2011 Blues Creek 000 12-Fret, Brazilian Rosewood/Adirondack Spruce
A John Hall special in the house: check out our 2011 Blues Creek 000 12-fret in Brazilian & Red Spruce. The top is decked out with a brown Martin-style burst and Ivoroid trim, and a pyramid bridge to bring it all together. The Brazilian’s got some pretty figure in the lower bout, and the slotted headstock with Grover tuners rounds out the image of an American 000 with the Abalone torch front and center.
For players seeking a beefy neck, this Blues Creek will feel right at home, and the 1 13/16” nut makes for easy fingerpicking playability. Naturally, we had a blast digging into bluesy numbers with this 000, but it also held up well under a pick for some fiddle tunes. There’s an impressive amount of projection under the hood for a 000. A powerhouse in all directions.

Julius Borges knows how to utilize every square inch. This 000 has an expansive voice that belies its petite proportions, with the perfect amount of balance and definition between the registers to make fingerstyle work absolutely sing. This gorgeous Borges is upgraded with arrow-striaght Madagascar Rosewood back and sides (looks strikingly like the best prewar BRW Martin stock) and Adirondack Spruce on top, fine herringbone trim, plus pyramid bridge for the classic flattop aesthetic. The setup is silky smooth and easy on the hands, with a 12-fret body join for extra warmth and a medium thick neck carve.

Threading the needle between an 0 and 00, this 0.5 12-fret manages to feel cozy and intimate in your arms at the same time that it belts out some serious projection and velvety mids. Brazilian Rosewood and Italian Spruce pair up for sweet trebles and a crisp bass response. String-to-string balance is dialed in with the fingerstylist in mind; we found country blues picking brought out more crunch in the mids, but with slow pieces the tone smoothed over as though it was a completely different guitar. In a word: dynamic.
Boswell’s lutherie career is firmly rooted in the repair tradition, and it’s quickly evident that this has honed his eye for fit and finish to a surgeon’s precision. The light, vintage pickguard matches the herringbone trim and Ebony belly bridge, and the lines of the slotted headstock are sharp and well-executed. Weighing in at a trim 3lb 13oz, this 0.5 may feel like a featherweight, but there’s some serious muscle at work under the hood. There’s a lot of great 0 and 00 guitars out there, but this 0.5 stands apart from the throng with its smooth response, playability, and elegant aesthetics.

This is the only all Koa Martin Simpson model we’ve ever see. This rare beauty features premium grade, highly figured Koa for the back, sides, top and headstock. This model was a collaboration between fingerstyle master Martin Simpson and luthier Dana Bourgeois. The idea was a fingerstyle 12 fret slope D that would provide power missing in many fingerstyle instruments and also work well for strumming and flatpicking. The addition of a fallaway cutaway that grants full access to the 15th fret and generous string spacing make it an oustanding fingerstyle guitar and one of those rare designs happy to flatpick as well and it hits the mark. This one in all Koa is rare and collectible to boot.

Add to CompareBrand New Galloup G.4, Brazilian Rosewood/German Spruce
We’re exceedingly fortunate to be able to work with some of the greatest luthiers alive today, among them Bryan Galloup. We just took in this brand new G.4 from Bryan after the 2019 Swannanoa Gathering Guitar Week, and frankly we feel hard pressed to let this one go. Brick-red Brazilian Rosewood back and sides are paired with a German Spruce top and 12-fret neck in a smaller package that lends extra sweetness to the trebles. This Galloup is an excellent fingestyle instrument, and plays as easily as breathing. The bass register is equal parts warmth and definition, which really rounds out the overall voice. Bryan stepped up his game by stepping the wings of the bridge (see photos for a closeup!) and inlaying the back with long geometric patterns, as well as around the soundhole. This work of functional art comes wrapped up in a custom Hoffee flight case.

The goods keep on coming! We originally spec’d out this Buendia 000 in 2018 with Brazilian Rosewood, Swiss Alpine Moonspruce, Brazilian bridge, Honduran Mahogany neck, 12-fret board and Florentine Cutaway. That’s only scratching the surface. Leo’s touch makes for incredibly dynamic and resonant guitars, and this one packs in incredible amount of clarity, depth, and power into an effortless-playing 000 package. Calling it impressive would be an understatement. Excellent note separation, and buttery riches from string to string. Fingerstyle heaven, much?

If Paul Heumiller commissions a build for himself, you know the luthier has some serious chops. This Buendia Jumbo is proof of Leo’s talent. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, french polished Adirondack Spruce top (from Randy Lucas himself), green-dyed Maple Burl rosette–this is just the start. The neck is carved from Indian Rosewood, and has a 12-fret neck join to marry warmth to Leo’s Jumbo body. Of course Paul also requested a multiscale fretboard (26.25″ to 25.5″) and a Florentine Cutaway to keep all those slant frets accessible. The bass response is expansive, but crisply defined. That clarity pairs well with a smooth upper register, and an articulate midrange for fingerstyle heaven.
Leo Buendia’s guitars are inspiration carved from wood and steel. Of instruments of this calibre, there are but a few. This one has come up for sale, and we can’t recommend it highly enough!
