Straight-grained Wenge back and sides pair up with Alpine Moonspruce, their signature 12 fret design plus deep cutaway, and the gorgeous hollowed headstock design. Visually, the rosette is animated with a colorful array of hummingbirds African sunbirds, and Cape King Protea flowers.

2020 Casimi C2S, African Blackwood/Moonspruce
Matthew and Matthias of Casimi Guitars continue to raise the bar with each build that graces our shop. Look no further than this fabulous 2020 C2S, like new and ready for action! Night-dark African Blackwood back and sides with a creamy Moonspruce top, trademark 12 fret neck and open headstock, and the Casimi Signature appointment package to make these woods pop even more. Geometric designs bookend the raised rosette—which motif continues to the center of the back—and a subtle Ryan-style arm bevel plus soundport add to the creature comforts of this already smooth operator. Koa purflings throughout, and all wrapped up in a custom Hoffee flight case for maximum safety. The voice is characterized by a pianistic response and articulation; big chords ring out in full technicolor glory. The trebles mix a crisp fundamental with a warm overtone effect that’s mesmerizing, and they pair so sweetly with the articulate midrange and expressive bottom end.

2017 Casimi C2S, Pernambuco/Lucky Strike Redwood
Our latest Casimi is a sight to see, and a wonder to hear. This C2S was built in 2017 for a discerning client with dramatic Pernambuco back and sides and a, well, striking set of Lucky Strike Redwood on top. We find that the Pernambuco gives the voice an evenness and definition that would be a touch dry, but when paired with the Lucky Strike top the result is a smoothness and velvety texture that is pretty distinct from most of what we hear coming out of guitars these days.
The sides are inlaid with vines and Mayan glyphs which dovetail with the Mayan-inflected raised rosette (a Casimi hallmark) and endgraft. Red purflings along the Ebony bindings and arm bevel set off the Pernambuco and Redwood, and like all Casimis this C2S features a 12-fret neck join and deep Florentine Cutaway, their unique pinless bridge, and hollow headstock with Gotoh 510 tuners. 2019 Casimi C2S, Koa/Alpine Moonspruce
Pure magic beneath your fingers. This Casimi C2S is a dream machine of modern lutherie, the marriage of a distinct aesthetic with gossamer playability and thunderclap power. Built in 2019, this C2S is nearly new, boasts tightly flamed Hawaiian Koa sides (double sided with a Wenge veneer inside) and a pale Alpine Moonspruce top, and is adorned with Matthias and Matthew’s brass, copper, and Hawaiian black lipped pearl appointments. A work of art as much for the eye as the ear, to say nothing of the hand. 12 frets to the body with a 25.5” scale makes for power, clarity, and added warmth to really fill out the voice; this Casimi has an exquisitely articulate balance from string to string. A fingerstyle guitar in its own category.

2019 Caton HJ, Honduran Rosewood/Torrefied Adirondack Spruce
Kevin Caton fits a whole case of tone in a six-pack body—the petite HJ is a lively number with 14” lower bout, Honduran Rosewood body, and Torrefied Adirondack Spruce on top. The pre-aged Adi adds power and crunch to the voice, giving the bass response more kick than you’d expect. The build quality is top notch, and featherweight (under three pounds) with great neck-to-body balance for playing on either leg. This beauty comes to us from brand new from 2019, so it’s had a little extra time to open up on top of the Torrefied Adirondack.

2016 Charis SJ, Indian Rosewood/Sinker Redwood
A beautiful pairing: Larry Robinson’s inlay wizardry and Bill Wise’s guitarbuilding masterwork. This is a gorgeous SJ model from 2016, hands down. Indian Rosewood back and sides with Sinker Redwood on top come together for warmth and sweet overtones, and the setup is typical Charis—smooth and glassy. Larry’s inlays take the form of a series of birds and branches sprawling across the fretboard and headstock veneer, and Bill trimmed the body out with flamed Koa (really making the arm bevel pop!). Upper bout soundport to bring it all together. Our repair folks recently installed a K&K Pure Mini pickup too, so this one is stage ready to boot!

2014 Circa 000 Cutaway, Mahogany/German Spruce
A modern fingerstyle machine from the workshop of the one and only John Slobod of Circa Guitars. Ridiculously beautiful Mahogany graces the back and sides of this 2014 000, paired with a German Spruce top. You’ll notice a not-so-common cutaway on this one—the dramatic Florentine falls away much deeper than most, giving you even more comfortable access to the higher registers of the guitar. And thanks to John’s acoustic wizardry, it sacrifices nothing in tone or presence. A masterfully built instrument through and through.

