1998 Heritage Millenium Eagle Custom Flame Maple/Flamed Maple
Heritage was formed by several long time Gibson employees. They’ve taken the great tradition and updated it with modern ideas and designs. This Millenium Eagle is an amazing semi-hollowbody guitar. It combines the warm, breathy 335 style tone with solid body stability and feedback resistance. This one is beautifully crafted from Flamed Maple and appointed with a gold plated finger tailpiece, split block markers and an Eagle inlay give it style.

The folks with Kenny Hill have been building crossover guitars for a number of years now, and a few years back they launched their custom Performance Crossover line—and they’ve never looked back. This particular example comes from 2016, is in great shape with Indian Rosewood back and sides, and boasts an impressive double top of layered Engelmann-Nomex-Red Cedar for projection and sustain. A short, 640mm scale and 1 7/8” nut make for easy playability, and the addition of twin soundports flanking the heel help the player keep in touch with their tone while performing. You’ll find the neck has more of a C-shaped profile than the traditional D of a Concert Classical, and it’s especially easy on the left hand. The overall weight is a slim 3lbs 8oz, and the radiuses fretboard helps make this Performance Crossover feel like a steel string guitar, but with the sensitivity and color of a nylon string instrument.

Ignacio Fleta’s design features sturdier bracing of the top and back, and results in a powerful concert guitar. His guitars have been played by Andres Segovia, Alexandre Lagoya, Eduardo Falu, Alberto Ponce, and John Williams. This example from Kenny Hill’s shop is Brazilian Rosewood and European Spruce for added warmth and clarity. In addition it is French Polished and upgraded with Gotoh Rodgers-style tuning machines.
Kenny Hill’s take on the Fleta design scores a 10/10 for fit-n-finish, responsiveness, clarity, and easy playability. This 2004 Hill Fleta Signature comes with a mosaic-and-birds-foot rosette that contrasts greens and reds to the rich amber of the European Spruce top. We found that Kenny Hill’s Signature Fleta loves an aggressive attack; digging in, it just got louder and louder without topping out! We’re happy to report that this beauty has opened up handsomely since 2004, and it plays almost without effort.

The label on this 2006 Kenny Hill says it all: “Special.” From the gorgeous Indian Rosewood back and sides and Engelmann Spruce top to the dual soundports flanking the heel of the neck, this is not a classical to trifle with. The voice of this guitar is vigorous, vibrant, capable of great projection without any loss of fidelity when you really dig into the strings. If the power of the trebles is a standard test for the quality of a classical guitar, then this one passes with flying colors (the B string, in particular, has great body and energy). Not to be outdone, the low-end is warm and enveloping, and the dual soundports help to send that big bottom end right to your ears. For ease of play, Hill added an elevated fretboard and introduced a subtle taper across the body from the high E to the low E, tilting the top back slightly in favor of the player’s chest, to enable easier fretting while standing. This is definitely a gigging nylon string–between the B-Band pickup, body taper, and strap buttons, the Special is ready to be played in any position, for any piece, sounding like a guitar that has opened up after 40 years, and not just nine. Moreover, this is the first Signature Standup model that Kenny played in 2006! A bit of history you can play seated or standing. Below is a link to Hill’s website, where he explains the innovations of his Standup model and this guitar in particular.

To our ears, this Kenneth Hill sings with a contemporary American voice. The bass range is clear and articulate and the mids are slightly more pronounced than on some instruments in its class. Its spruce top responds vigorously when projection is needed, yet it is capable of balance, nuance, and sensitivity. Its double top gives this instrument surprising volume, with particularly fat upper mids and trebles. Playability is first rate.

Darren built this wonderful SJ from rich Koa and Redwood. It’s tone is rich and lush with the buttery redwood voice. The SJ body makes it loud and full sounding and we love the curves. The Koa adds good punch and clarity as well. During construction one hairline crack appeared in the back, which he of course fixed, so Darren is allowing us to offering this guitar at a reduced price, but still with full warranty. Don’t pass up this chance for a great guitar under $2000.
