2003 Klein M43 Cutaway East Indian/Spruce
A guitar from luthier Steve Klein is an experience unlike any other. An instrument like this 2003 Klein M43 has stepped outside the land of traditional construction, and explores a new (and curvaceous) realm of possibility. Accordingly, the bass response has a depth and scope to it which speaks in clear, articulate sentences about what a low E string can sound like, if given the opportunity. Folks, Klein has most certainly given this guitar the opportunity, both to express itself with an enormous, enveloping voice and to maintain a focused, precise tone. Trebles which sing confidently, accompanied by subtle shimmering overtones, and a middle register perfectly attuned to the overall balance of the voice–these features help establish this guitar’s incredibly complex, defined tone. For such a large instrument, it’s effortless to play, thanks in no small part to Klein’s delicately thicknessed Spruce top, East Indian Rosewood back and sides, and lightweight bracing system. More than capable, this M43 is an opportunity to explore new textures and plumb new acoustic depths–and the Highlander IP-2 Pickup and Internal Mic allows those explorations to spill into electric territory with amplification that’s 100% faithful to the M43‘s acoustic range.

In this shop full of strange and wonderful guitars, a regular ole Klein guitar would fit right in. But this? The Deco? Instead, one of the five large-bodied guitars that Steve Kleincollaborated with Steve Kauffman and Paul Schmidt to create? No, this calibre of unique stands alone, even in a room of Symogyis, Matsudas, Walkers, and Olsons. These guitars are living legends, both in terms of their collectibility and the ferociousness of their voice. Klein’s guitars look almost as different as they sound, and that’s not a bad thing: the voice that booms out of this wide Brazilian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce soundbox is enveloping, loud, gorgeously articulate, with mids full of richness and a low end that sneaks up on your ear, until you find your head absolutely teeming with its huge, expansive voice–and all without the aid of a soundport in the upper bout! The custom made tuners (from David Rogers), integral Pearl nut, and Pearl-and-Abalone rosette which crouches on the bottom of the Ebony fretboard, when combined with Klein’s trademark asymetrical bridge and extra-wide lower bout, reveals a guitar which strikes as fresh and exciting a figure as its energetic and polyphonous voice. This guitar comes with a custom Calton Flightcase.

Having a Steve Klein guitar in the shop is always a treat, and this M-43 is no exception. This monster is still young (having been brought to life only in 1997), but has a voice which seems to come from another place, another era altogether. Thanks to the 16 3/4″ lower bout, this larger-than-life guitar has a low-end which is cavernous and resounding, and yet is paired with trebles that are instantly responsive and crisp as bells. Despite its voluptuous dimensions, the M-43 feels natural in your lap, and is effortless to play–one of but several reasons why Joni Mitchell, Michael Hedges, Steve Miller, Andy Summers, and Sting prefer to play Kleins!
With Indian Rosewood back and sides and a Sitka Spruce top (both Master Grade), you can rest assured that the voice has herculean strength. The top is drum-thin and has a tap tone which resonates wildly. Klein achieves this degree of thinnness with his progressive bracing techniques, which manifest in an arching ply baffle in the M-43 which connects the soundhole to the sides and helps project sound outward. Bundled with a Calton Flight Case and a Highlander IP-1 pickup, this M-43 is the complete package: fingerpicked or strummed, acoustic or amplified, at home or on the road, this guitar delivers the goods.