2015 Circa 000 Cutaway, Panamanian Rosewood/Adirondack Spruce
Many luthiers attempt to combine tradition with modernity, very few succeed in this endeavor. However John Slobod delivers time after time– This 000 Cutaway from 2015 showcases this flawlessly. Here we have a 12-fret small body guitar with the look and feel of a classic fingerstyle guitar but the makeup of something more. Panamanian Rosewood with EVO Frets are not apart of your grandpa’s flattop. This guitar feels right at home with travis picking, flatpicking, you name it. On the other hand it leaves nothing desired for the more modern picker. This instrument does it all, it’s comfortable, dynamic and so enthralling. Hard to put it down.

2016 Circa 000-28, Brazilian Rosewood/Adirondack Spruce
John Slobod does it again. We’ve landed a smooth talker from 2016 that’s wide awake and crooning. This Circa 000-28 is upgraded with the crème de la crème of all tonewoods, gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood, and topped with Adirondack Spruce (sweetly opened up in the past five years for power and push). 12 fret neck (with slotted headstock) adds warmth and roundness to the trebles to match the responsive and present bottom end, plus the setup on this Circa is smooth to the touch and easy as breathing. Ivoroid bindings and tight herringbone trim, combined with a pyramid bridge, make the classic American guitar aesthetic proud.

Brand New Circa 00-28, Madagascar Rosewood/Adirondack Spruce
Are you ready for this? Take a seat before you pick this brand new beauty up, because it’s going to floor you otherwise. John Slobod of Circa Guitars offers up this dynamite 00-28 with his newest hybrid X bracing system, combining the best parts of vintage Martin and Gibson for an articulate, powerful, and compelling new sound. The voice is handsome, chock full of warmth and roundness from the small 00 body, with great note separation between the registers and lovely individual note definition. It plays like grass-fed butter and feels just as smooth. Dark, straight-grained Madagascar Rosewood back and sides are paired with Adirondack Spruce on top, all built with hide glue in the old world style, and outfitted with herringbone trim on top, zigzag backstrip on back, and Ivoroid bindings to tie it all together.

2009 Circa 000 Cutaway, Koa/Adirondack Spruce
We’re tempted to keep this one on as a shop guitar forever—this 2009 Circa 000 Cutaway is a petite force of nature. Gorgeous Koa back and sides paired up with Red Spruce on top and a cutaway + 12-fret neck. The responsiveness is dialed in for fingerpicking for sure, and it handles a pick well to boot; we love the whip crack clarity from string to string. Especially considering the 000’s dimensions, this Circa has a powerful bass response, and it teams up with strong middle and upper ranges for excellent power and projection.

2009 Circa Steve Baughman 7/8 Dreadnought Cocobolo/European
We’re not talking about your papa’s junkyard strummer. This 2009 Steve Baughman 7/8 Dreadnought from John Slobod is nothing short of mesmerizing, nothing more than flawless. You know how some guitars just grab you the second you pluck a string, how once in a long while an instrument just says, “Here we go!” and you’d better hold onto your pick before you lose it? That’s what sort of guitar we’re looking at here. Not to wax hyperbolic, but this 7/8 Circa Dreadnought sings unlike any angel you’ve heard.
The Cocobolo Rosewood and European Spruce, in John’s hands, come together for a voice that’s opened up in a way to invoke the envy of an old school Martin. From the bottom of the bass to the canopy of treble overtones, each note rings with the kind of clarity you could cut diamonds with. The 12-fret neck warms up the bass just enough to make it enveloping but not overwhelming, and makes the already easy play feel even more effortless. Altered tunings? Excellent choice. This Steve Baughman Dread was built with just such a fingerstylist in mind–drop it down to C and the clarity and articulation is still there, unadulterated. This Circa can go wherever you’d like, can murmer as subdued as you want or as energetically as you need. Smooth as goose feathers! If it sounds like we’re gushing, it’s because we are: this Circa has stolen all our hearts.

2008 Circa 00-28 Brazilian/Adirondack (Red)
We’ve had a slew of gorgeous Circa guitars through our shop, each a masterpiece of traditional form, and this 00-28 fits right in! From the perfectly-laid Herringbone trim and Abalone torch headstock, to the chocolate-dark Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce top, you’re looking at perfection in a 00 body.
Built in 2008, this 00-28 has had plenty of time to open up, but it’s still got that new guitar smell every time you crack open the case! We found the setup to be splendidly silky and low, and the thunderous growl we experienced tuned up to standard rang just as clearly in lowered tunings. The middle registers notes are vibrant and expressive, and pair sweetly with the bell-like trebles to round out the voice for a guitar optimized for fingerstyle arrangements. Plus, once you consider that this Circa comes with a B-Band pickup system with an A2.2 preamp, and a Calton flight case, you’re looking at an instrument ready to travel to the ends of the earth in safety for your next gig.
