A thing of beauty is a Monteleone. We are fortunate to have acquired an exquisite sample of John’s masterwork that’s been kept in excellent condition since its birth in 1998: a Radio Flyer in flamed Red Maple and Adirondack Spruce. 17 inches across the lower bout, 3 inches deep at the sides, gently radiused back and sides, African Ebony tailpiece, bridge, and pickguard, 1 13/16” nut—the dressings of archtop royalty. Bound in Red Maple, and with a Red Maple neck, this Monteleone reminds us just how beautiful flamed Maple can be, and John hand-rubbed Nitrocellulose finish has adopted a honey amber patina to bring the Adirondack and Maple together.
In spite of a generous lower bout, this archtop is built light and airy, and its voice lines up accordingly. We were delighted to find trebles which absolutely sang, and meshed smoothly with an overall middle register emphasis that lent the tone an simultaneously crisp and woody flavor. John describes the sound of individual notes on an archtop as articulate bubbles, and we find the description fitting: there’s a well-defined pop that separates each note and keeps solos ringing and chords clear. With a gentle fingerstyle touch, the Radio Flyer could purr; dig in with a pick to accentuate an agile, airy response. A colorful splash of treble overtones bloom when played softly, keeping the voice clean and lively even when quiet.
In short, this is one of the finest archtop guitars we’ve ever laid hands or eyes on. It’s an honor to offer a piece of functional art of this calibre from John Monteleone.

Just when we thought our Classical selection was complete, we stumbled across this gem! A 2005 Bouchet model from modern master Antonio Marin Montero himself. Complete with Brazilian Rosewood and European Spruce, this Classical can offer you sparkling trebles and resounding depth across the lower registers. The last Bouchet we had in the shop from Montero was superb; this one is just as jaw-dropping. With a ligthweight build that feels weightless in your lap, this Classical has a silk-smooth setup for effortless playing, and provides haunting overtones across the upper register, and with sustain as prolonged as this guitar can produce, the air around you swimming with rich notes.
One of the foremost Classical builders working today, Montero is known for his craftsmanship, and for the difficulty one experiences in trying to acquire one of his guitars for themselves, so we would recommend laying your hands on this one before it disappears; Classicals of this calibre don’t wait around collecting dust.

This 2006 Bouchet model from the father of the Granada school of builders, Antonio Marin, is richer than King Midas and sweeter than ambrosia. Featuring a fabulous set of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides and Spruce top, this Bouchet model is beautiful to both the eye and the ear–and both your left and right hands, as the setup on this Classical is glass-smooth and effortless to play.
We found the trebles to be energetic and vibrant, with a quick response that had notes leaping off the fretboard. When played in the upper registers, the treble strings are round, complex, and projective. By comparison, the bass strings are rich but with a pronounced clarity that fills out the voice and balances the lively trebles. Finding a Marin is difficult enough, but finding one with such evenness of tone and depth of voice is even harder; this one won’t linger long in the shop.

Dark and moody, with an absorbing richness and umber fundamental, this Bouchet has a voice at once entoxicating and envigorating. To play this Classical is to engage in an almost spiritual experience. Montero has somehow achieved the impossible: he’s built a new instrument which already sounds as though lifetimes have passed through its Caviuna back and sides, its Spruce top, Cedar neck, nylon strings, Rubner tuners, Ebony fretboard. There are no soft notes across the fretboard, just as there is no attenuation in the trebles–they sing clearly from the nut to the soundhole. We cannot stress enough how hauntingly beautiful this Bouchet model sings. Here’s a sweet piece of California lutherie that’s opened up handsomely: the 2010 Moonstone 000-42 in Cocobolo and Adirondack. We love the excellent balance across the registers, and the velvet richness of the midrange especially which helps fill out the voice. Playability is buttery with a 24 3/4” scale, and in spite of the short scale we were able to tune this one down without loss of clarity and projection. Indeed, this Moonstone took to DADGAD like it was born in the tuning. The Cocobolo back and sides have dramatic figuring, while the Adirondack top has tight grain and is set off by 42-style Abalone trim. A slim build weight at 4.5lbs, in a 000 package, makes for a comfortable playing experience. 10/10 would recommend.
