1976 Kohno 20 Brazilian/Spruce
This incredible Kohno No. 20 features the classic combination of Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and Spruce top along with Masaru’s amazing craftsmanship on the neck. This combination yields a guitar with authentic, pristine classical tones and one of the most playable necks in the business. The nut width here is 50mm so it will appeal to the player seeking a slightly narrower neck. This Model 20 Kohno is a gem with a big voice, powerful bass and singing trebles. The label is not signed, but just listen to the recording, this is a great one.

A blast from the past which packs a wallop! Our 1964 No. 2 from Masaru Kono (later spelled Kohno) is a keen example of why we love well-preserved old guitars: the voice has opened up completely, and the projection is there in spades.
This Concert Classical is in great working shape considering its age; there’s only the usual play wear across the Indian Rosewood and Spruce typical for a five-decades-old guitar. The bass response is very lively and crisp, and pairs well with the sparkling trebles. Simply appointed, but voiced for articulation and clarity, this Kono No. 2 is a great deal for a vintage classical that’s ready to roll for many more years to come.

R.L. (Bob) Mattingly made fine classical instruments and was the owner of “The World of Strings”, a music store in Long Beach, CA. His career as a luthier began in the early ’60s and he was primarily self taught. In the early 70’s he visited many of the great builders in Spain, and even spent a couple of days in the shop with his hero Miguel Rodriguez. Mattingly built over 700 guitars before his untimely death in 1992.
This incredible 1968 Mattingly has tons of character and mojo. It is one of those instruments that you wish could talk. The playability is excellent. The Rosewood back and sides and Spruce top yield a tone that embodies decades of tradition–a round, robust sound with great mids. This very collectible and very musical Mattingly will be a treasure for some lucky player.

Armenian luthier Manouk Papazian, based in New York for much of his career, put together an impressive body of work, ranging from Classicals like this lovely piece to violins, cellos, and even lutes. The example we have today is a Brazilian Rosewood and Spruce Concert Classical from 1960 that’s opened up sweetly and only weighs just over four pounds. The trebles are characterized by a lively string energy and clarity, and really carry the voice well, pairing with a warm and responsive bottom end and articulate midrange. We’ve gone over it with our repair staff to give it a clean bill of health; it’s got some honest play wear, which reinforces our interpretation that it’s opened up a lot, and has a lovely setup to boot.

Here we have a fantastic Flamenco guitar from the legendary Ramirez guitars. Built from the classic Flamenco combination of Cypress and Spruce, this little baby is as light as a feather. Mariano Tezanos was the particular builder in the Ramirez shop responsible for the construction of this guitar. Tezanos was famed as being one of the best builder to ever work for Ramirez, and none other than Andre Segovia himself prized Tezanos for his work. The voice on this guitar is quick and powerful, with a great attack and airiness to the tone, a perfect Flamenco sound. Although it has sustained some damage in its life, it has been expertly repaired, and we feel that it only adds character and tone to this wonderful little Flamenco.

Lightness of build is very important for a Flamenco style guitar, this Ramirez is as light as a feather on a warm breeze, you almost have to tie it to your lap! Flamencos have to respond ultra quick with a fairly short decay time in order to sound un-muddied with the deluge of notes being played, the Ramirez does that perfectly.
