New Simpson Dream Series SJ Brazilian/German
We are delighted to have here the latest Dream Series from luthier Jason Simpson. Martin Simpson and I sort of ‘discovered’ Jason years ago and we’ve been delighted to bring his work to you our customers as it is shining example of modern luthiery. This SJ Dream Series is simply breathtaking, gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood, German Spruce, dual Side Soundports, elevated fingerboard, the most wonderful armrest bevel and elegant details throughout. Jason’s voice is clear and present reminiscent of Ryan but with perhaps more power in the mid range. We consider Jason’s guitars to be one of the most versatile, wonderfully adept at fingerstyle, flatpicking and strumming in many genres.

This is the first of Jason Simpson guitars with his new SJ body style and we just love it. It has a beautiful balance and elegant line. Jason’s sculpted armrest BEVEL is one of the most refined we’ve seen. We actually helped Jason test out his bevel during it’s design and it not only looks great but is extremely comfortable in any playing position. For this SJ we selected a premium set of old growth Brazilian Rosewood and topped it with AAA German Spruce. The look of this guitar is defined by the dark Ebony bindings, plain fingerboard, black nut and saddle with just the right of abalone accent on the top border and rosette. The voice is majestic, big bass, strong trebles and a sonority that is well-suited for fingerstyle, flatpicking or strumming. Versatility comes easy to this dazzling Simpson SJ. This instrument features:

Well the end has finally come for the amazing Dream Series guitars that Jason Simpson created for us. He continues to astound us with the tonal and visual beauty of his guitars. What we are most proud of hear is the powerful and moving voice that Jason achieves by pairing the African Mahogany (Sapele) with Carpathian Spruce on the GA sized body. The result is extreme versatility in a guitar that can easily move between style and genres. You can achieve big strummed sounds and the most delicate fingerpicked passages. Jason’s armrest bevel is extremely original and beautiful. On close inspection you’ll find laminated braces, bound soundhole and many other elegant touches that other builders don’t typically offer. This truly is a Dream Guitar…

Jason has far exceeded our hopes for our Dream Series with him. He created his gorgeous new armrest bevel for us and added detail after detail to these exceptional instruments. We chose Carpathian Spruce over top of stunning Sapele (African Mahogany), a combination that really works. The pictures and audio below can describe this guitar far better than my words so I invite you to read on. It’s a special one.

At long last, Eric Weigeshoff has finished our custom build for Yasmin Williams! This Skytop GC is what fine lutherie is all about: Teredo-hole Sitka Spruce, Spalted Tamarind back and sides, multiscale fretboard, twin soundports and Bloodwood appointments—James May Ultra Tonic pickup, Visesnut flight case, and more percussive fingerstyle fun than you can shake a pocketful of acrylic nails at. We’d say the only thing missing is a player to warm it up, but we’re sure Yasmin will keep this Skytop in hand and lap to make music for many years to come.

Eric Weigeshoff’s got some good mojo working: our latest Skytop Grand Concert is a sharp-dressed firebrand in Sitka and Mango. The woods alone make this GC shine (gorgeous Bearclaw figure across the top, vibrant Flame Mango back and sides), right down to the Koa 12th fret. But put finger to string, and the real fun begins!
Brand new, this Skytop has a very lively response with trebles that cut through the mix with aplomb. The bass and mids are crisp and crunchy with a clean projection sustained up and down the neck. Slick setup is easy on the hands, and this pretty sans-soundhole guitar keeps on singing when you drop it into altered tuning territory. Twin soundports on the side give you a glimpse into Eric’s bracing style, and the paired Ziricote bridge and fretboard set off the Bearclaw Sitka in a classic study of light and dark.
Already this explosive and it’s brand new? We shudder to think how this latest Skytop GC will blossom with the addition of a few hours’ play time.

When it rains, it pours. That’s exactly what happens as soon as you put finger to string on this brand new, soundproofed Grand Concert from Skytop Guitars: a torrent of colorful overtones and crisp attack. After our recent visit to the 2017 Woodstock Invitational Luthier Showcase, we came home with a number of new builders to showcase at our shop, but this one takes the cake for originality. Flamed Myrtle back and sides, almost 3,000-year-old Ancient Sitka Spruce top, Koa appointments, and two large bass-side soundports in lieu of a traditional soundhole.
In so doing, Eric was able to brace the top much more lightly without compromising its structural integrity (like putting a big hole in the middle might do). The result is a warm, round fundamental with a quick response! Great balance across the registers, and it doesn’t take an aggressive attack to get heaps of projection; even a light touch goes a long way.
This Skytop GC is not your granddaddy’s ole Martin; it’s a whole new breed of guitar.

This is one of Caleb Smith’s most recent builds from 2017, D-28 #58 in Brazilian Rosewood and 350-year-old Adirondack Spruce. Some of our all-time favorite luthiers are also full-tilt performing musicians, and there’s an obvious connection between the virtuosity of plucking notes and of shaping wood. This is a handsome 28-style Dreadnought with a quick V neck, 1 11/16” nut, and seriously ancient Adirondack Spruce on top for that extra ounce of awesome.
Now, the voice is something else entirely. This is not your average honkin’ Dread. This Caleb Smith has a smooth, expressive, and very musical tonality that renders notes in full technicolor glory. The trebles and middle register are particularly crisp and present; perfect for giving solos and lead work a bit more sizzle to stand out from the crowd. Gold EVO frets will ensure you won’t need a fret dress any time soon (even though you’ll be putting serious hours on this guitar in no time), and we guarantee that this guitar, as incredible as it sounds now, will continue to open up even more over time.
Caleb’s reputation is sterling, and we’re excited to be able to offer this 2017 beauty to all of you. Get it while it’s hot!Other keywords: dreadnaught, balsam range, flat picking, flatpicking, bluegrass, traditional guitar, herringbone, waverly, waverlies

It’s no secret that we are huge fans of Stefan Sobell‘s here at Dream Guitars, and this 2010 New World model is proof positive as to why. Dressed in African Blackwood and German Spruce this instrument is quite the charmer. Jumbo frets, signature top, and crowsfeet appointments this guitar flaunts classic Sobell vibes. The wenge neck however mixes up these classic appointments a bit. This New World is certainly worth some exploration.