And now for something completely different! Paul Schmidt, musician, teacher, designer and author of The Art and Times of Steve Klein commissioned a one-of-a-kind instrument that started with a completed Steve Klein top from the 1990s and became much more…
Paul collaborated with Luthiers Steve Kaufman and Jason Harshbarger to build this wonderful Klein inspired Jumbo guitar.Rare Pink Ivory wood was chosen for the back and sides and layered with Rosewood for added projection. A Klein solid Rosewood neck was added for feel and sustain and a Klein L-45.7 Bridge as well. Inlay artist extraordinaire, Larry Robinson was enlisted to create the stunning inlay designs by German Art Nouveau artist Peter Behrens. The inlay has a real sense of movement and flow and is done completely in real silver! Inset into the headstock is a hand carved solid Ivory Moon Face by Ron Fromkin. The body was then completely bound in real Ivory and tuner buttons carved from the same. So in addition to Pink Ivory wood, there is real salvaged Ivory in abundance. Something very rare these days.
There is a plaque affixed to the back on the inside (next to an original Klein label) that has all of us that participated and a quote, along with the name of the guitar – Pink Ivory Moon – it’s engraved real ivory as well. The finish is an oil finish with a French polish top. To keep it safe there is an original Klein Calton Case as well. Truly a work of art and an incredible musical instrument capable of voices that only a Steve Klein voiced top could produce. Big bass, bright trebles and everything in between.

Paul Schmidt, musician, teacher, designer and author of The Art and Times of Steve Klein worked with Jason Harshbarger of Highland Strings to build this Klein inspired 12 string guitar.
It started with a Klein Spruce top, bridge and solid Brazilian Rosewood Neck. The body was bound in Holly wood which frames the Mahogany body beautifully. Paul enlisted inlay artist Larry Robinson to create a simple and artistic fretboad inlay in copper. Inset into the headstock is a fossil-like Fern carving. On the back is a bloodwood Asian character that stands for ‘awareness’, “something the world needs much more of” says Paul Schmidt.
To complete the project a hand-made wooden case was created featuring vintage latches and handle and a Jade Oroboros adorns the interior. Paul used this guitar with heavier strings tuned down to D. It has a loud and deep voice that remains beautiful at all times. Not harsh some some 12 strings can be. It plays very easily and the Rosewood neck feels amazing.

This Klein M.43 is a like a full band in a box, the voice is complex and huge. Not big and boomy, but big, clear and beautiful. The M.43 body is 16 3/4″ at the lower bout but it’s easy to hold sitting or standing. Klein necks always play tremendously well, it’s easy to fret anywhere on the neck and intonation is superb. Micheal Hedges’ symbol adorns the 12th fret of the board as well. This one is Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce, both are Master Grade and exquisite and it comes through in the voice of this rare preowned Steve Klein M.43.

Dan Koentopp is a tried and true craftsperson, from what we can tell by the quality of this 2015 Chicagoan oval hole archtop. A delicate and exacting touch brings together a hand-carved Romanian Maple back with a matching Carpathian Spruce top bound in rich red Macassar Ebony and outfitted with a cello-style tailpiece and Macassar Ebony pickguard. A full 17 inches across the lower bout with three inch body depth around; five pounds on the nose, and a slinky smooth setup. The voice is characterized by a warm, round quality that permeates the bass, miss, and trebles—and translates faithfully when amplified with the Barbera bridge pickup (volume knob under the guard). Waverly tuners help keep build weight down, and Dan appointed this Chicagoan with Pearl skyscrapers on the headplate and a corresponding Pearl inlay on the backplate reminiscent of an “espresso art” tulip.
From tuners to tail, this 2015 Chicagoan from Don Koentopp is a work of functional art. We can’t think of higher praise than that.Other keywords: arched top, arch top, fingerstyle jazz, handcarved, cutaway, ebany, hoffee

Masaru Kohno was widely regarded as one of the finest builders of concert Classicals, and our experience with his work will definitely reinforce that reputation. This particular Classical is a 1973 vintage, with Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and a tight-grained Cedar top, and has one of the sweetest, most opened-up voices we’ve heard in a Classical in some time–thanks in no small part to the 660mm long scale setup!
The tone is balanced, with bass notes that are rich and articulate, and the setup is glass smooth and easy on the hands. This #15 model Kohno responds beautifully to both a light touch to a more aggressive attack, and provides consistent projection even with the subltest adagio. The bass notes exude a dry tone that allows them to cut through the mix, complementing the warmth of the middle register. This Kohno has seen many years of great music, and it’s got many more years still to come.
