Robinson Grand Auditorium Brazilian/German
Jake Robinson is an independent luthier who build his guitars to high standards. He believes, as we do, that when a single set of hands makes every part of a guitar the results are consistent and you get the best quality and tone. This Grand Auditorium from Jake Robinson is spectacular. It reminds us of the some of our other favorite luthiers such as Kathy Wingert, Kevin Ryan and Ervin Somogyi but Jake has his own voice. It’s alive and energetic with sound that seems to swell as is it dances off the German Spruce top that is chock full of medullary rays. The dark chocolate Brazilian Rosewood pushes from behind with sweet midrange and clarity reminiscent of a North Carolina sky. The quality of the setup and fretwork is terrific and makes this one a real joy to play as well.

We are excited to be partnering with the Ukulele Kids Club Inc., along with four outstanding luthiers: Steve Grimes, Jay Lichty, Peter Robson, and Ben Wilborn, as the platform that will sell four one-of-a-kind guitars to help bring the healing power of music to medically fragile children. It is our honor to support the efforts of these altruistic luthiers who have chosen to donate these fine instruments to benefit so many children in need. All partners and luthiers are proud to share that 100% of the proceeds from the sale will benefit the Ukulele Kids Club Inc.
The OM body does it all, and Peter Robson’s OM more than meets the challenge! This midsize flattop handles a range of attacks and styles very well indeed, with some added depth and presence in the lower mids that’s very lovely when tuned down to DADGAD. As with all four LFAC guitars, the body is Flame Maple with Sitka Spruce on top, supplied by Steve Grimes.

This one comes to us from flatpicker extraordinaire Steve Kaufman, as you can tell by his trademark camp bear logo at the 12th fret. This shortscale Rockbridge 000 evokes an earlier era, one where guitars were a little less pristine and fussy and a little more workmanlike. It’s funky and fun and begging to be played with gusto. The gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood gives it a wonderful resonance, and the cedar rounds it out very nicely. For those who appreciate a more broken-in vibe…
New Thomas Rodriguez 20th Anniversary Classical Brazilian/Sitka
Thomas Rodriguez has been in the business long enough to recognize great opportunities to acquire unique materials when they arise. Twenty years later and he’s amassed a collection of impressive woods, ivories, and pearl–the perfect treasure house from which to build his 20th Anniversary Guitar. The sheer historicity of this guitar’s constituent parts is staggering: woods range from 40-year-old Sitka Spruce to 1800s Brazilian Rosewood salvaged from an old tabletop, or 1800s Honduran Mahogany for the neck from an old four-post bed. Right down to the braces, Sitka harvested from a 1925 Cable piano, or the Ivory tieblock on the bridge (formerly a key from an 1860s square piano), or even the position marker on the fingerboard which Thomas fashioned out of the Mother-Of-Pearl from an 1850s Martin bridge pin encased in a thin Nitrocellulose Lacquer finish.
The voice of this guitar is at once elegant and exciting, with a mesmerizing clarity that’s colored by a sweet bouquet of overtones from the treble strings. Each string sings like a guitar unto itself, and there’s an almost meditational quality to the smoothness of the voice and the glassy play feel. Just breathing on the strings can excite sustain for days. The bass register appears to defy geometry: how can so much depth come from a regular-sized guitar? Exploring those depths is akin to deep sea diving, while the profound richness is warm and enveloping like blankets of heat from a fireplace whose fire has subsided into the quiet intensity of yellow-red embers.
This is one of Rodriguez’s crowning achievements as a luthier.

Here at Dream Guitars we love guitars with a history of their own, and history is exactly what you’ll find in this brand new Thomas Rodriguez concert. This guitar pulls you in with the allure of a beautiful split-billet Cedar top and its striking three-piece Brazilian Rosewood back and sides (The rosewood being fifty plus year old, from the very same batch as his 100th guitar). The neck is Honduras mahogany from the early 60’s, purchased from an estate, and the nut, saddle, side dots, and tie block are all of fossilized walrus ivory. Tom’s signature asymmetrical lattice bracing gives the hand-split Cedar top’s voice a round, open clarity, allowing every note to be heard distinctly from those surrounding it. The boisterous bass and sweet trebles balance fantastically and we’re excited to offer this guitar we’re sure you’ll play and enjoy for many years to come.

