1998 Claxton EM Indian Rosewood/Sitka Spruce
This baby does it all. In essentially the same shape since its birth in 1998, this Claxton EM can take whatever tuning or genre you throw at it and make something beautiful out of it. The classic combination of Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce has rarely sounded so crisp, even, and projective–at Claxton’s SJ-size, this EM has a huge voice, but its lightweight construction makes for a guitar that’s easy on the shoulders to play for extended periods of time.
The string-to-string balance is yep, you guessed it, superb; the bass notes are rich but focused, paired sweetly with the trebles. When we flatpicked tunes, the EM roared, then with nails and fingertips we found the woody tones in the lower-middle register blossomed. After only a moment’s strum you can tell this EM has opened up deliciously since 1998.

2007 Claxton EM Brazilian/Italian
This 2007 EM from Ed Claxton tastes like the first time you bit into real New York cheesecake: rich as sin and silk-smooth. With Brazilian Rosewood and Italian Spruce, who’d be surprised? Each and every note intonates wonderfully across the fretboard, and the neck profile is gossamer and fast. If you crave a setup that’s buttery and easy, look no further. The bass response has an impressive fundamental, and notes tend to hang in the air for long seconds.
When we dropped this EM into DADGAD and CGCGAD, the voice remained crisp and focused. While you can put any guitar in C tunings, sure, but only one in a great many sounds just as clear and responds as well as though it were in standard. Honestly, we can’t find any fault with this Claxton–even the case rocks (it’s a Calton).

2011 Claxton EM Brazilian/German
This Claxton EM is a charmer! The Brazillian Rosewood is out of this world pretty and adds a richness and color to the voice that make it perfect for altered tunings and standard alike. The German Spruce top makes sure the lows rumble and the highs soar, it’s a joy to hear and play. It’s a breeze to play, a warm summer breeze that is. And that rosette, what a beautiful thing.

2007 Claxton Classical Flame Maple/European
This is a beautiful Ed Claxtn classical with lovely woods, comfortable dimensions, and a sound that is punchy and clear without sacrificing any sweetness. Ed is well known as one of the premier luthiers of our time and his instruments are very much in demand. The flame mahogany neck here compliments the very pretty maple sides and back, and the European Spruce top rounds out the tone and looks wonderfully.

2002 Ed Claxton EM Figured Mahogany/Adirondack
This is what mahogany is all about. Paired here with Adirondack it gives this guitar multiple gears. Played sweetly you get mahogany’s wonderful clarity and breath but push it a bit and up comes a powerful throaty growl. The Adirondack is perfect on top and adds sparkle and tons of headroom. 2006 Ed Claxton EM Grand Concert Brazilian/German Spruce
Ed Claxton is highly regarded as one of the finest luthiers today. He builds a guitar heralded for it’s clarity, balance and full, rich voice. Unless you play one it’s hard to believe just how gorgeous the tone is. This 2006 EM is in mint condition and crafted from stunning Brazilian Rosewood and Master Grade German Spruce. Here we have a totally custom Concert guitar from Ed Claxton. This very guitar is featured on page 471 of the book Guitars, by David Schiller. Ed has built a reputation by building instruments with sumptuous tone, impeccable build quality and the finest materials. This guitar is no exception, it features some of the finest Brazilian Rosewood you will find with stunning grain and rich tone. It is accentuated by an incredible Sinker Redwood top that gives it a unique combination of power and warmth, This is very rare Redwood salvaged after more than 100 years at the bottom of the Big River near Mendocini California . It is thought to have originally grown high up on the ridge in conditions that make it very stiff and strong. 1991 Brian Cohen 1936 Hauser Indian/European
This guitar is a meticulously crafted replica of Hermann Hauser’s famous 1936 instrument, by arguably the best maker in England today. Projecting a clear focused sound, if you are looking for a fast player with a HUGE variety of tonal colors, this is your guitar! Brian Cohen has been building guitars since 1972, and is widely regarded as one of the finest builders of classical guitars in the UK. This gem, made from East Indian Rosewood and European Spruce, is a wonderful example of his historically accurate Hauser-style. It is warm and open, with great string balance and powerful projection. The neck is very comfortable as well. A great guitar by one of Britain’s top builders.
