Brand New Indian Hill/Michael Kennedy GC, Tamarindo/Lutz Spruce
Our latest Indian Hill GC comes with a few creature comforts to set it apart—and a gorgeously balanced and expressive voice to match. Figured Tamarindo back and sides pair up with Lutz Spruce on top, plus venetian cutaway for playability (and micro beveled bindings throughout for smooth contact with your body), and a soundport at the upper bout for a little extra “me in the monitor.” The satin neck feels effortless in-hand, and the GC body is big enough to handle a wide range of attacks with aplomb. Michael Kennedy also built this beauty with a wooden tornavoz inside the soundhole, which to our ears enhances the bass response and gives the voice a lovely touch of darkness and color in the mids.

Michael Kennedy of Indian Hill Guitars has pulled off a mean feat: this Concert model is vocal, articulate, and sweetly balanced. All wrapped in a gorgeous package with Black Limba back and sides and Lutz Spruce on top, soundport, and a tornavoz installed in the soundhole. The voice really is so, so crisp and well defined; it’s an excellent fingerstyle instrument in Standard as well as DADGAD and other more arcane tunings. The neck is finished in satin for a silk-smooth play feel. The body bindings are delightfully rounded for a comfortable instrument-body connection. Really, from tuner to tail this Indian Hill is a bombshell.

Definition, power, and playability—we don’t know how Michael Kennedy builds such energetic guitars, but we’re sure glad he does. This is our latest Indian Hill Grand Concert in Mahogany and Engelmann Spruce, with a few extra features under the hood. Namely, a small upper bout soyndport to keep the player in the know, and the installation of a tornavoz around the inside of the soundhole.
This GC is a particularly lively and loud guitar, exhibiting all the woody, dry characteristics of Mahogany that make for a quick and responsive instrument. Played with either flatpicks or fingertips, this Indian Hill is immensely fun; it’s easy to lose track of time. The back and sides and neck are finished in satin, and your left hand slides oh so smoothly along the neck. It’s really one of those guitars that practically plays itself. The pinless bridge makes for quick string changes and eliminates the risk of launching a bridge pin off the top and into your audience—set off with spalted appointments here and the rosette.

We haven’t had an Indian Hill from Michael Kennedy for some time, and there’s definitely been a gap in our inventory as a result. That’s why it’s such a pleasure to reconnect with such a powerhouse as this brand new Indian Hill Concert in Mahogany and Torrefied Sitka Spruce. Mike installed a wooden tornavoz to the soundhole, lowering the resonant pitch of the guitar and giving it an incredible amount of energy in the voice. You can easily tap into it with even a gentle attack, but this Concert also loves an aggressive right hand.
The bass response is crisp and focused, and you better watch out for those trebles! They’ll bite! They’re very energetic and expressive, and we love how they seem to fire right out of the soundhole. There’s a small soundport in the upper bout to give you a little more “me in the monitor,” and Mike finished the back, sides, and neck in satin to keep weight down (and make the neck so swift in your left hand).
If you want a balance of power and clarity, in a very comfortable package, our Indian Hill Concert will do nicely. Very nicely indeed.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, fingerstyle, mahagony, baked sitka, baked wood, baked spruce, torrefied spruce, tornavos, hog, mahog

We consider ourselves lucky when an Indian Hill guitar comes to our shop. Michael Kennedy‘s craftmanship is superb, and his aesthetic tastes are unquestionably sound. This Grand Concert Prototype was made in 2012 and has some juicy features to set it apart. For starters, Kennedy has included a soundport in the upper bout of the Indian Rosewood sides to provide the musician with instantaneous feedback from their playing, and the Sitka Spruce top is bound in Indian Rosewood which has a slight bevel to it, making the entire body of the guitar smooth to the touch and comfortable to play. The inlay on the Ebony bridge is stunning, as is the custom rosette–Kennedy‘s appointments are perfectly mated to the color palette of the Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood. This guitar practically plays itself. The action is perfect, and the guitar holds up well in dropped tunings, maintaining its great articulation even in DADGAD or C# tuning. Kennedy also added one of his trademark options, an elevated neck, which serves two purposes, 1) increasing the pulling tension of the strings on the bridge, which translates into a more efficient energy transmission and a more powerful sound, and 2) allowing the player to reach higher frets without the use of a cutaway. Lastly, as with all Indian Hill guitars, this Grand Concert Prototype has a traditional French polish, or varnish, which yields a thinner finish to let the tonewoods vibrate more freely and creates one of the smoothest surfaces in the world of lutherie.