We are delighted to present to our customers the worldclass guitars of Thomas Rodriguez. What better way to announce his arrival then to offer you his 100th Concert guitar crafted completely from woods that are at least 40 years old, all hand split by the builder. The quality of the aged woods and the unique top bracing, which incorporates fan braces with lateral braces, give this instrument one of the strongest, most musical voices you’ll find. It will certainly fill a hall and do so with sweet, lyrical notes that dance upon the ears. The combination of power and tone reminds us of other fine luthiers such as Tacchi, Fischer and Ruck. From the builder: The woods used in the 100th guitar are as follows; The top is 80 to 100 year old western red cedar from an exterior column from an old house here in Richmond. The back, sides, peg head veneer, bridge and fingerboard are 50 plus year old brazilian rosewood. All cut from the same tree to assure a good color match. The rosette binding and purflings are made up of maple and mahogany from a 1930’s piano. The dark lines are old brazilian rosewood. The mahogany in the back strip is from the 1840’s salvaged from an old house in Richmond. The neck, back braces and heel block are mahogany from the early 60’s all from the same billet. The top braces are from a billet cut down by a friend at the source in 1970. The linings are basswood salvaged from a hair salon opened in the 1950’s. The nut, saddle neck dot and tie block are 30,000 year old mastodon ivory purchased from the Duke of Pearl. The pearl inlays on the bridge are ground down from an old pearl belt that came from Bora Bora during WWII. In putting the guitar together I took the time to hand split all of the wood for the top, neck and braces. This assures the straightest an stiffest grain in critical areas. – Thomas Rodriguez

Maybe it’s the two decades’ worth of opening up, or the thin French Polish gloss, perhaps the flattened C profile neck or German Spruce top—whatever it is, this 20th Anniversary LP from Ron Pinkham is an intensely resonant guitar. This beautiful example of French Polished Brazilian Rosewood is excellent for the fingerstylist who plays across the spectrum of altered tunings, but it holds up handsomely to a flatpack as well. Just pluck the open strings and let this baby ring. Now that’s sustain!
The trebles have a potent powder coat of overtones that really dress up the upper register and fill in the rest of the voice with some sparkling colors. Ron reverses the body taper with his LP model, making the upper bout deeper than the lower, which helps accentuate the balance and response. Visually, this Pinkham doesn’t slouch. There’s some gasp-inducing figure across the Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, mosaic rosette with Classical flair, and intricately carved headstock. The neck profile is what you’d get if you married a Classical D shape with a typical C profile: the cheeks are shallow but delicately curved (and quite comfortable on the left hand). Pretty, and with a purpose most resonant, the 1996 Pinkham 20th Anniversary LP is the powerhouse all-around excellent guitar you’ve been looking for.

German luthier Jochen Röthel wields his chisels like a chef his knives, coaxing a work of functional art that charms the senses with a myriad of flavors and textures, tones. This 2020 Classical is a feast most sumptuous. Gorgeous Cocobolo back and sides with rich reds and dramatic figure pairs with Red Cedar on top, Ebony bindings, and a mosaic rosette of diamonds in Rosewood. Gold Scheller tuners (also of Germany) add a touch of elegance to the headstock; otherwise Röthel leaves the woods to speak for themselves. And what a voice they wield. The trebles have an immediacy and power that draws the ear in, without overpowering the bass or mids. The bottom end is deliciously warm and adds a richness and presence in which we lost track of time each time we sat down to play. Delicious, indeed.

Our latest Röthel Concert Classical is quick, lively, and a joy to play. This one is still new to the world (built only last year in 2018), and we’re impressed by how much projection and energy it already possesses. CSA Rosewood back and sides with gorgeous chocolate hues, Cedar on top, and a smoothly contoured neck profile that feels full and familiar in the hand. The build quality is fantastic, Jochen makes sure his guitars are as light as possible (this beauty is just over 3lbs!), and that translates into vibrant tone and easy playability. 1971 David Rubio Concert Classical, Brazilian Rosewood/Spruce
It’s such a pleasure to have a Concert Classical that’s been played on stage and resonating in the hearts of many an audience since 1971. This David Rubio, originally commissioned by Mike Caruso who has owned it all along, is a prime example of the special alchemy that occurs when a guitar is played in extensively: it is wide, wide awake. Excellent clarity and power across the range, with a crispness in the top end that projects very smoothly. Side dots are a visual creature comfort to aid in lefthand orienteering to boot! The body is classic Spruce over Brazilian Rosewood and weighs in under four pounds. 650mm scale and 52mm nut on a somewhat slender neck profile. This beauty has the marks of a professionally played and maintained instrument, and is in great working shape for its next owner.
