed Maple back and sides, and a cream-white Alpine Spruce top. The elevated fingerboard and Florentine Cutaway come together for easy access all the way to those dusty upper frets (and Michael’s “swoosh” heelcap helps your left hand snug up a little closer for better access, too), and Michael’s trademark arm bevel keeps player comfort at a maximum.
The back is slightly arched, giving the body a little more air to breathe, and that really comes out in the crisp trebles. The Padauk 12-hole bridge in the Gilbert style combines a more efficient tie block with an attractive aesthetic. Gilbert tuners, 1 7/8” nut, 651mm scale, and 2 1/4” saddle spacing. This beauty is in superb condition, hardly a scratch to be found. The neck is slightly slimmer than your standard classical, making this guitar an easy player. To make the deal even more enticing, this Greenfield C2 has a K&K undersaddle FanTaStick installed as well for when it’s time to take to the stage. And all of this comes wrapped up in an Accord case that’s super light, and just as strong.

Blue purflings set off the amber colors of the top and Koa bindings, and add a bright spice to the overall aesthetic. Combined with an elliptical rosette of Koa, and this Grimes Nylon String Cutaway stands apart from the crowd in all the right ways.

The folks with Kenny Hill have been building crossover guitars for a number of years now, and a few years back they launched their custom Performance Crossover line—and they’ve never looked back. This particular example comes from 2016, is in great shape with Indian Rosewood back and sides, and boasts an impressive double top of layered Engelmann-Nomex-Red Cedar for projection and sustain. A short, 640mm scale and 1 7/8” nut make for easy playability, and the addition of twin soundports flanking the heel help the player keep in touch with their tone while performing. You’ll find the neck has more of a C-shaped profile than the traditional D of a Concert Classical, and it’s especially easy on the left hand. The overall weight is a slim 3lbs 8oz, and the radiuses fretboard helps make this Performance Crossover feel like a steel string guitar, but with the sensitivity and color of a nylon string instrument.

This is a very interesting internal chamber design from luthier Arik Kerman of Israel. It incorporates a floating back with small, light braces and smaller internal upper bout area, imagine a guitars inside a guitar. This gives a focused and powerful sound with excellent projection. The carved upper bout edges act as additional sound hole area. This Metamorphosis model is just that, it looks like a big guitar but has the strong, focus character of a small body guitar.