We first began working with Michael Kennedy, the luthier behind Indian Hill Guitars, back in the infancy of his company’s name. Michael apprenticed to renowned Canadian luthier Sergei De Jonge, and has gone on to do increasingly impressive work. This latest piece is one that we espied and tried at the Memphis Acoustic Guitar Festival and absolutely had to have in the shop. And when we brought it back to record, it was Al Petteway’s pick of the day–even when pitted against more than ten other Dream Guitars we had him play. This Grand Concert pairs the warm, open tone of Western Red Cedar with the dry, reflective voice of Claro Walnut. In Michael’s hands, these two woods have truly become more than the sum of their parts. This is an instrument that plays effortlessly. It will interpret and sing and dance along with your slightest movements, sounding ample and satisfying and whole. The soundport really puts the player directly into the sound–which means you hear every shimmering, nuanced note that you play. It handles altered tunings like a champion, thanks to its slight Multiscale design with 25.39″ on the trebles and 26″ on the bass, but the 0.6″ difference is so slight that you never even notice it as you’re playing. Add to that a Macassar Ebony arm bevel for added player comfort, an elevated neck, and soundport, and you’ve got a guitar with every option available. This is the kind of guitar that, once picked up, simply won’t be put back down for a long, long time.

Every once in a while a unique instrument is put in our hands that is pure fun! This Indian Hill Tenor guitar has us grinning from ear to ear. Tenor guitars have been around for a long time, but became less popular when the 6 string spread across the world. But with a short scale, light strings and a it’s powerful bell-like voice the Tenor guitar offers a lot of color to the modern guitarists. It’s very easy to play and can be tuned several ways from it’s typical CGDA to ‘Octave Mano tuning’-GDAE to ‘guitar tuning’-DGBE. This Maple/Sitka body from Michael Kennedy at Indian Hill Guitars has power and energy like a banjo, the sound shoots out and rings and rings. Add a new color to your arsenal, your group and your music. Like we said pure fun!

Here we have an excellent archtop guitar in Redwood and Walnut from builder, Michael Lewis. It’s obvious this one’s been played, judging by the openness of the voice. It’s remarkable how sweet this instrument sounds played acoustically, but when plugged-in, the true beauty of it’s voice, as well as the quality of the Bartolini pickup, really shines through. Sweet, fat, and mellow are all apt descriptors, and surely this guitar has seen many a late-night jazz club jam session. Additionally, the satin-finished walnut neck feels superb in-hand.

And now for a slice of something different, modern, and sustainable. Joel Michaud of Michaud Made has teamed up with the producers of Rocklite for a new material they’re calling Sundari Rocklite, or synthetic Indian Rosewood. The result is a more sustainable use of Rosewood for guitars that also has the added benefit of being extra stable. On top Joel used Swiss Spruce, and the two combine for a sweetly balanced tone that adds a touch of roundness in the trebles. Gorgeous Robson tuners at the headstock, and between the posts you’ll find a unique oxidized metal inlay that echoes Joel’s über cool metal rosette. We simply love the use of oxidized metal here; it adds a splash of dramatic color and very much sets it apart from the Abalone crowds. Being a 00 body, this Michaud is very comfortable in hand and play effortlessly, helped by a florentine cutaway, elevated fingerboard, and upper bout soundport. Built in 2019 and looking the part!

Balance and elegance are the first two words that come to mind with this guitar in hand. Joel Michaud’s sense of line, curve—and most importantly, tone—come together in this 2015 00-R in a way that many builders aim for, but few achieve. The woods are top shelf: The Tree Mahogany back and sides, Swiss Spruce on top—and Joel crafted a rosette that’s sunk into the top for a distinct touch. Next to that is a tapered fretboard extension that offers the elusive 24th fret to the fearless musician who needs to go so high. A sharp Florentine Cutaway and Scheller tuners round out the image.
The tone is smooth and easy, balanced from bass to treble, and this Michaud is set up for effortless playability. The smaller body dimensions, combined with a short 25” scale, make for warm, round trebles, and we love how Joel manages to keep the guitar’s response so even along the fretboard. This Michaud is a collector grade piece, and we’re honored to offer it to you.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, guitarbuilding, michaud guitars, oo, quilted mahogany
