New Hoffman 00 Bubinga/Englemann
We marvel at how much tone this little beauty has. Charles’ experience allows him to draw every ounce of tone, volume and projection out of his guitars. This one, in the most beautifully figured Bubinga we’ve ever seen, has clarity to spare and superb balance from string to string. The Englemann top adds warmth and fullness and the Madagascar bindings and Koa top purfling add elegance in natural wood. This is one to keep close at hand and savor and enjoy on a daily basis.

Charles Hoffman has been making wonderful instruments for over 30 years. You can see the experience when you hold this guitar, every detail is cleanly executed. This Jumbo features a shallow body for a big, but controlled sound. This slimmer body, short scale and B-Band pickup, makes this a great gigging guitar. The setup is superb allowing for a very low action all the way up the neck.

This is the Custom Jazzica archtop guitar from Hofner Guitars of Germany. It features a unique body design that tapers 2 inches from the tail to the neck joint giving it a full body sound but remaining easy to hold. The 16″ lower bout and solid Engelmann Spruce top give it a wonderful response and it sounds great plugged in or acoustically. This is a very cool model from Germany’s top maker of electric guitars, Hofner.

Our first resonator from C.F. Holcomb takes center stage (and our hearts) from the very first lick to the final ringing chord. There’s so much going on with this cut-above-the-reso, where to begin? How about Christopher’s novel use of “The Tree” Mahogany for a resonator body? We’ve seen Koa sets not a quarter as gorgeous, and somewhere Holcomb uncovered a slice of Cocobolo big enough for a one-piece neck—a standing ovation for his taste in woods.
Add to that a spider cone bridge with bone saddles, Lollar P90 (oh, yes indeed), Gotoh tuners, and a gorgeous headstock plate bearing Holcomb’s John Hancock. But let’s talk tone. This Holcomb Kodiak boasts a voice that is, truly, greater than the sum of its parts (and what fine parts they are): rich and colorful reso tone with the spider bridge, a fiery brand of warmth to light up the bass, and whip-crack trebles that soar when you give the Lollar some juice. National, eat your heart out. Please note, this Holcomb comes with a weeks’ supply of paper towels to catch any accidental tears of joy (also works for excess saliva).

We love collaborating with our builders on custom builds—this latest 2019 Kodiak from C.F. Holcomb knocks it out the park. After our last Kodiak sold (the one with The Tree: https://www.dreamguitars.com/shop/brand-new-c-f-holcomb-kodiak-the-tree-mahogany-k16025.html), we immediately commissioned another one, this time in highly figured Quilted Mahogany. One-piece Cocobolo neck, Lollar P90 neck pickup, single cone resonator with antique bronze cover and tailpiece. Played in Open G or D, this Holcomb is an absolute joy. Putting it through its paces in Standard for some flatpicked fiddle tunes? A blast. The setup is slinky and quick, and that pairs nicely with the sweet, enveloping voice. This Kodiak weighs only a little over six pounds, pretty light by resonator standards, and that translates to a instrument that’s easy to keep cruising on for extended periods of time.

If you’re looking for a Jazz box ideal for gigging, the Holst 16″ Archtop is definitely worth considering. With a smaller-than-average Maple body, this Holst has all the warmth and round tonality of a full-size Jazz box, but the more compact and comfortable feel of a semi-hollow body. Amped up with an ES-175 Humbucker pickup perfect for fingerstyle, this guitar really lets those 6 and 13 chords ring in all their complexity–and the wider neck with 1 13/16″ nut makes fingering complicated shapes that much easier. The voice is warm and expressive, with lots of drive. Trebles silky smooth; basses clean and articulate. If you’re looking for the big, round sound for fingerstyle Jazz in a more manageable package, try this Holst 16″ Archtop on for size. This guitar also comes with an extra bridge and saddle, and a TKL hardshell case.

Ken Hooper’s been blowing up the scene for a few years now, and we’re exited to have landed this lovely 28-Style from 2013 that’s opened up handsomely in the intervening years. Honduran Rosewood back and sides pair up with Carpathian Spruce on top, and the resulting tone blends sweet warmth at the bottom end, a lively midrange, and focused trebles to cut through the mix and project outward. 28-style Herringbone trim on top, plus tortoise-style pickguard, rounds out the image of a modern traditional Dreadnought that’s raring to go!

All things are possible with time. And the past forty years have treated this guitar well, indeed. This is German luthier Dieter Hopf’s top-of-the-line Solistengitarre Gran Concierto model from 1981, with rich Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and a Red Cedar top to match. 660mm scale, fabulous condition overall with only a few marks, and this neck has a full, well-curved profile. The voice is colored by the added warmth of Cedar, and the middle register helps fill it out with a nice touch of woody clarity. The Hopf family has been building instruments for over 300 years, and they’ve mastered their craft over the years: this 1981 Gran Concierto from Dieter is in excellent condition, and it’s more than ready to keep on making music.

This is a wonderful vintage style small body guitar from John How. It is modeled after the old Oscar Schmidt guitars. The Mahogany body and X-Braced Mahogany top offer up a wonderful bark, this guitar is punchy with a perfect sound for Blues, rags and Old-Time music. John always adds wonderful details like the mustache bridge and his lovely shaded finish for vintage charm.

What first attracted us to John How’s guitars were his small body designs reminiscent of the beautiful parlor guitars of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This Concert model is actually a Parlor sized guitar dressed beautifully in a dark wine sunburst with a vintage style mustache bridge, full bindings on the body, neck and slotted headstock. But it’s character is more than skin deep, this ladder braced beauty has a wonderfully balanced voice with just a hint of that throaty growl that Mahogany is famous for. This How guitar would be perfect for Blues, Rags, Old Time or that best friend guitar you keep close at hand all day long. As a bonus it’s also small enough to travel with and you’ll want to take it a long with you…

This is another beauty that we discovered at the Healdsburg Guitar Festival. Like the ladder braced guitar we recently had, this one has vintage styling but crafted here from Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce and X-Braced for more of that classic prewar tone. John How’s Grand Concert is sized like a 000 guitar. We love the simple styling, the blank ebony headstock bound in Ivoroid to match the neck and body, the pyramid bridge and rope style trim. All classic details appropriate for a guitar with a voice that is clear and strong with snappy bass and powerful focus. This is a superb guitar for blues, rags, traditional music and much more.