Stefan Sobell’s Model 1 design is a fantastic example of a desert island guitar: it handles a wide range of musics, can be played hard or soft, and projects powerfully without being a full tilt jumbo guitar. This particular example from 2001 is proof of all that and more, here decked out with a three-piece Cocobolo back and German Spruce top, crows’ feet appointments, and a slinky low setup that’s effortless under your fingers. A Highlander IP-1 pickup will take you right up to the stage, and a Calton flight case will keep this Sobell safe and sound on those rare moments you aren’t playing it. Built in 2001, this Model 1 has had some good playing time under its belt and is oh. so. wide open.

Woah. This is a monster of a guitar; Stefan nailed it with this Model 1 from 1998. Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce with a 16 3/8” lower bout and domed back/top! Very energetic, with a quick and lively response. This Sobell is a fingerstyle force to be reckoned with, a natural choice for DADGAD or C9—but Standard holds its own just fine as well. This one has seen some action since its 1998 birthdate, and it’s got a supremely opened up voice to prove it. Our repair staff went over it tuner to tail and we’re happy to give it a clean bill of health. Ready for more!

Stefan Sobell, Darrell Scott. Two of our favorite names, and strung together in the same breath makes for a powerful instrument. Enter the “Lumberjack” Model 1, built by Stefan for Darrell in 2019. Silky, dark Malaysian Blackwood back and sides with a Sitka Spruce top, Stefan’s trademark V neck profile, and a 25 5/8” scale length for crisp bass notes and explosive projection. The top is a step in a new direction for Stefan, lighter and more responsive, and we’re delighted to confirm it soaks up gentler fingerstyle work just as well as vigorous flatpicking. Additionally, Stefan outfitted this beautiful instrument with a Highlander pickup, Gotoh 510 Delta tuners, EVO frets, and the whole package comes wrapped up in an ivory Hiscox flight case.

What better endorsement for a guitar than Martin Simpson’s own two hands? We’ve got a 2009 Sobell New World model formerly owned by the man himself, with some gorgeous dark African Blackwood back and sides and German Spruce on top. The fretboard features a slightly wider nut (1.78 inches) for easy fretting, and the setup is butter smooth and easy. A Highlander pickup for a gorgeous amplified tone, and then there’s a hardcore Calton flight case to keep the New World safe between home and stage.
The voice has opened up sweetly since 2009, with liquid trebles and a round, warm midrange response that’s a real pleasure to play around with in DADGAD and beyond. You can really even take this Sobell down to C# territory without the bass response waxing floppy. You’ve got enough projection to flatpick your way through a session without getting lost in the crowd, and when you’re playing solo compositions later on a delicate touch will still bring out a clear and dynamic tone.
Hands down, this Sobell New World is firing on all cylinders.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, stefan sober, fingerstyle, fingerpicking, maple

And now for something completely different. We’ve got an incredible Giant Cittern from the one and only Stefan Sobell, one of the original pioneers in modern Cittern and Bouzouki innovation for Irish and folk music. This fearsome piece was commissioned by Joseph Sobol in 1992, at the time one of only six that Stefan had ever built to these dimensions. Since then, this Cittern was also owned by Henry Kaiser for a time, and we’ve got it now! Decked out with Indian Rosewood back and sides and a European Spruce top and 12 strings—yep. You can rig this one a variety of ways; we’ve got it set up sort of as as 12-string guitar in CGCGCD, and it fills the entire room at first pluck! It also takes to DADGAD, guitar Standard—the sky’s the limit with our Sobell Giant Ciittern in your hands.

One of the guys here had to stop playing this guitar when his hands started shaking: the response of this Double Decker is siesmic. Stefan Sobell makes an incredible guitar these days, and it’s obvious from guitars like this big boy from 1993 that he’s had his master’s touch for an incredibly long time.
This is the sort of guitar which, when played, can reduce a player to monosyllabic sentences. It’s hard to say anything more complex than, “Woah,” after you’ve experienced the sheer complexity of this guitar’s voice. The Mahogany neck features Sobell’s flattened C profile (slim and slick) and meets the body at the 12th fret, increasing the warmth of the mids and moving the bridge further down from the soundhole in order to better active the German Spruce top. The Brazilian Rosewood back and sides feature dramatic, twisting grain patterns and are still stable and crack free after 25 years of music.
The setup threads the needle for both fingerstyle and flatpicking, especially if you like going into dropped tunings. Just strum an open chord, and you’ll be amazed at the sheer volume of this Double Decker. The velvet-rich bass response pairs with sweet, fat trebles—and even when you dig in with aggressive attack the voice remains articulate and defined.
The Double Decker is a force of nature, plain and simple.
