2023 Taran Oreval, African Blackwood/Italian Spruce
This was our first from Rory Dowling of Taran Guitars! What a first it is, this large body fingerstyle beast is comprised of Master Grade African Blackwood and Master Grade Italian Spruce. Where to begin with this guitar? Each note is rich, powerful and clear. This is a rare instance in which a guitar is so obviously powerful and delicate to the player. There is a sweetness and profound epic quality to this instrument. Like something out of an Arthurian tale, or some beast epic. This guitar is a symphonic masterpiece. Sonic qualities aside, this instrument as a thing of beauty. From the pureness of fit and finish, to the hidden appointments. Just take a peek inside and see for yourself.

A first for us here at Dream Guitars—this is a 2018 Tim Frick Oriole 16″ Archtop, and it’s an absolute stunner. Built with Sitka Spruce over Bigleaf Maple, this hand-carved Jazz box is light, alive, and resonant in a way that immediately grabs your attention. Tim’s work is known for its elegance, and this Oriole delivers in every detail.
From the Lollar Johnny Smith-style humbucker to the beveled soundport, this guitar is full of thoughtful design choices that elevate both tone and experience. The subtle burst finish brings out the natural beauty of the woods—especially the figure in the Maple—and the overall visual aesthetic is one of quiet sophistication.
Unplugged, it’s articulate and sweet, with a dry, woody tone perfect for intimate sessions. Plugged in, it opens up into something truly otherworldly—rich, expressive, and endlessly musical.
This is a builder to watch and a guitar that speaks volumes about where modern archtop lutherie is headed.

Just when you think you’ve seen and heard it all, along comes a guitar with the perfect combination of breathtaking visuals and a rapturous voice: our 2017 Al Petteway Crescendo from Bill Tippin. Dream’s own Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, paired with a Swiss Moonspruce top, Abalone trim to bind the top, rosette, fretboard, and center seam; flamed Koa arm bevel, rosette ring, and inlaid just below the nut at the first fret; French Polish on top, Nitrocellulose everywhere else; Bill’s signature soundport in the upper bout. This is a guitar that’s difficult to turn away from.
Tonally, the balance is equal parts bass, treble, and mids, with an overtone swell in the upper middle register to crank up the lushness and color. This is practically a brand new guitar, but it has the kind of cool, rolling bass notes and crisp trebles that you’d expect to find, instead, on a weather-worn and broken-in guitar from decades past. We shudder to think what this piece of beauty will sound like in the next few years. It’s a natural choice for open tunings like DADGAD, but the 25 1/2 inch scale and 14-fret neck also lets you drop down into C territory without compromising play feel.
It’s quality and style like this that make Bill Tippin one of our all-time favorite luthiers. This is a treasure you’ll want to keep close.

In 2010, fingerstyle phenom El McMeen and Bill Tippin collaborated on a signature model that took BIll’s Bravado body and tweaked it for additional playability, and paired that with Brazilian Rosewood & European Moonspruce for maximum resonance and response. As always, Bill more than succeeded. El McMeen Signature #1 operates like a well-oiled machine with its wedge-shaped body and upper bout soundport, chock full of smooth trebles and a liquid, rolling bass register that envelopes rather than booms. The 25.5” scale keeps the guitar crisp and responsive when dropped down to DADGAD and beyond; plenty of bite to be had when you dig in a bit. The aesthetics are understated elegance, with a Mother-of-Pearl motif in the trim and rosette, and at the top of the fretboard.
El’s put this Tippin through years of use, and it’s time to pass the torch! It’s in great playing shape, and is ready to keep the tunes going. Here’s an additional demo with our own Billy Presnell: https://youtu.be/-sRyVdj58Jo.

The sweets of time, good wood, and a master’s touch. This Traugott BK comes to us from 1998 and has opened up handsomely, the result of which is a set of Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce that are responsive to a T and built with a wide dynamic range for a variety of attacks and styles. Jeff’s BK body is a generous 16 inches across the lower bout, adding power and bass response to his trademark well-balanced sound. The Brazilian Rosewood is really something else: rich red hues throughout, very straight-grained and quarter sawn–and such a tightly grained German Spruce top! Jeff’s wood game has always been a cut above the rest, and this 1998 BK is proof of that.

A first for us here at the shop from Zach Lefebvre, a brand new TreeHouse Blue Ember. It’s rare to find such unique instruments, where form certainly follows function so well. A whole lot of tone, and even more character. The back and sides’ hue harkens back to custom Stratocasters of the late 50s and early 60s, with an incredibly visually pleasing stain on top. The single coil tone combined with its acoustic resonance makes for an intriguing and fantastic musical experience. Maple for the back and sides, Adirondack Spruce on top.
